According to "some reliable tipster types" speaking with ZDNet, Microsoft may be adding some new features to IPTV on the Xbox 360. The various tipsters specifically named "Orapa" -- a Botswanan city known for its enormous diamond mine -- as the codename for said project. Allegedly, Microsoft has plans to combine Xbox Live and its Mediaroom IPTV service, said to be heading to the Xbox 360 first with Windows/Windows Phone 7/set-top box following.
Orapa is said to incorporate "Xbox Live social features (like Avatars and recommendations)," and "Kinect sensing capabilities," as well as another rumored Microsoft project -- a video/music service codenamed "Ventura."
And if the rumors are correct, the service could be available by later this year -- ZDNet speculates that we could even see a test preview some time this month, though we're not holding our breath. Sources also indicate a "holiday 2011" launch, so we'll find out if this is all smoke has any fire behind it.

Great, more services no one asked for that will make Microsoft can raise the price for Xbox Live Gold.
Why can't they allow us to pay for the services we want and ignore what we don't? I don't want ESPN sports coverage, I don't want this Orapa... thing. So I shouldn't have to pay for it.

1 price increase since launch in 2002 and suddenly the sky is falling and Microsoft is going to raise prices every few minutes.
Oh, gamers.

If this requires some other subscription in addition to the XBL Gold, then I am way less excited and interested in this.

I think there will be original programming. Cool? Well that depends on what you like.
Microsoft has been building this service for a long time now. The Joystiq post doesn't mention this, but back in February a competing gaming web site interviewed Conan O'Brien's executive producer Jeff Ross at CES. According to Ross, Microsoft was quite willing to pay up to get O'Brien to do an XBox 360 show and not simply return to television. Ultimately it didn't happen because it was just too different and too much of a gamble for O'Brien.
In the same article about the O'Brien report the Seattle Post Intelligencer web site wrote that Microsoft has been in negotiations with the major US television networks on a subscription based streaming TV service. Basically eventually Microsoft it looks like would offer Hulu Plus and their own streaming service and the consumer could choose which one they wanted to pay for (or none at all). I have no doubt the major U.S. TV networks are using Microsoft as leverage against Hulu, and vice versa, because a lot of Hulu's contracts come up for renewal in September.

Forgot to add that I think there's a decent chance that 1 vs. 100 comes back or another Microsoft specific game show comes to the service when it launches.

Gold will be increased! No excluuusivezz! RABLE RABLE RABLE!
dey tuuk err hardxcores!
I think that covers most of the average replies to Microsoft doing something innovative.
I like the idea, I already use Media Center for my 360 and unless its a subscription service where you choose what channel you want. I'd probably use both at that point.

Best part was you jumping to the price hike conclusion in the complete absence of evidence. One increase in cost since 2002 and you suddenly everything is cause for alarm.
There are alternatives if you think the cost is prohibitive, no one is forcing you to partake in this hobby on this specific platform.

I'm still waiting for ESPN on my Xbox, even though it's Time Warner's fault, it's frustrating that Microsoft didn't have it worked out with them before launching it.

Here is the solution, don't buy it then. If you want free online then go to PSN or steam. Xbox charges for it's online multiplayer, you knew this when you bought the xbox.
Live has increased once in the eight years if the service and now people are acting like they ate going to do it everytime a new feature is added.
I have steam and PSN, but dispite having two free alternatives I still choose to pay for LIVE.

@Clydeftones agreed I don't see why people are complaining. Comparing XBL to PSN or Steam is like comparing apples to oranges. Can the price hike be due to the increased cost in infrastructure? Ever try to build a system that supports millions of users at a given time? Have you supported people downloading Terabytes of data in a day? Think of the BulletStorm Demo...around 2 Gigabytes...500 users downloading the DEMO uses a Terabyte of bandwidth. I'm sure more than 500 people downloaded that demo on day one.
I have no problem paying for the service...and with the family plan it's even more of a no-brainer 100 bux for me, my wife, and two daughters. People just like to find reasons to bitch.

Okay...I wonder what it can do beyond the current Mediaroom integration. I use my 360 as a receiver for U-Verse and LOVE it. Hopefully it means that my 360 can act as a DVR now AND as the master unit. Of course that would require that I always have the MediaRoom/Uverse client running on the xbox...or perhaps that's what the change is. Can't wait to learn more about this.
