I put nearly 200 hours into the first Dissidia, and 15 into Prologus. I was able to tolerate only 10 of this before I returned it to Amazon.

@Perfidious Sinn A multitude of reasons bothered me that were purely opinion based, it just felt like a weaker game overall then the first one did. I'm sure many people find it to be perfectly great, it just didn't click like the first one did.

What!? Nooooo!

I transferred my Dissidia data to Duodecim. It is more or less the same, but I miss my overpowered Firion. Now he's just a little watered down. He was pretty uber / cheap in Dissidia though, so I can kind of understand. It's still a take it or leave it kind of game. I'll take, I probably just not play as long or as often.

Also, Duodecim's chase system is much more difficult. It's no longer a matter of simple reaction (or maybe I'm just too slow).

If there's anything my inner gamer needs, its a plotline. The game could have crappy graphics for all I care...just give me a plotline that wasn't written by Tara Gilespie.

@The Only Girl I agree completely, and sadly, the first Dissidia's plotline was such an over-pompous, brainless, meaningless piece of crap that it actually made the game much harder to enjoy.

The fighting in Dissidia was pretty fun to play now and then, for a bit, like passing the time for a few minutes while on the toilet, but once a battle ended and a cutscene began, it got so cringe-worthy that I really wanted to turn it off.

It's so sad because it's the polar opposite of Final Fantasy 7, 8, and 9, where the cutscenes and the plotline were clearly the most anticipated, engrossing, and amazing parts of the game.

+1 for people who enjoy the combat, -9,999,999,999 for gamers who enjoy the plot, characters, emotion, revelations, and intrigue of the story

No depth or longevity?

What on god's earth....

The original was full of too much stuff that even I, who has put around 150 hours into it since launch day, have yet to 100% it. And the sequel has more?

The original was also deep. Probably as deep as Pokemon with the sheer amount of customisation that ever just slightly affected stats, but enough to severely alter the output of the battle. I highly doubt they've taken stuff out of it so the sequel, with it's additional summons, items and characters are going to deepen the game.

Can't wait to pick up this game.

Never cared much for the stories. that's not why I play FIGHTING GAMES. I play for the FIGHTING.

I don't think he was talking about the depth of character customisation, but rather about the actual combat mechanics. Your comparison to Pokémon is telling, as Pokémon is not an action game, it is a pure RPG, and if Dissidia's gameplay is very similar to that, then it ought to scrap the action element entirely.

The RPG mechanics aren't what's important. That's not why I play FIGHTING games. I play for the FIGHTING.

"For one, the camera -- Square's arch-nemesis since time immemorial -- is easily confused by all the fast-moving action, and it quickly grows tiresome."

I think what you meant to say was, you easily get confused. Because cameras don't get "confused." It's really straight forward. You tap L once, and it locks onto your opponent. Tap it again and it will either disengage for free camera, or lock onto an EX Core or Assist Character. And you can equip skills that turn the EX/Assist lock on off if you want. And, you can equip skills that automatically lock onto those for you.

I mean, if you're right next to a wall, sometimes you can't really see for a second or two, but that's it.

@Xfire40 Well I'm not the only one.

" the camera -- Square's arch-nemesis since time immemorial"

I mean, where did that sentence come from? Almost all Square games didn't even have camera control. They were all static until FFXI and Kingdom Hearts. I just don't even know what he's talking about here. Is he saying Kingdom Hearts has a bad camera? Because that's the only thing I can even think of. Otherwise he's just totally pulling this out of thin air for no reason.

I think the biggest problem with Dissidia's story is new Final Fantasy writers making dialogue for old Final Fantasy characters. One has to wonder if they even played more than the first hour of these games. How else could be end up with a Terra who constantly freaks out about being mind-controlled (That thing that occurred at the very beginning of the game and is nowhere near her character's central conflict.)

reviews on fighting games are NEVER reliable. That's because no reviewer is competent enough to understand the fighting system. They then review the other stuff to the game and that's where the negative marks come from.

@chrisredfield31 that seems like a pretty asinine thing to say. Every game reviewer ever i just a bumbling idiot who can't possibly comprehend the the vast complexities of your genre? Geez, get over yourself. Maybe that's the problem, maybe fighting games get so wrapped up in their own bs they forget about being fun.

