Hmm.

Wow way to go sony, take a product that doesn't sell that well and lower the price to make people want to purchase it then raise it back up, if this was an error on sony's part in lowering the price on accident, you would think that if people were buying it at the lower price sony would keep it... but i guess not.

@asojax Maybe they didnt realise that the rise in sales had anything to do with the price drop, So they raised the price thinking people would still buy it.

No. That didnt happen. Noone bought it.

Considering the fact i never said i wanted to purchase one, was just pointing out the one reason people might be more inclined to buy a PSPgo at a lower price it seems silly for sony to raise the price back up even if it was an error.

But i'm glad to see your sticking to the topic at hand and offering sage advice on why anyone buying a PSPgo is a chump.

Ive never seen the point in having a Go. I can go just as easily with a psp 3000.

@LEONLEONLEON Lighter, more compact, no UMD, longer battery life. It's benefits were just offset by things like no way to transfer UMD games already purchased, not having the entire PSP library to download, and higher price. The Go was great in concept, but poorly executed.

Where does the longer battery life keep coming from, last I looked into the beast it was slated as comparable/equivalent battery life.

Actually a search thrown into Google seems to turn up little more than sitings that its equivalent or worse than its predecessors.

The battery life is shorter. I used to play PSN-bought MHFU with colleagues. 2 with 2000's, one with a 3000 and one with a Go. The 2000's would go first (probably age), the Go would be next then the 3000.

The 3000 is the best PSP, bar none. It saddens me when hipsters say the Go is the best and moronic people stuck in their ways say the 1000 is the best.

@VeeDeeVee Aside from the fact the new screens look like crap.

http://www.1up.com/news/customers-complain-psp-3000-screen-issues

I'd say 2000 is where it's at, but the cheap-feeling door flap sucks too. Surprisingly, my launch PSP feels like the best of the lot.

I guess since they were shooting for a uniform style across platforms, they not only cribbed the PSP's UI for the PS3, they also borrowed the concept of removing or downgrading features in subsequent hardware revisions. From taking what felt like an expensive piece of hardware and making it something that felt cheap and plasticky, to the removal of UMD/PS2 support on later revisions; they've definitely kept with that core concept.

@MEGATOOL How is having no UMD slot a plus? It isnt. And thats the reason its lighter, But does it really need to be made lighter? No. And the battery life is very similar.

Also, The PSP 3000 looks so much better.

A friend gave me his so I've played with one (and sold it since) and I concur: the battery is exactly the same. If there is a difference, it's only theoretical in numbers and hardly noticeable in actual practice.

Except that the PSP Go is significantly smaller and lighter, has blue tooth support, and is expandable to 32 GB. Although you do obviously have benefits the Go doesn't have. (UMD library support, removable battery, etc etc)

Anyone who bought a PSP Go deserves it. It was almost a sweet deal in the UK (10 free games) but it even tanked then because £200 was too much to ask for a 6 year old console with its optical drive ripped out.

Um this is a game review site, so if you're looking to avoid opinions, this is the wrong place for you to be. Yes there is gaming news, but it's primarily about people's opinions about the news, not just the news itself.

I bought a PSP Go AT LAUNCH and I don't feel I made a bad decision. But I didn't own a PSP before that, so I didn't have a single UMD disc, and my primary interest in it is it's portability. I need something I can fit in my pocket, and the 3000 is too damn big, and I have concerns about the same issue with the NGP. I know there's a lot of games I don't have access to, but pretty much all the games I'm interested in came out for download.

Well so much for thinking they had finally cut the price to what I thought it should have been at launch.

I don't hate the Go, sure I think its an abomination before god..... but that doesn't mean I "hate" it. Simply from a consumer standpoint, why would I pay more for less?

Better luck next time Sony.

Good to hear someone voice that they don't care for it, but don't have the need to bash it over, and over every time Joystiq has any sort of new article that has anything to do with the Go. I swear people love to just bash the Go endlessly, like it's own personal whipping boy. The Go was horrifically marketed (typical Sony), and the software support is terrible (limited library/no trade in), but the device itself it fantastic.

What everyone should have criticizing is Sony's lack of any sort of trade in program for old UMDs, and Sony not having the complete UMD library on the PS Store. The device is great. Just the total lack of support that is the abomination.

When will Sony learn? Does Sony even want to learn?

To anyone interested in a PSP I cannot recommend the PSPgo at all. PSP3000 has all the same functionality, can play UMD, and is cheaper. Sony should just stop manufacturing PSPgo.

I honestly don't think they could have possibly f***ed up this product any worse than they have. I seriously think that the PSP-Go should be taught in business school as how *not* to announce/launch/price/support/advertise a product. Then again, with the way they're handling the Xperia Play and the NGP so far, I don't think they've learned anything from this fiasco.

Actually you don't, since they decided to go with a smaller form factor. They decided to throw the whole huge selling point of getting rid of the UMD drive "highly superior battery life" out the window by cutting the battery down to size as well. So one of the few places the Go could have really shined .... it doesn't.

