@mywhitenoise The answer is both. Sony for suing in the first place, they have somewhat some grounds but they're going after one person; however this is just to set an example.

Now the followers are because as you said, they are following the company, but why shouldn't they? Of course Sony wouldn't do the same, hell the only reason they know we exist is because one faithful day our details popped up in their database. They know us as consumers, not as people, and that is why your argument is out of context.

Now I move my point onto you, your claim; Christianity, Buddhism, hell The Church of Google. Simply take your statement and replace it with either of them, it applies, but people still follow the religion. All this guy was doing was voicing his opinion, he didn't need to be critiqued. To be honest, I didn't have to write this, but what do I care, I love it!

You know what I hate, whitenoise? Low lifes like you who side with people who destroy a perfectly good, secure gaming system that we all paid for to use responsibly, for personal gain.

So what if a company is right for once? Is it rare to side with a corporation? Yes. Does that mean they're always wrong? NO.

I'm willing to bet I own more PS3 games (both physical, and digital) than you and most people commenting on this article, doesn't mean I'm going to go down on my knees and suck Sonys balls because some dude hacked HIS own console.

Some people act like hacking this was some sort of advancement for civil rights, when in reality all it did was mess up something that everyone liked.

If George Hotz wanted to keep other OS he shouldn't have agreed to download the update that removed it

Ya dude, it's not like the company is hunting down little guys ala RIAA and it's Wheels on the Bus mishap. This is a company that is RIGHTFULLY bringing to justice for destroying their product's health. He is a worm.

I realize this is completely out of your scope of imagining, but try just for a moment to imagine that you yourself have something to offer the world at one point. Now imagine this idea, physical or IP, is so successful that you end up forming a small company to handle the demand. That small company becomes a large company, then a corporation supplying millions of people with a product they enjoy with their friends and family. Now imagine some little prick comes along and does something that potentially (if left unchecked) could lead to massive profit loss, a loss in shareholder's belief in your company, and at the end of the day ends up costing your company employee jobs and removes the possibility of expanding or catering to your audience until it's handled. Sony went through and dealt with this on the PSP, they shouldn't have to deal with it again on the PS3. All because this guy had too much freetime and some bullshit idea that your product doesn't do what he wants it to do so he has the right to change it for the world. Instead of just like... not buying your product, he decided to form it into something that's free and open for all.

I know, it's entirely difficult for you to understand that hard working individuals are paying the price at Sony because one little asshole wanted to ruin your company's product. All so you can get your "free gamez!" because you rather spend your time bitching on the internet and playing games instead of working and earning money to buy things like the rest of us who support the industry you shit on daily. Prick.

Why can't you get it through to your pea-brain that PIRACY ERODES INDUSTRIES and if it were to become too widespread, no developer will make games for a system where the users can just STEAL their product.

Developers aren't in the business of gratifying your every desire, you twit. They're in it to be profitable and prosper as a business.

As a game developer and a victim of piracy , I spit on you and all filthy pirates. By the way, you can stop repeating how you own so many games because NO ONE CARES.

Mistakes were made and its been proven no console is 100% secure, was silly on Sony's part to leave that coding unattended, but what's done is done. Doesn't give mister hotz here or his coding friends the right to showcase to everyone how to do the exact same thing. Theres no point talking about how anti piracy you are, when you open the door for pirates to follow you in.

I'm all for people doing what they want with thier products in th privacy of thier own home, if I should decide to smash my PS3, that's my choice, but theres comes a point where you step across the line.

As much as I admire Hotz's skills and wish I had them, I also think he deserves everything he gets.

That is quite possibly, the most utterly ridiculous fail of an analogy I've ever heard.

If anything, the people siding with Sony are the people who would side against BP. You've got it all ass backwards.

If you think of the PS3 as an environment, albeit a virtual one, Hotz would clearly be playing the part of the Deepwater Horizon, and his hack would most definitely be the explosion that released several billion barrels of filth and toxins into the environment, screwing it up for everyone.

Incidentally, this would make you and all of the pathetic apologist cheaters like yourself BP, repeatedly trying to downplay the gravity of the situation while sitting around with your thumbs firmly lodged in your collective assholes for weeks on end taking absolutely no responsibility for the situation.

See? Now your analogy actually makes sense. Have a nice day.

