After taking a trip back through the development of his first game, Populous, at GDC today, Lionhead's Peter Molyneux revealed that he's actually still working on the game. Programmed by Molyneux in his spare time, "FeedMe" is a 256-player version of the original Commodore Amiga title -- and the audience for his presentation got a rare look at it.
Showing if off wasn't easy. Molyneux had to compile the Visual C++ code, encountered a fatal error and sucessfully debugged it. The result: a very basic, high-res Populous world map with almost no user interface. In the course of watching this, we realized that the famed designer has only one game in the taskbar on his computer: Minecraft -- which, when you think about it, does draw inspiration from Molyneux's world-manipulation-based classic.

Molyneux plays Minecraft. Notch promised someone he'd add dogs to Minecraft. Hell, it's basically confirmed that it was Molyneux that Notch promised it to, it if wasn't obvious already. Personally, I can't wait until I get an AI partner with horrible pathfinding that I need to babysit.

Well at least with a dog you can tackle poor tracking in one of two ways.
1) it can just teleport to you when you leave its range or its AI determines it can not get to you.
2) dog whistle, just summons your dog to you from wherever it is.
So the horrible pathing is only somewhat horrible tho decent pathing would be really really nice. Dogs would be cool tho.

The Molyneux created the populus, The Notch played the populus and then the Notch created the craft, and the Molyneux played the craft -- and that, Simba, is the great circle of life.

I've always wanted a Minecraft mod that gives me a top down camera and lets me edit the terrain ala Populous while little Minecraft people live on the surface below me
I guess I wasn't the only one thinking this!

I never played populous but this FeedMe game sounds cool. I like anything multiplayer so I'd try it.

Having been in the session, I'm going to go ahead and add some detail that is sort of important and was not completely clear in the article.
Before Molyneux showed the demo, he joked about being sued by EA, then made it abundantly clear that this was a personal project. He didn't offer anything more at that point. After Taylor Wright (from POGO/EA) asked him to show it during the Q&A, Molyneux confirmed in a conversation with "legal" in the audience that it was okay to show because it was NOT PR and it was his "personal hobby project" and not a real product.
So no one should get their hopes up.

Which kind of sucks. Ok he couldn't call it Populus because that's a Bullfrog title and EA own the rights but holy hell 256 player "god game" is going to be popular.
Now perhaps he could also do a pet project that's erm... welll muliplayer Syndicate in nature but not called Syndicate for obvious reasons.