Your pretty much stuck with comparable battery life.

I already had a PSP-2000, but I like it, I loaded it up with PSP minis and took it to the cottage, I play my PSP2k with the TV out at home and I play the PSP GO at the cottage. the only thing I dont like about it is that it runs off the micro memory stick instead of normal, so I have a really hard time transfering games to it.

PSP go is a good buy right now, even at $200 ($189 on Amazon, no sales tax in most states) due to its 16GB internal flash alone. A 16GB memory stick duo from newegg (cheaper than most retailers) will set you back $50-$60. AVOID THE CHEAPER LEXAR ONE LIKE THE PLAGUE, ESPECIALLY THE 32GB ONE! Lexar actually doesn't even make these any longer and had a lot of issues - they die very quickly for some reason (like within a day, go read reviews). So the PSP+16GB stick argument is pretty invalid IMHO, especially because the M2s that the Go uses are much cheaper and you can stick a 16GB stick in there for 32GB total for $20 more (again cause they're cheaper).

I said good buy right now because most Gos ship with 5.70 firmware. Update that to 6.35 OFW and you can run LCFW PRO B2 which can run pretty much all ISOs. I'm not advocating piracy, you can use a normal PSP as a UMD dumper and dump your physical games like I did. Games load almost instantly, anybody playing off UMDs is seriously wasting their time even if the load times don't bother you. They're instant, seriously. Even if you have no interest in the Go's form factor, etc. you should still invest in a memory stick, run CFW/LCFW and run UMDs off of the memory stick. Makes life much easier.

Ironically, the more sturdy looking PSP is very fragile compared to the more fragile-appearing Go which is more sturdy. I don't recommend dropping either, but the Go is more likely to survive. The form factor is very cool for those of us that like our portables more portable. And like I said, if you run LCFW you are not limited to PSN. It's a good buy right now, especially if you got it for $150.

I definitely won't argue with the issues you take with the construction of the PSPs. My 1k is built like a brick with a sweet sweet auto ejecting umd drive that has never failed me.

My friend got a 3K for Christmas and it felt like it was built out of cheap and failure. Where I'm fairly certain I could put my 1k in a sock and use it as a blunt weapon against zombies and still be able to play it afterward.

tl:dr, I wouldn't be surprised if the Go was actually more sturdy then recent PSPs.

You said then when you meant than, no need to thank me.

My PSP 3000 has survived many drops off my desk. It feels weak but it's a very tough piece of kit. Problem with the 1000 is the halved Ram of the 3000, and its terrible display.

Oh and I've been using just Lexar cards (512mb, 4gb, 8gb and 16gb cards) with my PSP since the start and they've never had any problems. I still use the very old 4gb for PS1 downloads. Not a problem.

Less of the FUD, both of you, okay.

I have a PSP Go, and I like it, but I think Sony HAS to drop it to $150 for it to have any success. Although I have a theory they will discontinue it when the NGP comes out.

But I don't think it's accurate to say:

PSP Go Value = PSP 3000 + 16GB memory stick

The 3000 has a lot of features the PSP Go doesn't, AND they've dropped the price of the 3000, so they need to drop the price of the Go also.

@Dizazter Yeah, you're right it does need to be cheaper. I do think there is value if you add the stick, but you're right it isn't accurate to say that considering most would be fine without it (I have 34 UMDs and they all fit with only a little room to spare with the 32GB total flash. Dumping them all took 7 hours+ by the way)

@3dpenguin It's light custom firmware. There are two actually, this one has better compatibility with real ISO dumps. One does all the work in RAM and this one puts a few drivers on flash0, otherwise the PSP still boots up in OFW. I know they hate hackers, but they can't stop the PSP community this late

@VeeDeeVee Not FUD, seriously the higher capacity Lexar cards have problems (I have a 2GB one that is fine, but go read the reviews for the 32GB one. They even have an area on their site for it to get a refund). PSP 2k and 3k are definitely very fragile even from desk level. Google "psp drop test". You're right though, the phat lacks half the memory and the displays are inferior to 3k/go. The extra memory helps out some emulators

Never said my PSP wasn't a dinosaur, it is.

More ram would certainly be nice .... tho it seems that I'm really only missing out on using Skype on my PSP.

I also don't recall taking issue with the screen quality of the 3K.

My issue was with its general construction.

Honestly my first impression was horrifying, I was legitimately concerned that the PSP they just received as a gift was a knockoff. When I was holding it I literally went white as a ghost and my stomach sank.. I was terrified that it was going to say PSD on the back and play any of 11 preloaded atari-esq games.

See a product only gets one first impression and that impression shouldn't be "well this certainly is a cheaply made piece of "kit" "

You know how much of a problem that would cause... if they went and put an app into the xperia-play to play PNS PSP games people would hack it onto almost all new android phones out there then just download illegal copies of the games, Sony would lose even more money, the NGP is likely their hopes on making the PSN-Portable network profitable, but I think its unlikely due to the fact that they're still playing the portable consul game, which has proven to be unprofitable with every previous generation of the PSP market.
