sounds like a neat little game. I can't wait to get my 3ds =). Does anyone know if rental services like gamefly or blockbuster will have 3ds games next week? Or is it going to be a long while? I like to rent my games usually instead of buying them.

Gamefly has them starting day 1. I plan on renting quite a few myself, my Q is full.

I want to try this, but I'm not sure if it's a purchase for me. SSFIV is the only 3DS game I have preordered at the moment. I'm debating on this, Ridge Racer, and Pilotwings Resort for a second game.

Local retailers by me (Best Buy) have demo units set up with Pilotwings Resort loaded. Check by you and maybe that can confirm/deny your desires for that game at least.

Based on other reviews I read (GoNintendo, IGN, etc.) Pilotwings Resorts is an incredibly shallow and short game.

I tried the 3DS demo at Best Buy and the game is pretty much Wii Sports Resort's island flyover mode. That's basically it.

And I can't see the 3D! :( I guess it's cause a have a slightly lazy eye...

This looks like a really interesting game, but at the same time it seems too small-scale to justify a retail price tag. Perhaps it would have been better served as a kickoff to the 3DS's downloadable game service?

Dear Nintendo, I know the 3DS does 3D. I also know I can't see 3D on my monitor and thus all your screen shorts are 2D.

Please stop putting that stupid message on every screen shot.

It's a necessary promotional technique. How often do people freak out about upscaled (and thus very jaggy) still images of Wii games? Similar concerns could come in to play here

Though hopefully that message will disappear from official screens after launch

If you can grasp the concept you're already in the upper quartile of the population regarding intelligence. As everyday news shows us there are very stupid people in this world, and chances are good that even messages like this won't go through to a lot of them.

I have a hard time understanding why the score is 3.5/5 instead of a 4/5. It reads like a mostly positive review to me. Can we delve a little deeper into the negatives? Given that this is a launch title, I guess I'm more interested in how well this is pulling off the 3D effect instead of how well the game plays.

I have SF pre-ordered, but I've read in reviews that it doesn't really utilize the 3D effect that well. I'm excited that SF is going to be a lot of fun and that it is coming as a highly recommended game - but I also need a game that reinforces the 3D effect that the system is supposed to be known for. I was hoping Steel Diver would be that game, but I don't think this review really answered that question for me.

@(Unverified) a big negative is that its very very short
another is that they removed features from the tech demo it was made from

Sounds cool, but Pilotwings bumped this off of my launch purchase list once I heard that the (consistently high-quality) Monster Games was developing. I'm sure they'll both be fine games.

i think these early reviews deserve some talk about graphics and sound. Dont you think a new 3D game should talk about the 3D aspect just a little? Also, all I heard were positives with not one negative and it gets an average star rating.

You just made up a number for no really good reason.

It's an alright game but I imagine it will only sell because there is just such slim pickings on the 3DS during its first couple of months.

I know, right? I was looking at games that have a firm release date, the next decent games aren't til June (Shin Megami and Pinball Hall of Fame). Even then, after launch the US has only 8 games releasing between now and July. Granted, this is better than the original DS's line up (think there were about 15 games within the first 8 months), but I really wish they could have launched a killer app with it like Zelda OoT, Star Fox64, or an original mario game ala New Super Mario Bros line.

looks good.

When are we going to hear anything about Shadow Wars? The pedigree behind it makes ti seem to be the title to get at launch, yet it seems UBI forgot to market the game.

Take off a half of a star for complex controls, lack of longevity/replay value, and... the jump in difficulty?

Trying maybe a little too hard to justify the score here :)

@Jinketsu this will make it easier. Put all possible star combinations in a hat. Pull one out. That is how a score is derived.

I am not saying this to troll. I have my 3DS preordered, but I get a distint "Virtual Boy" vibe from this game.

Something that makes me think if the 3DS fails, in 15 years people will be talking about how Steel Diver is one of the only good games released for the short lived system and it's worth tracking down a 3DS and the game to play it.

Im confused. Virtual Boy feel as in the game was made for Virtual Boy, or as in the 3DS is going to bomb like the Virtual Boy?

Steel Diver just feels to me like a very light game. Launches are filled with them now. Remember Ping Pals for DS? Hopefully not, it hurt. Feel the Magic XX/XY, or even Ridge Racer DS? Mostly all just served as technical demos. I got a similar vibe to pretty much all these games at launch. No depth, just some "Wow, its 3D!" for the fans.

@Punkrawk Bbob

I really don't know how to explain the feeling.

Those were all mostly mini games or games from already existing franchises. If you look at VB games they are all pretty unique. I personally have never seen a submarine shooter game before, so I guess that is the feel I'm talking about. Little gems that we only might get once in a lifetime.

Also I guess feels like the Neo Geo Pocket. Which also met an untimely end but had the best fighting games on any potable system ever.

Also I hope you are not saying Feel the Magic was crap. That game was awesome.

I'm praying the 3DS will be a success, but I have a feeling that the US's collective hypochondria will have everyone yelling in the streets saying they are going blind because of the 3DS.

Not saying it was bad, just saying that it wasn't enough to justify a $30 price tag. Entertaining, but not as much longetivity as say Animal Crossing or The World Ends With You, which DS games really coulda used out the gate.

Getting sidetracked, but I owned an original DS (purchased at launch since the Metroid Demo was so awesome) - Then sold it right before the PSP came out because the lack of games was killing me. Then rebought the Mario Kart DS bundle. Then sold that after awhile and repurchased a DS Lite like most people. That ended up breaking (top screen went all wonky) so I got a DSi. Just traded that in towards a 3DS. I think Nintendo may have taken far too much of my money with the DS.

The 3D slider is there for a reason you know. If people are that paranoid of 3D blindness (which will never happen), they can just TURN THE 3D OFF!

Imagine that!

You can't compare the 3DS to the Virtual Boy.
- 3DS: a handheld system that has optional 3D (hence the 3D slider)
- Virtual Boy: a clumsy table-top unit that you had to press your face into so you could see grainy black-and-red images

Two completely different devices. Plus the 3DS builds off of the immensely successful DS line, so once the price drops a bit it will sell like crazy.

I'm hopeful that we won't see as many "revisions" with the 3DS. It already has cameras and it's as small as a DSi, so the only improvements they can make would be better battery life and bigger screens.

It will be really hard to sell a device to people called 3D, if you keep telling them to turn off the 3D.

I think you are being too oblivious on peoples (especially Americans) ability to bitch and nitpick about everything. Just look at every time an iPhone is released. Top news stories every single time are about how people complain about this and that not working right, usually nitpicks over small details, YET IT MAKES THE NATIONAL NEWS. Absurd.

You throw in that plus the hypersensitivity people are over any minute health concerns and you will have article after article of people complaining about headaches, migraines, cross eyed, etc. And I'll be honest, I've played the 3DS for maybe 20 min and I felt a little woozy afterwards.

Like I said I hope I am wrong.

The VB had the uber successful Gameboy and Nintendo had not yet had a failure when it launched and looked what happened to it. You can't just assume everything is going to be peachy keen. I'm mostly playing devil's advocate here.

This is the only game out of the launch day list that I kind of want. So far it's all AR games for me. But the price is making me hold back. I'd rather wait for it to drop in price (who knows when that'll be for a nintendo game) and pick up Kid Icarus, Zelda and Animal Crossing 3DS whenever they come out.
