Street Fighter 2 turns 20
42
Before the Super Turbo Hyper BBQ HD Ultra Mega Remixes there was just plain ol' Street Fighter 2, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this month. Capcom posted a birthday reminder for its classic fighter, which was born two decades ago in the arcades (remember those?).
Since 1991, Street Fighter 2 has seen six arcade iterations and near countless ports across consoles, PCs and handhelds (Tiger even!). Chances are you've played the game a time or two ... and had your pixelated butt unceremoniously handed to you.

@commonperson I had SF1 on my PC and it was TERRIBLE! I can't believe they were allowed to make a sequel, and that the sequel became such a classic. What was going on there Capcom??

@WonderCaliban I remember my first game too. I saw it in EGM before I played the game and noticed the guy that had really long limbs(Dhalsim). I finally saw the game in a convenient store and thinking that Dhalsim would have an advantage because of his range, that's who I picked and played my friend. I can't remember if I won, though.

This makes me feel damn old... but glad I got to play this game in the arcades at domestic release. In fact, I think it was the first game I eagerly sat down quarters on the screen glass for 'next game'. *coughs old gamer dust*
Between that (and MORTAL KOMBAT shortly after), it was definitely a new age in the arcades beyond your typical shooting gallery or "adventure-ish" points battle.

I remember the first time I played this and getting destroyed in the first round, and given the always-humiliating 'mercy' round. After the guy got a perfect on me in round three, he politely told me I have to learn how to block. I sheepishly walked away.
Despite my embarassment, I remember loving this game to pieces.

This makes me feel old. But in a good way; remember playing this in my lunch hour at school; running down to the arcades by the funfair and putting all our spare change into the only SF2 and then everyone choosing Ken or Ryu and Hadokens all over the place. Good times.

Love the SFII, so many quarters spent!
I made this remix of all SFII music and effects for the HD remix last year, I figure I'd share it with the 'stiqers now:

I have that Tiger Electronics Street Fighter II mentioned and linked to in this article, and it still works. I wish my Tiger version of Battletoads was so lucky...

One of my all-time favorite games. I still play some version of it on a regular basis. Whether it's on XBLA or my portable.

@Shadow Hog SF2 was just so much more iconic. Sure SF1 came first, but it's gameplay just wasn't good enough to separate it from the Karate Champs and Yie Ar Kung Fu's of it's time. SF2 completely redefined the genre and launched countless imitators and franchises. Without SF2 we wouldn't have Mortal Kombat, World Heroes, King of Fighters, Fatal Fury, Soul Caliber, Tekken, Virtual Fighter, Smash Bros., Dead or Alive, etc.

I still remember the looooooooooooooong lines in the arcade when this came out. Good lord...I also remember how, before the 6 button layout, it was a 3 big-rubble button layout with no joystiq.

Just a kid. Riding my bike two miles to meet a friend at the local minute market. Spending the fifty cents allowance I'd earned the week prior at the only SF2 cabinet within 20 miles. My Ken getting smashed by his Blanka nine times out of ten. How did this happen!? He was button mashing and I had the guide book! Oh well, I'd have it figured out by the next week...
Thanks for the memories Street Fighter 2.
