Sad to see Jack Wall leave the Mass Effect series. The first two OSTs were fantastic, to say the least. I'm sure Clint Mansell will be amazing, but i'll be sure to listen to "Ilos" and "Suicide Mission" a few times in remembrance.

Let's hope Clint uses the main theme in some form as ME1 was my best ME soundtrack. Heck, Afterlife's lounge music fits soo well in the set.

Aw, I was hoping Jack Wall could at least compose some of the songs. Clint Mansell's excellent, but let's hope we still have that same feeling from the first two games.

I'm probably not 'musically observant' enough to notice if the music in ME2 blended better than it did in the original, but I definitely thought the soundtrack was much more memorable in the first game.

@Jack Spicer I completely disagree. The first Mass Effect soundtrack is good but the second one blows it away. I actually put several songs from Mass Effect 2 on my iPod and listen to them regularly, which I haven't done with any of the songs from Mass Effect 1.

As far as Mansell, I loved the Moon soundtrack so I'm looking forward to hearing what he comes up with.

There is definitely some piece on ME 1 that aren't surpassed on ME 2, but ME 2 does blend better

Yeah, I liked the first game soundtrack because it sounded like something Vangelis would have made. Most of the music in the ME series sounds like typical 80s sci fi music though. Bunch of fast synths and strings/pads repeated over and over for 3 hours.

@Jack Spicer I agree with you. The first game's soundtrack is the best part of the game. As far as I'm concerned this Jack Wall is the best in the business. I dont care what the new guys resume is he simply wont be as good. Video Games =\= Movies

@Jack Spicer i will agree that the music was much more memorable in the first mass effect. mass effect 2 did, however, have great music as well. mansell is definitely capable of making some moody music (requiem for a dream, and pi) but i really liked the blade runnery feel to the first game. reminded me more of the music of older fsol than mansell. lets hope...

Clint Mansell has some amazing shoes to fill.
Its good to know it was his decision to move on, as I thought. Would hate the thought he was just replaced. Cant say I am not disappointed though, I loved his work on Mass Effect, they painted a brilliant picture together and I can vividly play scenes out in my head when listening to the soundtrack, and vice-versa.

Looking at his past work, I think he'll fit the shoes just fine, provided he has no ego and wants to keep things consistent. :)

Seems its a trend among RPG developers to ditch the composers that made them big. First everyone ditched the lot for Jeremy Soule, now its movie composers.

Bring back Mark Morgan!

Jack Wall made INCREDIBLE music for both Mass Effect 1 and Mass Effect 2.

He has great diversity too, as the two soundtracks were so different you might think they were different composers entirely, but a few tracks have the same trademark theme.

Music in the Mass Effect series definitely needs a shake-up.

I'm sure there are plenty of people that appreciated his style in the first two, but it's the weakest part of the game, to be honest.

I'm really looking forward to some more instrumental, epic music than had been in the previous two.

I do like "Virmire Ride", and the club music in ME2 but the rest is really forgettable.

@Wiizer I have to agree - how people claimed the music in the Mass Effect games were worthy of multiple "Soundtrack of the year" awards from various sites is mind-boggling. The musics not bad, and it suits the atmosphere well but it's not particularly memorable or interesting from a musical perspective.

I'd like to have seen Wall try and achieve what he did with Jade Empire; as you stated a more instrumental, epic score. Mass Effect isn't exactly an intellectual, clever game - it's a popcorn shooter, a blockbuster action movie [sometimes literally] so make the music meet the drama you're trying to convey.

@Wiizer So the best thing to make it less forgettable is to replace the futuristic synths and techno stuff and make it more instrumental and orchestral like every single movie and game ever?

@Wiizer I agree... some of the futuristic beeping low-key techno that was used for ambiance got real old, real fast.

Mass Effect is such a cinematic and intense game, I think it deserves some similarly cinematic and intense music.

Well, I was thinking more along the lines of Mozart or Beethoven as far as being more memorable...

But, I'll settle for something, anything more appealing than the synth crap. It's almost as bad as auto-tune is for the music industry.

