3DS update adds 3D OK Go video to home screen

The alt-rockers of OK Go have made a career of staging elaborate videos to garner attention for their music, but their new stunt may be the oddest yet: They're sneaking into 3DS systems. That's right, updating your 3DS on Sunday will beam OK Go's 3D video "White Knuckles" right to your home screen.

The video will be deleted with the following update, so savor its three-dimensional dog-training amusements while you can. If you want a preview, you can watch the video in stupid, revolting 2D after the break.

Side note: Our friends with Japanese 3DS systems got a similar update, but with a video of Koji Kondo and some other Nintendo folks playing the Super Mario theme. Feel free to argue about who's getting the better end of that deal.

hmm not to be a stickler, but i'd rather mandatory updates DON't come with music videos i'll never watch...

I knew there was a reason why I didn't like you.

Even though I like feature-filled updates, this sounds awesome. Videos/photos taken with proper 3D cameras usually look superb, so this could really showcase the 3DS' 3D abilities (which I'm guessing is there aim).

It'd be nice if we could keep ahold of them for later if we wanted them, and even exchange them (so that we can watch the Japanese one, too).

I guess there'll be one person who doesn't update so they can hack it and keep the video, but it better not be George Hotz. That guy looks like a douche.

That music video wasn't shot in 3d as far as I know. What we will see here is 3D added in post. It's the same thing a lot of the lesser impressive 3D movies that come out do.

So, I've read through that press release, and somehow I'm missing the part about them deleting the video after the next update. Where is that information coming from?

At any rate, I hope that information changes and the video is still available for a while after that. I think it would be cool to be able to go back and view these kinds of things in 3D fairly often. It would be fun to show off to friends, I'd say.

There is a message about the video being deleted after the next system update following the end of the video when viewed on the 3DS.

That video was actually really impressive. I love it when you see trained dogs that are actually happy. You could tell by how they reacted to the band members that they were really happy animals.

Japan wins, I'm afraid.

I never know that video was shot in 3D. Sweet, I love OK Go.

This band never met a gimmick they didn't like. I guess it's easier than playing decent music...

You may have gotten downvoted, and I probably will too, but I don't care, that is 100% true. Mediocre music set to interesting videos.

@baby sea tuna I like their songs. Sure they're not aiming for the skies, it's just catchy, well-done music that sounds sincere in its simplicity. Just fun songs, y'know? The music videos kinda drive that point home in that they're impressive but low tech.

Was this a video for 3DS, or ikea?

Breaking news! Nintendo and IKEA have partnered up to bring us a new, cheaper 3DS!

It shall be self-assembled and called 3DS Ljus.

Super Mario Theme always wins. Not only is it highly nostalgic, it's just great music. Try learning it on an instrument sometime, so much fun!

the mario one in the Japanese update was a little disappointing -- it wasn't shot in 3D and it's clearly cookie-cutter after-the-fact 3D. This will probably be pretty neat if it was actually shot in 3D first.

My guess is this is going to be a recurring trend -- video or some kind of 'bonus' that comes with each update. Hoping they made the AR games update-friendly so that they can put additional games and such as part of updates too.

This should be a nintendogs promo, lol. Sadly, no cats in the video :( But it was awesome!

Actually, okgo is rather legit. They've released three very good albums and only got (extra) notoriety from one of their (many) silly videos on the whim of the internet. I don't think that alone is excuse enough to knock them.

The UK (and rest of EU?) got a Wildlife-y video in the latest update. Got mine early this morning (thank you Tesco Entertainment!!). It's got a bear catching a salmon in FREE-DEEE.

hell yeah Ok Go is awesome. One of the best shows I've been to.

I'm not the biggest Ok Go fan, but they're a pretty good band. Also, a book I read last month had a chapter written by the lead singer.

Unfortunately the REAL point got missed by everyone: What is the "update" for? What features does it add or is it an anti-piracy measure or what?

Shame no one actually thought to investigate this.

HEY JOYSTIQ! Some of us can't see in 3D in the first place, having only one eye to work with.

Not cool.
