Alpha Protocol, like most of Obsidian's games, was a game that tried to do a lot of really cool things on the story and plot side but ran out of time in development to get the polish right. They tried to do so many things with that game that they didn't get anything perfect. (See also KOTOR2, especially the last 10% or so.)

They came pretty close with the way the story unfolded in AP, though, and the way interaction with characters had the potential to affect the way the game played out so dramatically. In a world of sane game ratings, it'd have been a 6 or a 7 out of 10. Probably about 3 stars. It certainly wasn't perfect, but it definitely got worse treatment than it deserved.

@Teletheus: Wat.

They had less than a year to make KotOR2. Give them a reasonable dev time and an already great game would've only been better.

Whatever, I thought Alpha Protocol kicked ass, despite all it's flaws. I'm pissed they aren't going to make a sequel and try to iron that shit out.

@MakeThemListen I concur. I really, really liked the conversation/morality system--it wasn't select the good guy thing or bad guy thing so people love or hate you, it was select whatever you think you will benefit from most and face the consequences later. I also liked that there was a set time on how long it took you to respond because that helped keep the game flowing. I much prefer the "stance" selection than the snippet you get in Mass Effect (I am NOT hating on Mass Effect... love those games) because you pretty much ALWAYS know what your character is going to say or how he's going to act. So many times in Mass Effect I've picked something because I was like, "Oh, that sounds like a good choice," but the character's tone and what I inferred from the choice provided were quite different from one another.

@MakeThemListen Hey, I'm not knocking it; I loved it too. Like I said, it got worse treatment than it deserved. It wasn't perfect -- there were certainly some flaws in the gameplay -- but it was definitely worth playing, especially for those who care primarily about good story (and who like the spy genre).

I have seen Obsidian get some flack over the RPG sequels they have made. A number of there games have a love hate view toward them. Depending on the rpg series I think sequels can be a good thing for them. I would like to see Obsidian go back to their roots and create something inventive. Planescape: Torment shook the rpg grounding that I had my feet planted on. It had such a different feel, a different vibe to it. I would really like to see them present a fresh IP to the gaming community that shows what they can do.

The guys at Obsidian are okay, but a lot of their stuff simply lacks the zing of the original…consistently. First KOTOR 2…it was a weaker game than KOTOR in many of the key aspects of the game. Then Fallout 3 New Vegas…bonk…it was basically a very large expansion. Sorry, but in 2 years, I would have expect far more polish and improvements to the original game. I’m probably one of the few people who actually liked Alpha Protocol, as they did a lot of cool stuff with the game, but it REALLY lacked polish, and they seemed to use the most basic very of unreal with ZERO improvements. Overall They don’t deliver crap, they just don’t deliver really memorable titles either.

@hiruuamon I'm really kinda sick of the argument that New Vegas was essentially an expansion. With that mindset, all sequels are freaking expansions. "Gears of War 3 is coming out... but it's pretty much just an expansion. You kill locusts and use your chainsaw and stuff, but it features new environments, weapons, and story... kinda like a whole new game, but not because it's just so dern much like its predecessor"

@hiruuamon Actually, KOTOR2 was stronger than KOTOR in a lot of ways -- especially the writing. Kreia is still probably the most well-written character in videogames. Ever.

@masterbedgood

Perhaps "a big expansion" is too strong a description of the game, since I had a lot of fun playing it, and exploring the Strip, but the game didn't grip me as Fallout 3 did, and honestly, the technical glitches were a bit much for a game built on an established engine.

I really hope that they get an Icewind Dale 3 made, I'd like to see more games in the Forgotten Realms. I know Atari already has the new Neverwinter in the pipeline for later this year, seems like ID3 would be a great way to expand on the franchise.

Seriously i wonder how obsidian keep their door open sometimes. Each game they ever make is based on another studio work and they still manage to mess up(Even though they responsible for fallout franchise they still mess up the sequel). They even had the opportunity to make their own game instead of spend hours polishing the game before release they left how it (alpha protocol was finish 6 to 8 months before release)is an average rpg with a lot of potential . I'm hoping dungeon siege 3 will be their salvation but i won't hold my breath.

Except they didn't "mess it up". In fact their title is MUCH higher regarded under older Fallout fans than Fallout 3. The same counts for their other titles in one way or another.

Furthermore none of their titles are "average" (Well maybe NWN2 OC somewhat") They have their excellent parts and their bad parts. And they are generally much better written than 99% of the game industry.

Obsidian doing an Ultima? Holy shit, my pants are currently in another galaxy right now. If there is a God, this will happen. Please!

I really gotta wonder whats up with all the kids diggin' at Obsidian, gotta think they never played an RPG prior to the 360 or something.

Planescape motherlovin' Torment. Play it.

I'd also to say every single one of Obsidian's additions to an existing series I enjoyed more than the original. If there's one company that always nails the style and atmosphere of any particular fictional universe, it is them. Tack on excellent writing unmatched by any other company and a great creative drive and you always have these engaging and immersive games. Bugs be damned.

@2late2die - I've just put in a big order for tear-away pants. Now when this happens, the pants will just tear right off, at which point I can button them back up for reuse.

....That is how tear-away pants work, right?

(Not that I need new pants after this story. Not after all the bugs in NV.)

I guess we can agree to disagree...technically, there was a lot of improvements from kotor to kotor 2, but overall, I preferred the first game.

What a great article, great job mike! I love reading articles like these than just boring news. I have a kinda love hate relationship with obsidian and don't know how I feel about them as a studio. I think they make great stories but their game play and bugs leaves their games lacking in so many ways that its hard for me to really say i support them as a studio. Now with so many great rpgs coming out this year and next they are going to have a lot of competition I hope they can measure up.

I don't know why people have a problem with Obsidium making sequals. Sometimes its nice to have a different developer's take on an IP. Both Fallout: New Vegas and KotOR 2 were awesome games that felt different from the game that came before it in the series, but I don't think they were any worse than the previous game, just different.

I'm just going to use the rest of this post to rave a bit about KotOR 2 since I've been bumming around the SWTOR forums and seen so many people hating on it, and blaming Obsidium basically for not being BioWare. I believe the game was just as relevant as KotOR 1, even if it didn't feel as "grand" as the first game, you weren't really going out to save the galaxy (well you were, but it was much quieter as there wasn't a war going on) but I believe the game was still awesome on its own, because it just felt so different from the first. I also think they may have had better characters then the first game, Kreia was an awesome villain, Atton had a pretty cool secret he was trying to hide, etc.

I just think people need to take a step back and enjoy sequels not created by the IP's creator on their own merit, because they generally are still pretty fun games, and Obsidium is one of my favorite developers for that.

"Obsidian Entertainment has no shortage of street cred"

Ummmmm.....infamy isn't exactly cred, as cred in particular tends to mean "respect" not "insult to the fans". Wanna piss on your sequel? Have Obsidian "develop" it!

Except they have never once disrespected their fans. Every game they have made shows they respect their audience's intelligence a great deal more so than the original developers.

Yeah, I'll be excited for original Obsidian IP about the same time as they announce Bioware is polishing the game for them. There is undoubtedly some enjoyable writing in Obsidian games but they deliver what can charitably called a 'mess' on too many other fronts, and unfortunately you get this slavish, wide-eyed devotion from a certain group of people who like to excuse their shoddy work. Demand more from Obsidian and we might get more acceptable releases.
