Picking this up today for sure.

Oh and there's also a sale going on in the BioWare store. Lots of Dragon Age stuff for 15% off if you put in DA2LAUNCH code at check-out. Too bad the hoodie I wanted was sold out in my size :(

@Ospov Dear Joystiq, May we please have an option to add our birthdays or verify we are over 18 included in our profiles so we can watch "mature" videos on other devices? I can not scroll down the age wheel on my Droid to enter my birthdate. This really sucks when you only have access to the internet on your phone all day.

The 360 version has more vibrant colors. The PS3 version is clearly a bit washed out. And though the PS3's anti-aliasing is a hair better, it's just that. There's not going to be any discernible difference when sitting on the couch eight feet away.

Yeah, definitely looks great on PS3. Of course, DA1 looked great, too, it just didn't run all that well.

So far it seems they've solved that with 2.

@ItsameMatt03 Yeah, The 360 has better shadowing. But id take Anti Aliasing over anything like high res textures and good shadows.

Like Bad Company 2, Could have looked awesome, But it was ruined by aliasing.

Also, The PS3 MLAA is more than just a hair better than the 360 version. Look at the cheek of the left guy, There is a massive difference.

Also, This isnt a console fanboy comparison im making, Im just pointing out that im pleased that bioware have learnt how to use MLAA, Its going to mean better looking games in the future, From them. Mass effect 3, im hoping.

There's no auto-attack because it's been confirmed that there was an error when producing the console version of the game. I think it only affects the 360 though.

@Haizeus If it's referring to PS3 or 360 versions, The Escapist is wrong. Bioware have admitted leaving it out (in error!?!), and will patch it when they can.

Ha, me too. I actually just bought the Ultimate Editon of DA:O and started playing about 4 days ago. There is so much content in there I think I will have plenty to do while I wait for the "Ultimate" edition of DA2. This game does look sweet though. One game I will not be able to wait off on is ME3.

No doubt, same here as well. Most of the Orgins DLC I didn't even bother with in Origins. I think I got Leliana's song and the bank that had a castle attached to it.

@Gritzor It's especially annoying that this time around the launch day price we're paying doesn't even include all of the game's content. The 'Prince' DLC costs extra. That feels like a blatant rip-off. At least with DA:O the launch day content was included in the premium edition.

I hate having to faff around with buying some stupid company points just to piece together the completely game that the developers want me to play.

(Oh and yeah, the ultimate edition of DA:o is a good deal. Recently bought it even though I owned origins, now I've played awakening and the DLC!)

I learned that lesson the hard way with Fallout 3. At time I feel that I have to hold off on game purchases because of sales, DLC, and so forth. If nothing else it allows me to get to my back log of games that I have neglected playing.

Looking it up on wikipedia, we may be both right (assuming you got the downloaded PC version). For xbox, the premium edition had Stone Prisoner for free, but you still had to pay for Warden's Keep. The downloaded version got Warden's keep as well, to make up for not having the physical goodies from the normal deluxe edition.

I just got back from the rental place, so we'll see how this goes. I didn't much like the first one, but the demo for DA2 intrigued me.

Thanks for the review Justin. I'm going to start playing it tonight when I get home from work. Some of your comments about the recurring dungeons and lack of "epic-ness" are concerns - I thoroughly enjoyed spening most of my waking life for a year tied up in DA:O. However, Bioware has built up some serious trust with me. At this point, I'm pretty willing to buy most any RPG they put out, DA2 included. Even if it isn't up to the heights of the original, I'm sure it will be engrossing and enjoyable for hours on end.

I wasn't aware of just how reactive the main story for DA2 was, that actually sounds pretty cool. A lot of people complained that with something like Mass Effect 2, the ending was mostly the same no matter what your choices were. I sort of really like the idea that you make the villains yourself, I hope that's something that gets explored further in future games. That said, I'm glad to hear Justin enjoyed the combat, the demo had left me wanting it to be more reactive and dynamic. I guess I want it to be more like Fable, especially considering the ultra cool way Hawke fights with sword and spells in the Destiny trailer, but I figured a lot of my disappointment came from being Level 1 or so in the demo.

Also, if anybody's played the PC version with a save from DAO, can you tell me how that works? Is it just as simple as transferring a save from ME 1 to 2 was?

Great review, Justin. My DA:O experience was nothing if not epic (~110 hours, yikes), but I was disappointed to find myself feeling pretty unenthusiastic after playing the demo.

And yet I suspect I'll end up picking this up before the day's end anyway.

My biggest concern with DA2 was one I also had with ME2. When going from the first to second generation of the games Bioware has gone from producing RPG's to producing action games and calling them RPG's. I played the demo for DA2 on the PS3 this week and it is, ultimately, a button-masher and no longer has the depth of combat, character generation, character growth or inventory management that I associate with a western RPG. In fact, after reading this review, it is beginning to remind me of the abomination that was FFXIII and is starting to sound like an on-rails button-masher. I don't mind a good action game, just don't lie to me and try to pass it off as an RPG.

@Laertus you know you can go into the setting and change it so you don't play it like a button masher. you can make everyone auto attack to it's like the pc version.

On top of that, the demo locked you out of the character creator and all of the menus that will be available in the final game. So yeah, that pretty much negates the rest of your concerns.

I'm pretty sure elgilicious meant that they preferred the isometric "bird's eye" view you could play in the original on pc. I prefer my rpgs OTS (over the shoulder) so i can enjoy the environments and immersion more.

Opinions are like buttholes, everyones got one.

@DV8ing1 There's a trade-off between immersion and visibility: the more immersed you are, the less you can see. The combat in Baldur's Gate and its progeny has always revolved around fighting waves of enemies on expansive battlefields. OTS view, while immersive, limits what you can see, so it is not ideal for such a combat style; tactical zoom is.

Dragon Age 2 will either force players to fight on huge battlefields while staring at the back of their character's head or shrink the battlefields to accommodate the limited OTS perspective. Either way, it will deviate heavily from its (successful) roots.

Opinions are like tits: some are better supported than others.

As for Justin telling feeling like he was telling the story himself, I feel that way about all of Bioware's games. In Mass Effect I find myself doing it to explain why Shepard acts and responds the way (s)he does. I know I'm the one picking dialogue choices, but since such vague character and backstory is provided, I can't help but try to fill in the gaps.

My Shepard is always a dick too. In most games I want to play through as good first (DA2 for instance), but there's something so very satisfying about being a total jackass in the Mass Effect universe...I think it's when Shepard just punches annoying NPCs in the face. That always brings a smile to my face :)
