I really loved the first Shift. But this looks to be heading a more "simmy" route. And with heavy hitters such as GT and Forza already out, which still don't even hold a candle to PC racing sims, I can't help but feel this game is going to be lost somewhere in an area between arcade and sim racing games that nobody wants to play.

@Robborboy I dont think it will last long eather ... GT5 has a bigger fan base and more players on it 24/7 then the Sift servers ever had in there life time

@Robborboy

I'm in that boat - I already have Forza 3 so I'm hesitant to buy this.,

If it leaned more on the arcadey side, I would be getting it for sure.

I'd find this a lot more interesting if they didn't keep changing camera angles. I realize they're trying to show off the game, but I kind of wanted to just watch him play.

@DanielTobey Agreed, the cockpit view is impressive enough without having to resort to quick cuts. They probably also did it to avoid people picking up on any positional discrepancies between the ingame wheel and the controller wheel.

@DanielTobey yeah I agree... I wanted to see what he was doing. If they had a shift nob view would have been nice too.

@DanielTobey It feels like a Jean-Claude Van Damme movie. Multiple angles of the same action, but little substance.

That said, the game looks pretty decent but I'll stick with Forza 3 until 4 comes out.

i think i'll stick to my Forza+GT5. All i'm see is useless gimmicks and effects and they didn't say a word about improving physics. In shift 1 cars handled like crap.

I think EA has some sort of identity problem with their IPs. They have two racing games under the Need For Speed name, one a very fast-action arcade racer and the other, a simulation. They should drop the NFS prefix and focus on Shift being it's own franchise. The same can be seen in their simultaneous production of both Medal of Honor and Battlefield 3. How can they reconcile two games that are so familiar in gameplay and presentation? EA, you confuse me.

@(Unverified) It's called "Shift 2 Unleashed", with Need for Speed a tiny footnote on the cover art. I think they already have.

@Shrewsbury Yeah I don't think anyone is going to confuse the two. That's like saying people will have difficulty knowing the difference between Star Wars: The Force Unleashed and Star Wars: The Old Republic. Everyone knows what to expect between Shift, Hot Pursuit, and Underground (which I wish they would bring back...I love me some drift).

Same with Battlefield and MoH...battlefield is a team, objective based game. MoH is all about the campaign with standard fare Multiplayer thrown in for good measure.

I think you guys are underestimating the idiocy of the average consumer. You guys frequent a video game blog, so you all obviously know the minutia behind these games (i.e. the difference between Criterion developing a game that's completely different than Slightly Mad Studios' outings.) Believe it or not, but there are people who see "Call of Duty" and "Need for Speed" and assume they're getting a product made by the same people time after time.

In any case, "Unleashed" doesn't really scream "simulation," does it?

It may be a bit altered to sound more ferocious than it actually is, but nonetheless, its just incredible audio work on the cars.

Yeah I noticed that too. They really nailed the growl of an open V8 (though it was a bit bass heavy on my system) - but the whine of that gearbox! Oh I love that sound!

I also loved the glowing rotors in the corkscrew. :D

I have a problem... I got a projector and I freaking love it... Takes up the entire wall worth of screen space.. But now I can't play racing games cause I only play with my G27 wheel... Also, I can't afford the racing set up... Nor do I have the space for it.. Does anyone know of some kind of couch set up?? Or should I just give up my racing carreer? Lol

So, what is the problem exactly?
You have a wheel.
You have a life sized screen.
What's the issue?

Check out Wheel Stand Pro. You can use any chair/couch set up. I've had mine for my G27 and it's the best investment I've made in gaming, by far: http://www.wheelstandpro.com/

I built mine from thick pvc pipe. It is extremely sturdy, you can sit on it. You can jerk the wheel as hard as you want back and forth and it won't budge the stand. Most racing stands are very wobbly, especially where the wheel connects to the stand. I took off the bottom part of my wheel and attached it to 1/2" particle board with 4 bolts and wingnuts. Mine is in the guest bedroom with a trundle bed that pulls out. It comes apart and has longer legs to use for a couch at friends' house. I keep it in the closet when not in use of course.

If this game is trying to compete with sims, why would they showcase a pro racer playing it with an automatic transmission.

Correct me if im wrong, but the GT5 vids included gear shifting. right?

@Ch1d0r1 GT5 did INCLUDE manual trans, but I don't believe it's a necessity, it's an option. All it means is every time the speedometer hit a certain number, you have to press R2 (depending on your configuration).

@RequiemDogma try that in wet conditions with FR car. You would wish you had ability to short-shift. And selecting gears is far FAR more complicated than just selecting new gear when rpm maxed. Not to say auto-t is slower (lap times) than manual (if used correctly).
