Vagrant Story re-told on PlayStation Network tomorrow
70
Xenogears last week ... Vagrant Story tomorrow ... and Parasite Eve soon. It seems the gears are finally in motion to bring all of Square's beloved "PSone Classics" to the PlayStation Network. (Still, North America has a long way to go before reaching Japan's lofty 600-game benchmark.)
Vagrant Story will be available for $6 on the PlayStation Store once the PSN Tuesday update goes live tomorrow.

I'm surprised this is only selling for $6... I figured it'd go for the standard $10. Not that I'm complaining. This is a must buy for me! Sold my original copy.. such a stupid kid I was.

@LordHaart My copy of Vagrant Story has 2 CDs. You must be in the PAL region, where it came on one disc.

@greatslack The game itself is only one disc. The second disc in the US was one of the many demo / video discs Squaresoft packed with their games those days.

@LordHaart Final Fantasy Tactics was $10, and it was only one disc, no?
Also, charging more because it's a multi-disc game is such a spurious reason to charge an extra $3 on a digital download.

I grabbed this out of my roommate's stack o' games the other day and booted it up to see what it was all about, and I gotta be honest, I didn't get it at all. I'm intrigued by it, but the battle system is really confusing and unintuitive (VATS but with less waiting?) and I didn't get the story at all.
Any fellow 'Stiqers want to try to explain why this is a good game/what I am missing? I think I'll try to play it again later tonight.

During my RPG phase, I just loved it because it was something a bit different from the rest. I loved the atmosphere the game has, I loved the combat... It's really hard to pinpoint exactly what makes this game amazing, but it's just a magical game that is worth a play or three.
If you play it and let yourself enjoy it, I think there's alot that this game can give you.
Isn't it funny how I said so much, yet nothing at all.

@Colin i disagree, i think its the others way around. I (in the extreme minority, i know) thought VATS was terrible. VS has a completely different atmosphere/story than other rpg's and the graphics are pretty amazing for a playstation game. its a very challenging game that you cant really grind through, as each wepaon gains/loses effectiveness depending on what type of enemy you use it against, Lots of spells and break arts to learn,You can combine weapons parts to make new ones.

Give it another chance. I agree that i was disappointed with VATS for it NOT being what the system in VS is.
In FO3, every combat ends so quickly that you do not see what shooting in different parts do, while in VS you have to choose carefully depending on the enemy.
Also, you can specialise every weapon to different kinds of enemies. Say, spears for undead, axes for dragons. So you must think ahead at how to customize your arsenal.
Also, the map is like Metroid or recent Castlevanias, where it itself is a giant puzzle, requiring you to revisit places with newly aquired abilities/keys.
I highly reccomend, it's a high-profile game of past generations, Just like Super Metroid or Ocarina of Time.

Yeah, I agree, it did age pretty poorly. But my roommate has this, Xenogears and a mess of other PSX classics on the original discs, and I have my N64 and a ton of games. So we swapped and started plowing our way through all of the classics. I don't remember the last time I played a game from 2002 onward.
@Everyone else
Thanks guys. I'll give it another chance when I get back from classes tonight. The weapon customization and Metroidvania aspects sound pretty cool. I still don't understand how to do combos or whatever the system is, but I'm sure it will come. I think I'll try just using the disc and an emulater instead of the PSX hooked up to our tv though, that could improve the awkward graphics. Thanks for the help, friends.

I would explain but its been so long...I want to say that when you attack parts of an enemy, that part gains more resistance to your blows and you have to attack in varied ways....or weak against certain weapons...or something....sorry my explanation is terrible this time :(.
All the more reason to buy this one again and re-learn what was forgotten. I do remember really liking the weapon customization so there's that.

@Barry Burton "Also, you can specialise every weapon to different kinds of enemies. Say, spears for undead, axes for dragons. So you must think ahead at how to customize your arsenal." That's the part that killed me. All the sudden I was in dungeons with lizard men (I think), and no weapons that I liked did any damage to them. Oh well, as I had a copy from Usenet, I'm sure I'll buy it and try again, if anything to atone from my mod-cart ways.. :)

Also, my bad. I didn't mean VATS was better (far from it, I hate that combat system), I was just referring to the fact that it seems like I have to mash circle to hope that the menu opens up before they hit me, instead of waiting for a clear indication of when and if I have the resources to attack, a la action points. I guess I was wondering if there's any way to line up multiple attacks or whatever.
Anyhow, I gave it another shot and I'm enjoying it more so far. We'll see if it sticks. Thanks again, guys!

Definitely going to buy it. I wish the PS3 did a bit more with these games, more like an emulator. They really could be sharpened up while still smoothing out some of the textures. The features the PS3 has for this kind of stink.

if possible use an emulator for this game. it makes the graphics look incredibly sharp, and the ability to save states in this game helps tremendously. This game is Square Enix at its prime.

@bshido
It was Square at thier prime. Enix was not involved in the least.
VS is possibly the best game to come out of Square, and it saddens me how many people are trying to claim the game "didn't age well compared to modern releases." Yeah, if you compare to how stupidly easy FF13 is, you're right. This game required actual thought and skill.
As for the graphics, I'm kinda surprised. This looks worse than if you played the PS1 disc on a PS2. (I just did this last year) The PS2 emulation allowed for really good texture smoothing and AA to make the game look almost as good as the PC emulators.

Wow. Really? But what about the internet? What will happen from the sudden void of posts what would normally be disappointment that Vagrant Story was not part of yet another batch of PSN updates?
Oh well. I'll always have you to complain about, Suikoden II.

I don't know if I'm crazy enough to play through this game again. When I played it on the PS1 I collected every weapon, had full dread armor, and an oval damscus shield.
For those of you that have never played it, that means I wasted a lot of my life.
If SE made a sequel though, I'd do it all over again!

@gangcar I gave up at a particuarly grindy bit of the game. I do still have a copy of the Prima Guide for it. I may pick this game up and give it a second go.

@gangcar i didnt do any of that, but it took a long time to beat that game. I could only do 1 to 2 damage per hit to the final boss because my weapons werent preapred for that crap. Took FOREVER. I used an emulator with no frame limiter and it still took about hour and a half .