Has to be...I've found whenever there is a review that *really* goes left field on this site, its always by an unknown name (no offense).

In the end its only his opinion so its not like anyone has to listen to it....I'm gonna just add that I *strongly* advise people that read this to try the game and formulate your own.

I practically bought this game mostly because of LAGUNA. I played the first Dissidia and this one feels to me like a expansion pack really. Im not saying its a bad game though, I like to play it and I enjoy to fight with my most appreciated characters of the series.

Yeah, I'm not feeling this game too. I've played the first one and prologus and when I get to play Duodecim, it felt nothing. I'm not having fun and I'm bored. I spend about 200++ hours on the first one. As for this one, it gets repetitive. They just added characters and some non sense story into it. Hopefully, I get to finish Duodecim and get over it already.

How fitting for this review to be posted on April 1st as it has to be the biggest joke I've ever seen.

No depth or longevity? Show me another fighting game with a story mode that takes at least 30+ hours to finish before saying that Dissidia has no longevity.

If the 400 hours I poured into the first title is a show of its 'lack of longevity', then please keep me away from titles with REAL longevity. Nobody would ever see me again.

Anybody can make a story mode that is long, but if they can't even bother writing a story which my little brother could probably come up with, then what's the point in even playing through the whole thing?

Not to say that this is an absolutely awful game, but the reviewer was certainly not fooling around when he said this game could be much better.

@Citrus Cloud If your brother can really come up with a better story, then I'd like to see him try. Dissidia 012 has a full quest editor, where you can set your own dialogue, music and battles.

Freelance means newish, but mostly that he wouldn't be here making articles at all times to be a familiar name.

@Chronomaster You can assign 3 ground bravery attacks, 3 air bravery, 3 ground HP attacks, 3 air HP attacks. So that's 12. And you pick from a much larger list, equipping the attacks that you like. Then there's the chase battles, assists, EX Gauge and Ex Arts, and summons.

@Shinta The problem is, from a Square Enix fighter, I'm coming from Tobal and Ehrgeiz territory. Dissidia is highly underwhelming in that regard.

Sorry, but Dissidia lets me down as a Square Enix (dream) fighting game.

The story is awful, without a doubt. I can't speak for the Japanese voice acting, but most of the English voice acting is also terrible, being "okay" at its best. But really, since when did Street Fighter, King of Fighters, Marvel vs Capcom, or any mainstream fighting game have anything close to a "good story?" Dissidia's problem is it makes the choice to drag that terrible story element on and on and on until it's run into the ground. The actual fighting mechanics are great, though it does seem to suffer from some characters or strategies completely dominating other characters. Though once again, that's nothing new. The "Fox only, final destination, no item" joke about Smash Brothers Melee didn't come from thin air. The term Akumahax had nothing to do with Akuma hacking a computer, for sure. Almost every fighting game suffers from that, it's just since Dissidia's gameplay is typically so much longer, it just makes it more obvious. Get hit with a bunch of cheap moves in Street Fighter, you go down in a minute or two, get hit with a bunch of cheap moves in Dissidia and you can still wind up waiting through several minutes of getting hit by that same annoying bull before a character dies,. all the while wishing for the fight to end so you can pick someone else who's better fit for your opponent or reequip everything to counter it. I hate the grinding and the story, and my 3 other friends who play were already worn down from grinding in the first game, so we all just got the same hacked completed save file and worked from there. That pretty much solved my biggest problem. Here's all your equipment, all your accessories and summons, now make the character how you want to play and just go for it.

And while I'm not actually a Final Fantasy fan (but rather a fighter game fan) I have to admit that Square's fan service in the game is pretty top-tier. Model viewer? Check. Great musical score drawing from previous games? Check. Ability to listen to those songs whenever? Check. Player icons, aka classic sprites and portraits? Check. Short and sweet bio for all characters and summons? Check. For anyone who actually likes the story, there's a theater to watch all the cinemas from start to finish, which takes like 10 hours.

At the very least, you will be getting a fair share of content for a 30 dollar game, in comparison to say a new $60 game on a console which, while it might be a great game, the markets have made a bad habit of them being terribly short. Story modes under 10 hours, maybe 20 if it focuses on single player, but then once you're through you're through and there's not much replay value.

It's a pity the game doesn't have an infrastructure mode.
