UK Mortal Kombat tourney has a sweet arcade-size grand prize

The latest Mortal Kombat may be for consoles only, but that hasn't kept its publisher, Warner Bros. Interactive, from creating an arcade cabinet for the game ... which can only be had if you're the UK's best at MK. WBIE is teaming with GAME and GameStation to hold a tournament that runs from March 14 through April 11, culminating in a final round at the Gadget Show Live in Birmingham.

The winner will ~~take~~ lug home the custom coin-op cabinet, which houses a PS3, meaning it can technically be used to play Super Street Fighter IV, the upcoming Tekken Tag Tournament 2, or any number of fighters on the platform. The cabinet's artwork depicts Scorpion on one side and Sub-Zero on the other -- and looks pretty amazing, if you ask us. Check it out for yourself in high-res via the gallery below.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announces tournament to find the nation's hardest Mortal Kombat player with a final at the UK's largest consumer electronics event, The Gadget Show Live, NEC

Mortal Kombat, published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and developed by NetherRealm Studios, will be in the UK on April 17 for the final of the official Mortal Kombat Nationwide Tournament.

Taking place at the UK's largest consumer electronics show, The Gadget Show Live, NEC, the final competition will be held in front of thousands of gamers at Mortal Kombat's spectacular 'Fight Arena' stage in the Over 18 Gaming Zone. Players can enter by participating in qualifying rounds taking place from March 14th through to April 4th at various GameStation and GAME stores throughout the UK. The first prize is a full size Mortal Kombat arcade machine, containing PS3 console.

The 'Fight Arena' stage is set to be a huge draw at the event, allowing visitors to experience the bone-crushing, blood-spilling action on a massive HD projection screen. Even those who have not qualified for the final will be able to win spot prizes throughout the show as they do battle in the arena.

Both the UK and European finals will take place on Sunday 17th April and will be hosted by GameFace TV presenter, Julia Hardy.

It seems odd to me that they didn't go all out and use the Mortal Kombat layout for the buttons too. But I guess this way you can use it to play all the other fighting games, but this is an MK Prize! Not a fighting game prize.

In the right picture it actually is on the wrong side. I'm assuming it isn't an actual photo of the cabinet, or at least the one side is, they flipped it, and photoshopped the sub-zero artwork onto it.

That is pretty cool I am in the process of building a JAMMA+ cab for TMNT Turtles in Time and Simpsons 4 Player. I already have a Gauntlet Legends.

The Simpsons and TMNT are compatible boards so they will be housed in one unit.

I'd really like it if they'd sell this cabinet. I'm sure the price would be way too high, but i'd love a cabinet to throw some MAME PC in.

Only people from the UK can participate? If not, i'm taking a plane and I'll win that arcade and bring it to Mexico !! You'll see >:(

Seems to me that the last guy that would need it would be the guy that just won a tourney based on the very game...

Give it to the guy who comes in last. He clearly needs the practice.

Man... I hope an arcade resurgence occurs some point in my lifetime.

I was convinced that MK was finished as a franchise after they tried to go 3D and after the controversy/attention of the violence began to diminish, but good on them in re-inventing it and doing it with such determination. From the gameplay vids I've seen it looks great and the tower challenges, in particular, are a great bonus.

Hanging around the arcades as I was growing up, and it's good to see one of the staples of the industry making such a return.

Next, we need a Killer Instinct re-imagining.

So the arcade cabinets don't even use the same button layout as the Tournament Edition stick being sold with the game. Hm.

That's not a MK cabinet. A real Mortal Kombat Kabinet would have the freaking Mortal Kombat button layout! This is a disgrace.
