Xbox bigwig Aaron Greenberg tweeted today that Microsoft has sold 10 million Kinect units and 10 million Kinect games. The news comes a little over a month after Microsoft announced it had sold 8 million units.
The sales pace of the Kinect isn't just fast, it's apparently record breaking. Guinness World Records announced today that the Kinect is the "Fastest-Selling Consumer Electronic Device" of all time. The device sold an average of 133,333 units per day in its first 60 days (starting Nov. 4, 2010). Shockingly, the pace was reportedly faster than that of the iPhone or iPad for the equivalent period.

If you take one away from 10 million, you do not get 9 million.

@Nova Hands I would be playing mine a bunch, but over the last 3 months it seems like I'm getting a cold every other week. Tis the season. When I wasn't exhausted by the end of the day, I'd play it 2-3 times a week. My 4 year old would play it every day if I let him. Kinectimals and Kinect Sports have both been HUGE hits, and I haven't even opened Dance Central yet. I actually love my Kinect.

So... how about some cool games, Microsoft?... I'm starting to feel kind of cheated. Some of the launch games were cool and stuff, but at least announce something more, ok?

To space time continuum into perspective, there are still no solutions to y² = x³ - 432 such that (x, y) are integers :(

To put it in perspective 10m kinects, 10m games, would means all those people only bought one game for it. But also keep in mind a lot of people are buying it for experiments that dont even involve a 360 because it's more useful to modders who want a low budget mo-cap camera.

@PN04 - I wouldn't put much weight behind the "people are buying it to mod it" thing. I'd be surprised if there were even ten thousand sales made for that purpose.
It would be nice if we could attribute more of Kinect's sales to that, but the truth is more likely that older people saw Kinect on their morning programs and thought that it looked like a hoot.
(I hereby promise that I will never use the word "hoot" again, unless in connection with owls, or combined with "ers" to form my favorite body part, if not restaurant)

that's what people did with the Wii. i know people to this day that only have WiiSports for it. i mean it was fun and all, but come on.
but yea, either way you spin it, this is friggin impressive. i haven't tried it yet since i opted for Move instead, which is awesome in it's own right (KZ3 anyone?), but 10 million is an amazing number. i honestly didn't think it would sell when first announced but i'll just sit over here and eat my crow now.

Yeah, I'm thinking the fact that there has been only one kinect game sold for every one kinect unit sold isn't very encouraging for software sales. That would indicate to me that a lot of those 10 million people are pretty disappointed.

@Troy Powers - I got my sister a Kinect and Kinect Sports for Christmas, and she still plays it, despite not having bought any more software for it. I could see a scenario where people bought the thing to play one game on it, kind of like how people bought the Wii so that they could play Wii Bowling and Wii Tennis.
I'm sure there is plenty of buyers remorse out there for Kinect, but it does do pretty well at parties. Then again, that used to be true of Rock Band/Guitar Hero, and now everyone is tired of them. Either way, 10 million Kinect units, and 10 million games sold, is a major victory for Microsoft.

Oh, agreed! Selling 10 million of ANYTHING is a commercial success. My point is that having a 1:1 ratio of hardware units sold to software units sold is indicative of those people who bought the hardware either a) not having a very vast selection of software to choose from, or b) not having much of an interest in investing in their software libraries.

@Troy Powers - That's proving to be the new norm for casual systems, unfortunately. It's great for the platform holders, but it's awful for developers of third party software. Very few studios invest in big budget games for the Wii, because very few games without the "Mario" or "Wii" name on them sell. For every Wii Sports Resort or Mario Kart, there is a Little Kings Story, or Mad World. I fear the same fate is going to befall the Kinect, as publishers realize that their addressable customer base isn't the 10 million Kinect units sold, but rather the far fewer units sold to hardcore gamers.

@TylerDurden102680 Same, haven't touched mine since my cousins played Just Dance on Christmas. It's fun for mini games, but come on, push some more software! I don't know how well it plays, but Sony threw one of their big titles, Killzone 3, with Move support. Your move, Microsoft!

@DreadArrow - Dance games are kind of the weird exception. The same could be said for fitness games as well. Everything else sells like garbage though (unless it's Epic Mickey).

Good, now start making some games that I want to actually play (Gunstringer is a good start.) I already own a Wii that I don't ever use, don't make me say the same thing about my Kinect.

Wow. I figured it would be a hit, but this is probably even beyond what Microsoft predicted. I'm really looking forward to seeing what developers to with it in the future. A lot of companies will want to try and get a piece of this pie.

I dunno. As I said above, that means for every kinect unit that has been sold, there has been one piece of software sold to play with it. People aren't saying to themselves, "Hey, this is great! I've gotta get some more kinect games!"

Now how many of those are played on a regular basis? It's an impressive piece of tech but the software is pure novelty imo. A dance game that I bust out at parties is not enough to get me to buy one.
