I would love to buy this, I used to play MK2 for HOURS, but I know I would lose interest about my 3rd time getting destroyed by a 10 yr old.

@(Unverified) I don't think many 10-year-old know what "Mortal Kombat" is. The first game came out in 1992.

Do ya feel old already? Wait until you hear this then:
People BORN that year are old enough to vote.

I went into SS4 with the intent on becoming actually "good" at the game.

After a month of cursing I could say that I knew how to abuse Sagat online and my wife made me stop playing because of said cursing.

I'm 30 yrs old and I hope to have the same experience with MK4 :) Screw the kids. I'll whoop 'em with whoever ends up being overpowered. Mwahahahah.

This game looks amazing. I used to have blind fanboy like devotion to Street Fighter when I was younger so I kept away from the MK franchise, but this game looks amazing...(Street Fighter 4 is still better IMO)

@FrodoTBaggins Honestly I'd have to say there isn't a group that actively hates fighting games more than the hardcore Street Fighter crowd.

It's cool if you're a fan of SF4 and all, but saying it's better than a game that isn't even out yet is...odd.

Sorry should've chucked in a ":P" at the end. It was a throwback tongue-in-cheek comment from my fanboy-ish youth. I wasn't actually saying SF4 is better then this (like you said I haven't played it), I was just having a laugh.

You know, Capcom REALLY needs to look at what Midway has been doing for Single Player for a while now. After MK vs DC, the "story clips" in SFIV were painful and MvC3 shows Capcom still doesn't give an f. Seeing this article makes me glad Midway didn't look at what Capcom and SNK has been getting away with and calling it in.

"We'll just check Youtube about an hour after the game comes out to learn what it is."

Why not just watch the inevitable youtube gameplay and fatality videos and not even play the game at all? Sheesh. Discovery of secret and hidden stuff was half the fun of playing MK. This new game more than any has made me realize how different things are now days when you can just hop online and print out a sheet containing every known thing about a game. Or in the case of the new MK, having how to do all the fatalities and moves available to you right there, in the game itself. I remember back in the day, half of the fun of MK was going to the arcade and watching others who figured out the fatalities and moves, chatting with them, hoping they would share the info with you so you could pass it on. Viral Face-to-Face, if you will. I cannot wait for this game, I haven't been this excited for a new release in a long time. But man, is it making me feel old...

How many people did you know with the internet in '92 - 93? I never even seen the internet in person until the late 90's. You are telling me they had those tip sheets printed in the mags on day one, just as the game was released to the arcades? And I could walk into a magazine store just as soon as one of the many revision chips, that changed the moves/fatalites/ect to the early MK games was put into place and find all this 'hidden knowledge'? As I remember it, they might have had a few incomplete guides in the gaming mags a month or two after the games hit the arcades. I also remember Midway being a little secretive about not giving away how to perform the secrets in the MK games, and leaving it up to the public to figure most of it out. Man, I wish I had the resources you had back in 92' - 93'. Then I wouldn't have had to waste so much of my youth enjoying the social aspects of chatting with other MK fans in the arcades.

If you had a brother/sister in college, you had the internet back then. If you attended a school in 92, you had the internet. If you bought a magazine and poped in one of the 3.5" floppies, you had the internet. And if you typed in "mortal kombat" in that search bar, you found a bunch of "theoretical" sheets. Most of those were tried and tested. These were often printed out and brought to the arcades. Like the Nintendo Power corners and it's Konami Code, most of those "masters" you learned from simply already memorized from those sources. So these sheets you claim didn't exist back then really did.

What THIS does is something simple and something most fighting games fans haven't quit figured out yet while also insisting they don't share their passion. This let's people know how to do this cool stuff. Who knows, MAYBE if fighting game fans weren't so hostile to outsiders, the genre wouldn't be under the threat of dying again.

Holy shit was he really that offensive? First you respond to claims he never made (complete day-one guides in monthly magazines) and then you imply that he's some kind of anti-social douchebag. Chill out, homie.

Okay, was a tad strong but let's put it this way...

On one hand, we whine and yell and complain because games are designed solely to sell strategy guides.

Then we whine and yell and complain because games aren't trying to sell us strategy guides and more importantly, they're specifically designing modes to allow everyone to enjoy the game instead of a select few who dabble online or in arcades, gets destroyed, then openly mocked for not having a 20 year history with a franchise.

We, as gamers, can't have it both ways and fighting games need to be more approachable. That doesn't mean easier or less complex but comparing our history with the genre with new players, there is a gulf. A very large gulf. Capcom isn't doing anything to help bridge it, Aksys tried, Netherrealms should be applauded for taking these steps. Not condemned.

Internet in schools in the 90's? Siblings running off to college? Magazines with packaged in discs??? Man, city life back then sure sounds like a wonderland. Makes us country folk seem like ignorant pissants.

Seriously though, I agree with what you are saying about fighting games and strategy guides and all that 100%. The moves and tricks used to play the game, everyone should have access to that to even the playing field, no doubt about that. What set MK apart in the genre, however, was the secrets that were unnessasary to the actual gameplay, like fatalities and all that extra stuff. Things that were fun to figure out / research on your own, or that not everyone and their dog knew about, so when you finally did see one pulled off by someone else or learned it yourself, it really left an impact. I am normally not at all a fan of fighting games. As a matter of fact, the only one I ever got into was MK. Who knows. I haven't played the game yet, maybe they will throw in a few fatalities and stuff that they don't list in the tutorials. Either way, having the game more approachable to everyone is a win-win situation to both the hardcore, new comer, and casual players of the game.

I Can't wait to try the demo out tomorrow.

I'm curious ludwig, how did you obtain those sheets of combos? Were they collected overtime from previous playings? Ascertained through questions from other players? Or just straight up internet e printed? I often dreamed of doing just that, but I never seemed to find the courage or quarters to do it.

Really great article. My only question is, how's the actual game? Does it feel good? Is it balanced? Did you encounter glitches or other problems? Do you think it will live up to the other competitive games at EVO this year?

April can't get here quick enough! I've wanted a new, fully mature rated MK game for years now and this looks even better than I could have hoped for. I played this for hours on end when I was a kid and now I have my son hooked on MK Vs. DC because of the superheroes mainly, but I am thrilled that now he basically only plays as Sub-Zero and Scorpion. I always respected Street Fighter as a really solid, good game but it was never on the same level to me as MK. But I think it was not about game play or anything else other than the fact that MK was so violent, and at 8 sneaking to play MK was too exciting. Lol...but I bought SF4 for my daughter because she loved the older XBLA one, and now we play it quite often too. Only bad thing is that where I am a MK fighter, I can not even win one game against her if she picks Chun-Li. And she's 7!!!! (which is awesome to me)

I definitely appreciate this kind of feature as useful for people who want to play fighting games alone, but what I'd love to see is some kind of impressions on how the game itself plays.

I'm glad they are finally doing this. I always wondered what was the point of trying to guess what fatalities when you could just find them on the internet. Back when MK2 was popular in the arcades, I was in 9th or 10th grade and me and this dude in spanish class would always bring the most recent and discovered fatality lists printed off the internet from the night before - keep in mind this was during the days when the internet was not really in its infancy per se, but definitely was something most people didn't have in their homes yet.

I've always thought it would be a good idea for the game to let you know 1 fatality per character, then unveil the rest through single player completions, bonus game unlocks, timed unlocks etc.

Good to see the game is finally somewhat taking that route. I want to enjoy MK on the couch NOT surrounded by printed FAQs from the internet for a change.
