The Super Mario Bros. movie that should have been
45
Attendees of SXSW were privy to a trailer promising a more dramatic version of the tale of the brothers Mario. Now said trailer is online for all to see and we'd be remiss not to bring it to your attention. Joe Nicolosi's take on the Mushroom Kingdom is not only irresistible, it's pretty hilarious -- oh, and NSFW.

epicly epic. This is the only way Mario could make sense in the real world.

I would pay to see that movie if it were made. That video was awesome!

It was pretty cute, but at the same time it reminds me of every single 'indie' drama Mario Bros. movie fan trailer, with all the same inside-humour.
I'm perfectly happy with the Super Mario Bros. pulled into an alternate dimension with a dystopian cyberpunk-esque mega-city overrun with fungi ruled by humans evolved from dinosaurs.

@Epoque You're exactly right. We see another "realistic" take on the Mario games about once a month, and each one seems to be rife with "sly" references to drugs and Mario's failing relationship with Peach. This one was admittedly better than most, but the concept was old long ago.
I'm glad that you enjoy the original take so much. I don't care what anyone says, they had a fascinating concept to spin the games with. I've never seen another movie do what they did. It was just plain cool.
I actually help run a website devoted to the movie at smbmovie.com and frequent its fan forum. Ever been?

I don't go to the movie theater very much any more, but I'd pay the price of admission to see that. That was well done.

It still baffles me why people think the original Super Mario Bros movie was bad. If you treat it like a fantasy/sci-fi film with tenuous connections to a video game, it works really well. Of course people get really mad that they didn't make a straight adaption, ignoring the fact that it would have been an unmitigated disaster.
Posted: Mar 16th 2011 1:23AM mrantimatter said
@DrDrew Pinsky not really, Super Mario Bros is basically Alice in Wonderland with a plumber.
What we got was....I dunno, but it was just bad.

@mrantimatter What you got was Alice in Wonderland with a plumber, actually. What did you really want, two hours of a full grown man jumping on turtles and grabbing stars?

@Killface for President Then why don't you watch one of your friends play Super Mario Bros, because that's essentially what you want. I never got why people get so butthurt that adaptions are 100% faithful. If they were, why on earth would anyone chose watching some people act out a game when you could sit at home and play it, arguably having more fun?

@DrDrew Pinsky As an entirely unrelated concept, the '93 Super Mario Bros. really is a brilliantly original film. However, the connections to the source material are actually seen everywhere.
There's references throughout while even the story itself was influenced by the games: the King being transformed into fungus was inspired by Koopa's children transforming the 7 kings in SMB3 into creatures, while the concept of different dimensions was inspired by SMB2. The metallic egg in which Daisy was contained originally had an expanded role as a crucial element in operating the meteorite to access different dimensions. This came from the crystal egg used to open the portals in SMB2.
In the end, though, the movie is fun in its own way. It took the concept of the games and spun it in a fascinating way that people are too quick to judge as a failure. On the contrary, the film was hugely groundbreaking. It's box office-failure is the only thing that prevents people from seeing that.

Super Mario Bros is NOT one of those stories who needs a "gritty, realistic take" for a movie concept.
