This review makes me want to buy the game.
I mean, I've never gave any of the Yakuza games a chance because I'm not sure if I would like this type of game but after seeing so much positive stuff about it I feel stupid for not doing so. I am aren't I? lol

Maybe if I can rent it from Gamefly I'll give it a shot.

I'm really enjoying the game so far. Shun Akiyama is a great character! I am liking this better than part 3 so far.

Like this game was going to get a bad review!

But honestly, I'm hoping that Kenzan! hits our shores sometime. What I've watched on youtube, I'd really like to play that game.

I enjoyed Yakuza 3, these games are GTA-style HUGE and the third one immersed me for weeks - will pick this one up too for sure

I loved Yakuza 3, and I watched all the videos in the game to get me up to speed. If it wasn't for the fact that I have a little bit of a backlog I would have scooped this up day one, now I'll pick it up during the summer.

excellent game for an excellent series. I wish more games these days gave you the same bang for your buck as the Yakuza games. I put 32 hours into Yakuza 3, finished the story, did a TON of side stuff and still only had 21% of the game completed. 4 is more refined and even better.

Obviously in the minority here but I played the demo and was less than impressed. The fighting mechanics seemed too stiff and half the time my character was left kicking air. It reminded me in some ways of The Bouncer in that the fighting didn't appear to flow and was more in essence a timing exercise rather than rewarding you for pulling off moves. I appreciate that this is only one part of the game and it does sound very deep and rewarding for those that have played this and the previous one but for an immediate hook, it wasn't there for me.

Joystiq's eating all my posts today, so excuse the potential double post but: The fighting system is admittedly a little stiff and in need of revision. However, that demo was lazy and pretty much all-around horrible. I bought 4 because I loved 3 so much (and I'm very happy with it), but I would have never bothered if that demo was my introduction to the series.

Without having played neither Yakuza game I got the demo for Yakuza 3 when it first came out. I absolutely hated the demo, thought it was really stiff and poorly executed.
That was my mistake.
Only months later I managed to grab the game from a friend and after I started playing it I just fell in love with it. Got my platinum with around 100 hours of gameplay and it was pure joy.

When Yakuza 4 came out I decided to just check the demo, even though I would buy it anyway. Not to my surprise I found that demo shitty again, it is focused just on combat and to be honest that is nothing compared to everything else this game has to offer.
Now I've got my platinum in 4 with about 70 hours in and I enjoyed every single minute.

Hope we do get Kenzan sometime!!

...I looked for people that wanted to start sh!t and crushed their soul with a bicycle.

Then I found dude and had him make me electric nunchaku...I swear *one* of these days I'll get around to finishing the story.

I've playing been playing since the first one, and they have gotten considerably less janky as they go along. But you do need to be in a certain mindset for these games, and step out of your Western way of thinking a bit to enjoy them. It's hard to imagine starting into the series with 4, but I guess the improvements may make it worthwhile.

I loved both the second and the third, but I don't think they've changed it enough to buy this at a $50+ range. Maybe when it hits 20-30 i'll hop on

Yakuza 4 doesn't feel quite as epic as Yakuza 3, but it's still a pretty awesome game all the same and being able to play as more than Kiryu is nice. A greater variety of new environments would have been appreciated, though.

Happy you guys liked the game. Yakuza has always had its share of issues but the core mechanics are so solid and the amount of content so vast that if you are bothered, you have got to be pretty determined to not have fun. Plus, considering how each game has to fight tooth and nail for a spot on Western store shelves good press is much appreciated.

It's refreshing to see a Japanese game where the men actually look like Japanese men instead of Caucasian women.

@nikescar

I was having a conversation with someone about this just the other day. Not only are the characters "men" but the series often deals with the themes of masculinity, pride and integrity in a surprisingly deep and refreshing manner. It's somewhat unfortunate that everyone sees all of the hostess club stuff and doesn't see how intentionally stupid and self-aware it is in order to balance a lot of the drama. It's also unfortunate that Sega's translation often dumbs down much of the script in order to appear "harsh".

Either way, you don't get a lot of strong male figures like Kazuma Kiryu coming out of Japan these days (Solid Snake is the only other I can think of at the moment). It's certainly a nice change of pace.

I'm sure I'll pick this up once I've wrapped up the story of Yakuza 3, but I agree that this series needs to come forwards in quite a few respects.

It needs a heck of a lot more voice acting, more fluid animations, less of the static cutscenes, and some form of dialogue branching.

I'm sure there's probably more, but that would at least get its presentation up with modern day expectations. Surely the franchise makes enough money, after all?
