You should do like me and lower your expectations, so when you go to play it for the 1st time, it will be 5x more awesome than you first expected.
The last couple games i bought were just orgasmic.

True Story.

"a new enemy called a goliath rears its head"

The Goliath is nothing new. In Resistance 1, you commandeered a Stalker towards the end of the game and destroyed a Goliath before it was able to launch its crawler-laden spire into your allies as they made their way to the central tower; in Resistance 2, you destroyed one in the very beginning of the game when the chimeran forces began to swarm SRPA Station Igloo in an effort to free Daedalus.

Very true, you even get a trophy for destroying the first one in R2.

Let's just hope they bring back the weapon wheel from the first game - borrowed nicely from Ratchet and Clank :))
It seems Halo and CoD have convinced Insomniac Games that the two-weapon system is preferred.
Attention devs: if I was concerned about the realism of toting multiple weapons around, I probably wouldn't be playing a retro-futuristic, alternate-reality sci-fi game.

Me neither. I'm a big fan of Insomniac...in theory, but I always seem to get bored with their games about 3/4 of the way through (I think the 1st PS3 R&C is the only one I've ever finished.)

Yeah I've always loved the R&C games, but there's something about the Resistance series that just yells "mediocre" to me...They aren't really bad, but I've never been wowed by them and I've never had a ton of fun while playing them. Just pretty average games.

"but there's something about the Resistance series that just yells "mediocre" to me.."

They really aren't any more mediocre when compared to other heavily lauded FPS. If you set aside Halo's multiplayer component, Killzone's innovative rendering technologies, COD's use of set pieces, or Crysis's overall visual presentation, you've got fun but thoroughly mediocre and, dare I say, sometimes stupid games. Are they good? Most of them are, but they aren't exactly GOTY material; their plots are heavily derivative of existing works (Halo = Starhammer + Aliens + Starship Troopers, Killzone = WW2 in the 24th Century, etc.), they're filled with cliches, and their dialogue is often B-movie quality with comparable voice acting.

The only area the Resistance series is found wanting compared to its peers is advertising; the other games get millions of dollars worth of it thrown at people non-stop over several months while the Resistance games seem to go out the door without anyone really noticing.

well that is exactly what makes those games more than mediocre and honestly, even though i love the Resistance series, i can't think of anything other than the weapons that sets it apart and that's why the removal of the weapons wheel was so tragic in 2. again, i love the series, but in the mindshare of the masses, it's admittedly an afterthought. it's one of those games where i have to explain what it is a lot when i tell people i'm playing it. hopefully R3 pulls it all together and gets everyone's attention, and it's looking good so far.

I'd say Resistance's AI and the game's ability to throw 18+ enemies at any given time are also series hallmarks; most of the games' firefights were intense and the enemy AI was pretty good a either flushing you from cover or providing a withering barrage of fire that would kill you in a matter of moments. Compared to the Covenant, the Helghast, or unnamed mercenaries, I always found the Chimera to be worthy adversaries and was always impressed I wasn't fighting just 8 or so at any given moment.

Troll much?

I'm assuming you obviously have no ps3, and therefore shouldn't even feel the need to comment on this article... Yet you still did.

Both Resistance games are great and one wouldn't have to resort to metacritic to realize just how well received they are. The first has a rating of 86 based on 70 critic reviews, and the second has a rating of 87 based upon 79 reviews.

I'm just going to give you an example of the "halfway decent" 3rd and 1st person shooters the ps3 has.

Resistance series
Killzone series
Uncharted 2

I hated R2 passionately.

I hear though that the MP was good. hardly tried the co-op MP and didn't even touch the competitive MP.

Alot of people were pissed they removed the wheel, so I vaguely remember Insomniac mentioning the return of it in 3.

Why does everyone dislike R2? It did feel completely different than R:FOM but i didn't think it was a bad thing. If anything, R2 was too easy and could have used the weapon wheel - I missed that thing. The lady voicing over cut scenes took away from the story I thought. That mixed in w/ cut scenes more would have helped but I got a little bored with R:FOM where as w/ R2, I could play that Chicago level over and over again.
Either way, I'm still looking forward to part 3

Didn't dislike R2, but when all was said and done I thought R:FOM's single player was better. For me, much of had to do with the atmosphere of the first one; for some reason it felt like a WW2 / scifi mashup . The second one, not so much. R2 didn't give me that retro vibe.

That's what I loved about the live action R3 promo; sort of "Grapes of Wrath" meet "War of the Worlds".

You are right about the Chicago level. I'm a sucker for a 300' alien boss. Also, R2's co-op multiplayer is fantastic. I may just fire that up tonight.

i had a shit ton of fun with R:FoM's multiplayer. it seems like they are going back to the roots of the series while keeping the good stuff from R2 and i love it. R2 was not bad by any stretch but it did feel more generic. i can't wait to try R3, especially with the announced Move and Sharpshooter support (which i assumed it had anyway).

i'm not.
a lot of the competitive multiplayer battles, while good, were madhouses of confusion. going to a higher player count in a structered game like MAG makes a lot of sense. in resistance 2 , it felt unorganised.
i will miss the 8 player co-op though.

yes, now if only we can get the 'suck cannon' or 'rift inducer' included in R3 my life would be complete. i would love to watch chimera be sucked into a portable flying black hole. (no, not the one that calls some tenticaled beast in a dimentional portal)
