We wish other developers were this sentimental about their earlier mistakes -- maybe then we could finally get that Laddergoat game we've always dreamed of.
Mortal Kombat's first two downloadable fighters revealed

Wait, you mean to tell us that even though the game hasn't actually come out yet, you're already bored with the roster of fighters included in Mortal Kombat? How is that even possible? Regardless, you don't need to worry -- Netherrealm's Hans Lo recently revealed to CVG that two new kombatants are already in the works for post-launch DLC: Series regular Kenshi, and "Scarlet," a fully fleshed-out character based on a glitch in the old Mortal Kombat arcade machines, which turned Jade, Kitana and Milena blood red.
Lo explained, "People always thought it was a hidden unlockable character and it wasn't, it was purely a programming glitch." He added, "She's no longer a glitch - she's an actual character, and she'll be coming pretty soon post-launch." How come people are so uncool to DLC in fighting games but everything else gets a free pass?

Way to curb my enthusiasm about the game.
It's Mortal Kombat, you really shouldn't be pushing your luck like that.

I guess Scarlet is technically a new character. No hate for Kenshi, but it would have been nice to have another new character as DLC.

This is ridiculously stupid. Unless they are purely skins of other characters ( which I highly doubt ) they are already gimping people who don't want to pay more.
Like Kazama said, Mortal Kombat isn't exactly known to be the most polished or popular games out right now and to be trying to rake in as much money as possible POST release is probably not their best bet.
It's a stupid practice that needs to be stopped. 1st Day DLC is really one of the worst things about todays gaming market.

@ZGiSH It sells, so it can't be that stupid. If I owned a buisness, and I found a way to make more profit off of it, I'd jump on the opportunity. We all complain, but I bet there are going to be a good amount of people who buy this DLC on day one.

It says nowhere that it's day 1 DLC. It's an announcement for DLC. MVC3 did the same thing.

Yeah, but I wonder how much more business they lose from people like me, who were going to buy the game, but now would rather just wait until they can get all game content in the Komplete Edtiion that eventually becomes $29.99 instead of being nicked and dimed.

It's really about high time web hags stopped whining about DLC altogether, really...or would you rather not have the option of getting any extras in your video games at all?...

@ZGiSH I seriously agree with you EA's the worst about that shit too. Just because I hate EA so damn much I'm buying most if not all their games USED. I don't give a rat's ass about DLC nor do I care about some stupid multiplayer pass in a game that doesn't need it. (Dead Space 2)

Why anyone gets bothered by a studio announcing that they want to continue to support a game after its release is beyond me. Its when they announce release day DLC that bothers me. If they put out new fighters every few months thats fine. You Realize that when a game is finally released its been essentially finished for some time freeing the dev up to start working on new content. They dont finish developing the game the day before its released.
Would you rather them work on a game for 10 years until they run out of every conceivable way to add stuff and then have to charge $500 a copy to recoup cost?

When dlc first started it seemed like it was content that devs came up with after the fact and they felt like it could be a positive add on the the original game. Now it's content that they started on when the original product was being produced that they chose to withhold. They're not 'continuing to support' they're just sucking another $10 out of people like you who chose to bend over and take it. And if you can understand why someone is bothered by this; it's because your face is too deep in the pillow.

Actually I agree with you entirely. People think that they should be able to get an entire series for one price tag. It's moronic. "Why didn't they just patch Hoarde Mode into Gears of War 1?! Why didnt they just include all the campaign into one as well?? Clearly its one story, they must be raping us by spreading it out into three separate releases!"
It's crazy troll logic, that's for damn sure. Dev Team A designs a came concept from start to finish, then begins to develop it. Once they finish and the game is in testing / publishing, most of Team A is free. So they start working on additional content. So if they finish before the game is out, should they delay the game so they can repress the discs and QA test those new characters? Not to mention a lot of this is split into budgets. MK has a budget of X dollars. Once its done, thats all the publisher is giving them. So then they receive a budget for Y dollars for DLC, not for adding to X's budget.
It's business people, get over it.

I agree release day DLC is worse. I think more people are less accepting of POST launch dlc if they hear the details about it beforehand (like now). Honestly, the devs of Mortal Kombat might as well of kept it a secret and announced it couple months down the line after the game itself had been released and after the game has lost a bit of steam/gone under people's radar. Thus saving them the trouble and flak they would of gotten from the gaming community, but w/e.

It is exactly "just business," and that's why I think you're putting a little too much faith in these companies' generosity and more importantly, honesty. You really think that's how the budget meetings go? "Hey Developer, here's some money. We want you to spend X on the game and Y on DLC."
It's more like "Please producer/publisher, please give us some money so that we can finish our game. Here's how we plan to recoup that money: we're going to sell some of these characters we're already working on separately for more money."
It's the developers that tend to care about things like pleasing fans, generating demand for a sequel and, of course, making some money. The production companies care about MAKING MONEY. That's the only reason they're in the game (no pun intended).
The comparison of DLC like this to combining the Gears Trilogy is also quite flawed. When you create a new character (or new costume, in Capcom's case), you create new art assets like modeling, textures and animations. Maybe hire a voice actor to do some grunts and yells. You don't even need to get the writer back, since as everyone mentioned, these characters don't fit into the story at all. When you make a sequel, the imporant difference is that you improve your tech. That's expected by gamers. Even for cash grabs like Call of Duty and Madden, we expect the engine to get marginally better each year. When you add a new character, the engine, the tech and all the real work (where budget and time is concerned) stays exactly the same. All you're doing is adding art assets.
Also, MonKENy, you realize that there is a lead time for DLC certification for PSN and XBox Live? From what I hear, it's quite long, too. Not quite as long as when a game goes from gold to print, but probably not as different from that as we may imagine. In all likelihood, early DLC is probably finished almost the same time the game is. No, developers didn't finish the game the night before it was released, but neither did DLC makers.
Apologies for the giant wall of text, but I continue to be upset that not only did we ourselves cause this when we paid for ridiculous things like Bethesda's horse armor and Capcom's alternate costumes, but that there are plenty of gamers defending behavior like this. No, it's absolutely not right, but it's also "just business," and as long as we continue to be willing to pay for it, companies will continue to do it.

Actually all the pre-order costumes and fatalities are in the krypt as unlockables. The pre-order bonuses are simply to unlock them from the start.