That's a pretty long rant in support of a company who seemingly has no recourse against the exploits of a teenage punk. If that's the case, that's pretty bad planning on Sony's part. Sony should focus its money fixing the hole and lowering its costs and increasing its revenues rather than on a fruitless legal campaign to put the genie back into the bottle. At best, Geohotz is some kind of a hippy digital rights crusader. At worst, he's a troll with hacking skillz. Hacker or not, you don't feed the trolls.

Yeah, the extent of piracy can be exaggerated, but that doesn't change the fact that it still happens.

You'll probably find that pirates only bought the real COD:BO because they wanted multiplayer, if that's the case, its a sad world that we have to resort to online capabilities in order to prevent pirates pirating.

Ya, that's an awesome idea. Let the hackers of the world know your open for business and to run rampant on you. Lets see how well that works. Oh wait, Sony already did. Lets ask the PSP how that strategy worked out for them.

"PSP, how are you doin' little fellah?"
PSP: "it hurts... so bad... please, feed me some games."
"Sorry, no can do buddy. The third parties left town because your hardware is insecure and can run pirated software without the need of any additional hardware."
PSP: "...but I have the better graphics... and hardcore audiences love me for not pushing shovelware on them..."
"So sorry PSP. Maybe next time. Here, have some nice PSN Minis to keep you alive just enough to satisfy fans until the NGP comes out."
PSP: *whimpers*

The monetary success or failure of a product does not dictate whether you have the right to steal it.

It's called principles, and obviously, you have none. I don't care if the best selling game made ten trillion dollars. That doesn't give pirates the right to steal it. Stop trying to legitimize your scummy criminal activity by telling yourself they deserve it because they're successful. Your stupidity offends me as a video game developer and a gentleman.

Also, please learn to type coherently.

Well that's a big ol sack of bullshit. Nintendo DS. It is undeniably easier to pirate DS games than PSP, and yet there are tons of great games for the system, and more continue to come out.

What I want to know is what's up with all the commenters getting so defensive over this like it matters? Are you all sent from Sony? Are you that idiotic and oblivious that EVERY CURRENT CONSOLE has already been hacked and able to play pirated games? Why does PS3 finally getting to that step get your panties in a bunch?

Lastly, also keep in mind not everyone jailbreaks to pirate. My iPhone is jailbroken, and I haven't pirated a single thing with it. I only did it to change themes and download different 3rd party apps. Not everyone with a hackable device is running around twirling their mustaches thinking of their next dastardly plan to take down companies.

I appreciate your comment. The only reason I reiterate that I make games is to hopefully help some people here understand that companies are made of real people, with lives and bills to pay and families to feed. It's extremely hard to make one's living as an artist in just about any medium, and that difficulty is increased significantly when your profits are deeply cut into by the theft and subsequent free distribution of your product.

Piracy hurts those individuals as it hurt me in the past. I'm not in any way, shape or form trying to say I'm better than anyone else, I'm just trying to put a human face (or voice, or post, in this case) on the matter where the supporters of piracy seem to think it's them against a huge, faceless evil corporation.

Even if I thought Sony was an evil corporation, I'd STILL support them in this because ultimately, it's the smaller third party developers who will be most hurt by the situation, not Sony. We have to remember to make that distinction here. I hope that makes it clearer.

1st of all, I don't think it matters much whether it's Sony or not, its annoying when you pay for something and other get it for free, you used a superb example, jailbroken iPhone.

Would it matter if your iPhone wasn't jailbroken? Are the thrid parties that crucial to you that you HAD to jailbreak it in order to get those? While you may not have jailbroken it to get free games, I know quite a few people who own one who did and you could tell us you aren't getting games free, we can't prove it, but theres nothing stopping you, the temptation is already there, considering you've already jailbroken it. Apart from your inner guilt, is there really any reason why you would bother buying angry bird games when you can get them free? Like you said, you've jailbroken it, if you went through that trouble, why not just go the whole way like the others who jailbroke thiers?

@Monkey with glasses

Are you serious? Money makes the world go round, hate it or love it, there are very few humans that aren't greedy, none the less, piracy isn't just cheating the big corp, its cheating the game developers who work hard to make that game, and the other people who work hard to pay for that game.

Your arguement has no structure.

Basically you're saying its okay to mug someone, because they were being greedy, or rob a shop because they were being greedy, or steal from your own parents, because they want to have more disposable income to provide you with a better life.

And trust me, when you invent a way to equitably distribute food to the several billion people starving in the world, get each and every man, woman, and child clean drinking water, provide affordable quality education to everyone in the world, and provide them access to current, affordable medicine, I'll be more than willing to throw all the money I have at your feet.
