FPM: First-person Mario

More than a Mario Half-Life or Left 4 Dead mod, this is what happens when the original Super Mario Bros. goes full-on modern FPS.

Agreed. The combination of being in this strange open void while not actually being able to see where you're going would drive me insane. If this is what the Mushroom Kingdom is really like, it's no wonder Mario yelps and screams like a deranged lunatic.

I think you're getting the completely wrong impression about this. I'm not sure what you think needs a lot of improvement: if it's the actual animation quality or if you think this is supposed to be a real game or what, but this was made by guys who just make youtube videos. They mostly work in special effects and not full animation. They also just did this one in three weeks as a background project behind all of their other projects. Just because Joystiq doesn't give you the whole background behind something doesn't mean you have a full understanding of it...
If you want to see what these guys actually do, it's freddiew on youtube.

Hey look at this thing that has already been done several times before!

@MrGreen It's one of the better ones, sure, but that doesn't change the fact that FPS Mario has become a tired and often repeated gimmick.

He's satirizing the ridiculous achievements gained in COD, nevertheless this video was really cool and trippy, I can only imagine the hallucinogenic potential of level 7.

I don't know who the sick, twisted architect/engineer of the Mushroom Kingdom is, but he sure as hell made sure you want to keep your balance!

Haha, that's pretty well done. Shows off just how much useless bullcrap there is in games these days.
It's not completely accurate though. It has proper music! Modern games don't have that, pfshaw. It needs a background ambient track, a nondescript generic "epic" orchestra track that nobody will remember with no real melody, or no music at all and just wind noise.

One would think Super Mario 64 would be a better fit for this, given the 3D environments and all.

wow, you'd almost think the entire nintendo fanbase has completely forgotten about Super Paper Mario, which was practically a launch title on the wii console. Not that it was necessarily a great game, but it had it's moments

Cool concept but stylistically crap. Why make it look like Modern Warfare unless you're trying to mock it?
Posted: Mar 21st 2011 4:41PM iceveiled said
I believe the statement isn't mocking modern warfare, it's mocking modern gamers in general, and how we now feel like we have to be constantly rewarded and positively reinforced with points, achievement unlocks and level ups.
Whereas when I was about 8 years old, actually playing Super Mario Bros. for the first time on my new NES I got that year for christmas, the reward was PLAYING A REALLY WELL PUT TOGETHER, FUN GAME.
