Riddler takes on bigger role (specifically Jigsaw's role) in Batman: Arkham City
49
Though The Riddler remained an off-screen distraction through the duration of Batman: Arkham Asylum, developer Rocksteady Studios is bringing Mr. Edward Nigma to the forefront in this year's Arkham City. But how will they update the puzzle-obsessed villain for Rocksteady's grittier Gotham?
Easy: Turn him into Jigsaw from the Saw movies! While much of that Saw comparison comes from the me-too trailer – seriously, imagine a Saw trailer but replace Jigsaw's baritone with Riddler's alto – it would appear Nigma is testing Bat's brains (read: your brains) by creating puzzles to solve. If you fail, an innocent denizen of Gotham dies. WBIE's being stingy with the assets, so all we've got to offer you are these images and our word. We'll update this post, or run another, when Warner's done milking this announcement for all it's worth.
[Update: We heard back from the PR outfit handling Arkham City and were told the video – yeah, the one that we saw almost two weeks ago – won't be available until a "later date."]

Eh? Wasn't this basically the Riddler's schtick from the Animated Series too? Unless he's doing the dirty work hands-on I'm not seeing the SAW connection.

They embargoed the Riddler piece of the Trailer until last Friday, and then they extended the embargo (really? they can do that?) indefinitely because the marketing team's left hand doesn't know what the right is doing.
They are trying to be too cute on the promotional side, and there is no need for it. This is an automatic day one purchase for me, and many other people.

Yes I was trying to be funny, sorry if it offended you. I was was expressing my appreication for what Rocksteady has done with the Batman franchise as usually liscenced games aren't that good and I truely enjoyed Arkham Asylum and Arkham City looks like a must buy to me.
The "No Homo" at the end of my comment was due to the fact that Rocksteady is also the name of a Male character in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon, the joke I intended was the dual meaning of Rocksteady. Again sorry if my joke offended you

That would have worked better, but by the looks of things even that wouldn't have prevented the downvote I got.

i'll be the first to admit that i was never a big fan of batman. between the great new movies and arkham asylum, however, i've finally come around. can't wait to see what kind of crazy shit is happening in "arkham city".

Same here. Although for clarification purposes, it wasn't that I disliked Batman at any point in my life. I just never was big on comic books or graphic novels of any kind.

Riddler's got a little bit of a hipster vibe to him in those screenshots.
Not to say I'm surprised. He was always a bit of a douche.

Probably elaborate traps of death where you're working against the clock or you can set off a trap that kills a citizen. I wonder if they'd let you continue the game if a citizen were to die or if you'd have to/get to retry.

It's a sad state of affairs when people think that Rocksteady is copying Saw. The Riddler has been around since 1948.

I don't think they are saying that the Riddler is a rip-off of Saw. What I believe they are saying is that in the game, he basically sits in one place, watching a bunch of screens where he has various people placed in situations where they will be killed if Batman cannot solve the puzzle and save them, which is similar to the Saw movies.
From what I recall from the comics, the Riddler doesn't really do that.

I've never seen nor care to see a Saw movie so the Jiusaw reference was lost on me. I dont consider him nearly a popular enough character for Riddler to be taking anything from him. From the headline, I thought it was a Batman character I wasnt familair with until I read the Saw reference.

Like it or not, Saw was popular enough to warrant 6 sequels. (Not that I saw any of them.)

When it comes to horror, having 6 sequels doesn't mean much. They're called B-Films for a reason.
-"House" has 3 sequels.
-"A Nightmare on Elm Street" has 6 sequels, or 7, whether you count FvJ as just a spin-off or not.
-"Friday The 13th" has 9 sequels, or 10, whether you count FvJ as just a spin-off or not.
-"Halloween" has 7 sequels.
-"Hellraiser" has 7 sequels.
-"The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" has 3 sequels, a remake, and possibly a prequel to take place before the remake.
-"Child's Play" has 4 sequels.
-"The Amityville Horror" must also have around 7 sequels, as well as a remake.

Here's the difference, the Saw sequels have all been popular and sold very well (in theaters and DVD). The other horror movies you listed were either flops or just direct to video.

@tendoboy1984 I'm not so sure thats the case. The have decent opening weekends then trail off into obscurity. Obviously they make money and dont cost much to produce.
I am not arguing the popularity of Saw I just dont think you can claim a character as old as the Riddler is ripping off anything else. Jigsaw isnt a very original character from little I know. Carnival of horrors where he is the puppetmaster, blood, torture, decisions etc...bout right?
