Mega Man 3's Proto Man theme gets shredded, moves us
22
We typically wouldn't characterize most video game theme song covers that get sent our way as "soulful" or "profound," but then again, most covers that get sent our way aren't as incredible as Dario Montanino's electric take on Mega Man 3's Proto Man theme. Check it out in the video below.

Now do a cover of Zero's theme from MvC3 (which, for all the nerds out there, is actually an extended remix of his MMX2 theme with a bit more variety in the notes given how repetitive the original was) and we're in business.

For such a threadbare plot, it is incredible the art that the Mega Man universe has inspired. The Protomen is literally my favorite band (video game or other) & seeing them live at PAX prime was far and above the best concert I have ever attended.

It amazes me how a group of people with way too much free time and unbound creativity could turn a lighthearted cartoony series with super-deformed cutesy robots into a dystopian gloom-and-doom scenario about an oppressive and genuinely threatening Wily who managed to take over the world.

@CrumbBum I'm sure part of it, at least musically, is because the limitations of the NES hardware meant the original composers had to focus on making catchy melodies. That left a lot of room for interpretation years later. You can take the same melody and change everything around it for a cool new sound. :)

Wait. We aren't allowed to re-imagine things anymore? I guess that pretty much counts out 90% of movies then, huh? Even Disney classics like Alice in Wonderland was a novel before it became a movie.

Way to down vote the guy that actually knows what he is talking about. That is exactly what makes The Protmen so awesome.

I... don't think his comment was an insult in regards to The Protomen.
At least, I don't think it was.
I think he was genuinely stating how impressed he was that they were able to create something from so little, it's just the way it was worded that made it sound negative.
But if he actually was smack-talking them, then burn him with fire.

That doesn't surprise me.
Semi-related: the character artist for Megaman Zero and Megaman ZX (Toru Nakayama) did fanart of Megaman, Protoman, and Roll in the MMZ style:

I wasn't saying it as a bad thing. Before anyone else hastily downvotes me, I meant that I find what they did curious and interesting. I meant that in a positive way. "Odd" doesn't always mean "bad".

I did mean it positively. I find the idea of creating a tragic techno rock ballad from an 8-bit video game about a cute robot taking down a mostly harmless mad scientist impressive and baffling.
When I said "too much free time", I meant that constructively.

@PartManPartAwesome agreed. You see an unassuming guy in a baseball cap and it's almost a given that some badass shred is about to occur. That being said, this is a decent video.

Amazing video. Would love to see this guy do something with the early Castlevania soundtracks or Suikoden 1/2 :)
