Mark Rein: Unreal Development Kit 'eventually' coming to Android
15
Budding Android developers looking to utilize Epic's free Unreal Development Kit know it's still in the works for the platform. Of course, that's not to say the Unreal Engine itself isn't being used on Android -- Dungeon Defenders is perhaps the most visible Unreal Engine 3-powered game on the mobile OS, though a recent deal between Epic and Gameloft ensures that won't be the case for long. Companies can currently license UE3 code to develop Android games, though Epic VP Mark Rein told Gamasutra that "UDK is a totally different story."
"It'd be difficult for anybody right now to make a game with UDK and ship it on Android, because Unreal is for making high-end, high-quality-content games," Rein said, adding, "most of them are pretty large, because you can make a large game with it." Thus, Google's current 50mb limit for apps is kind of a problem, though it's one Epic and Google are looking to resolve.
"UDK will come eventually to Android, and Google is going to solve that problem," Rein assured. "We know they're working on it, but we don't know the release date and we don't know when it will get into the hands of all the different vendors with all the different phones."

I thought they said that UDK won't come to android because of the fragmentation.
I'm confused even though I like that they've apparently changed their minds.

Perhaps, but I just don't like Mark Rein in general as a hardcore Unreal fan since Classic. He's the biggest douchebag in the industry and just as bad in person. I remember hearing him speak one year at E3 (my first year attending I believe) and later that day he was on the floor... well after how he was treating passing fans it was hard to remain a fan of Epic when their VP/figure-head.
Probably why he got fired from id Software.

What he said is actually nonsense, google epic citadel android and you'll see that it does actually exist it just they wont release it because it'll make iphone look bad... I recon some money has changed hands here to keep unreal engine off android.

@Adriaaaaaan Yes, Epic Citadel exists, but not Infinity Blade. There's plenty of difference. The fact that Epic Citadel was a tech demo to show Unreal running on iOS is the key here, because that's exactly what it is on Android: a tech demo to show the middleware engine running on Android OS (and on high-spec'd hardware to boot).
Don't get your knickers in a twist spouting conspiracy theories. Dungeon Defenders, built with UDK, is already out on Android. More big games are coming. They aren't trying to keep Unreal off of Android, they just aren't updating UDK to officially output to Android - yet.

I don't think game size is going to be too much of a problem. Gun Bros has you download a decent-sized package after you've installed it.

Excuse me, what? Really? Dungeon Defenders is good, ok, but high end? With that much bugs?
God, "high-end" and "high-quality-content games" really fall on my concept now...

It's not like Android doesn't have other stores outside of the google market. AFAIK, that 50mb limit is a marketplace limit.
Not sure what Amazon or the other stores' limits are, but at least with Android, you're not beholden to just one company for your store.
I'm still expecting an eventual Steam Android app/store.