@Wiizer Synths are bad for the music industry? Are you 70 years old? Is all Techno/Trance/House music bad? How would you feel if Daft Punk did the soundtrack for ME3? Autotune lets people who are bad at singing sound sorta less bad, synths and related technologies are something completely different, you might as well write off all music that contains the bassoon or something equally ridiculous.
@Penis How do you know I'm not from the future? But really, what seems more in line with a technology filled future with sentient computer programs, spaceships and lasers? Beethoven and Mozart string quartets? Or synths and computer beep stuff?

Well, regardless of who's composing, I hope they make a return to the style of music they used for the first game. I *adored* score of the first Mass Effect, not so much the second. Not that it was bad, I just feel that the first game had the far more memorable and fitting soundtrack... and story, and atmosphere...

Bioware, keep the gameplay improvements, but bring back the charm the original had please.

No offense Jack, but the ME2 soundtrack was fairly banal with no memorable themes (the best music in the game was borrowed from "Two Steps From Hell" for the trailer).

Now Clint Mansell, on the other hand ... 2 of the best movie soundtracks in existence (Requiem for a Dream, The Fountain), tons of quality work ...

Don't let the front-door hit you on the back-side, Jack!

Heart of Courage wasn't even in the game, was it? Just the trailer, likely done by an outside studio that had nothing to do with Wall.

And ditto on The Fountain.

Sucks to see Wall leave, as he did a good job, but I think it will be worth it to get Clint Mansell in there, who is absolutely phenomenal.

Everyone knows him for Requiem for a Dream, but The Fountain may have the best soundtrack I've ever heard. Combine his score for that movie with what's happening on screen and it's like he's reaching into your chest and pulling out your heart.

His work was even phenomenal in lesser known movies like Moon, and even in shoot 'em ups like Smokin' Aces and Faster. I was actually watching Faster the other day just for the heck of it and was wondering "how in the world does this generic shoot 'em up have amazing music that actually makes you care about these cardboard characters?" Sure enough, I looked it up on IMDB and it was Clint Mansell.

It really helps to know that it seems more his decision. He'll be missed but better for him to move on if he's had his fill of ME. I kinda understand his position, a few years on a job and I'm ready for a change.

Why would anyone be happy that he quit before finishing the trilogy?

He may have been bored, but I don't think composing the possible end of a series he had poured years into would've been tedious...

I think for his ego's sake, he's just saying this.

I never said I was happy, more like coming to terms with it. I assumed it was BW that let him go which would be worse than leaving on his own terms.

I don't disagree that he would have done a fine job on ME3, but in all likelihood it would have been the weakest score in the series since by his admission he's focusing on other projects Better to bring in new blood than settle for lesser work, that's my $.02.

Dissapointed with this. ME2s soundtrack may have been a massive step down from the first, but that had nothing to do with the quality. Thats what happens when the game is a mess of disjointed shooter missions and disposable characters. The best he could do was fill it with character themes that in terms of quality were no worse than the first game. It was just..... forgettable. But that was ME2 really. Being forgettable to try and get mainstream sales.

Hopefully this Mansell guy respects the originals intentions and makes the soundtrack accordingly. I have to say, Im not convinced so far. He did after all make the most overrated, overused piece of shit song in history from that requiem for a dream.

I mean every shit head fan movie maker and his/her dog had to put that song up, and the amount of times Ive heard the piece of crap on tv?

In the end I just hope its worth it. I hope both the game itself and the new composer turn around the downward trend the music took after ME1.

I liked Wall's stuff...it had a crazy Blade Runner-esquel, late 70's/early 80's sci-fi movie thing going on. Lots of discordant synthesized phrases...it was cool.

However, Clint Mansell is awesome. I couldn't believe the news when I heard he was scoring ME3. Honestly, since the dawn of custom soundtracks, I've always played tracks from his Pi soundtrack during action-heavy games, particularly "2 Pi r^."

And of course, I recall "Lux Aeterna" figuring prominently as I stalked the streets of LIberty City on the original Xbox.

His Black Swan score is currently juxtaposed to brilliant effect over games of Vanquish and Dead Nation. It's like slaughtering your way out of Tchaikovsky's fever dreams.

So...yeah. I'm stoked to see what he bangs out when composing specifically for a video game.

I can't really remember any songs from the second game, whereas I can readily hum a bunch of tracks from ME1. The songs in the first game were atmospheric and memorable, a big part of why I think the mood in the first instalment was much better than in the sequel (not to say the sequel isn't the better game).
