Twisted Metal to darken the holiday season with Oct. 4 launch

Buried deep within the latest world exclusive trailer of Twisted Metal that aired during this week's GameTrailers TV episode was a launch date for the Eat Sleep Play-developed title: October 4. Unsurprisingly, the game will be tearing into retail outlets ahead of Halloween.

Additionally, the trailer is rife with the usual cast of vehicular homicidal maniacs. Marvel as Sweet Tooth corrupts a rural farm house simply by driving past it! Stare in disbelief as Axel pilots his physics-defying two-wheel death trap! And, ya know, there are some explosions too. Head past the break and see for yourself.

Looks great. I've been hankering for a new Twisted Metal since the PSP launch.

Though, despite Jaffe's insistence to the contrary, this looks a hell of a lot more like TM: Black than TM 2.

...and is it just me, or does Dollface/Darkside look like a 'roided-out transvestite?...

@Urethra Alfredo Yeah, I don't know how you'd think otherwise. It has the same overly dark atmosphere and feel. TM2 might have involved blowing shit up, but it was a pretty bright and colorful game in a lot of ways lol

Note to self: Holiday season now starts before Halloween. ...Wait, WTF?!

@gordogg24p to me the holiday season is from Halloween to valentines day. I dont like v-day but peoples seems to make a big deal out of it

Argh, dammit. Every time my desire for a PS3 gets put on the back burner, I see something like this and the itch starts all over again

@The Tim "Give in to the dark side. Let the hate flow." Or something like that. I was pumped for multiplayer alone on this at E3; that could potentially be the last ever multiplayer I ever play. Limitless potential for carnage.

For some reason, this is the trailer that reminds me: Twisted Metal used to be a -really- fun. But I'm not sure if we live in the era of couch co-op/competition anymore, and I don't think I would have enjoyed the original if I was playing with people out of "I can't believe you just did that" punch range.

So is Sweet Tooth a rapist/abuser? I'm not sure what I'm supposed to gather from that one scene of him and that girl.

I sucked horribly at Black, so I'm not sure what his story is at this point.

As far I can can remember, Sweet Tooth is just a psychotic murderer. I don't ever recall him being a rapist at any point in the timeline.

Yeah. That would be almost too dark, even for Twisted Metal.

Mad respect for actually showing gameplay. So few trailers seem to do that nowadays it seems. Game looks fantastic!!

That trailer was just alright, but I was already sold after the showing at E3. This should be a blast with friends!

When I started the video and they showed the cop car I didn't even notice that it was an advert until the Twix popped out of the dashboard.

Really? I thought the E3 was rather underwhelming. Didn't look as good as it does now imo.

This and God of War are the only games that make me secretly wish i had a ps3.

Uncharted 2 and LBP 1&2 are must haves, but you have to try them for yourself to understand why.

@MLS lbp was just not my thing. Uncharted was good too, but never made me want to buy the system. I gotta convince my buddy to get twisted metal, shouldn't be too hard...

same for me. Owned all the systems growing up but this gen its just been the 360 for me. But this game really could be a system seller for me.

Man I really loved Twisted Metal 4 and I'll admit I haven't played a TM since, but this could be sweet. The trailer had some interesting characters but to tell you the truth, I had no idea what was going on with that Chainsaw Massacre farmhouse thing... Was that Sweet Tooth domestically abusing some gal? Not cool.

I've never seen Sweet Tooth as anything but a Leatherface / William H Gacy horrible mass murderer character. He's the most iconic image of the franchise, so he gets slapped on the box; but that doesn't make him a protagonist.

You need to play TM Black. It'll give you an idea as to how the Twisted Metal universe has evolved and how gameplay has gotten even better over time.

Twisted Metal looks very cool... like a greatly improved and updated version of TM2. Not sure why the article reads "holiday season" though... what holiday are we talking about in October? Anyway, it will be a great horrortastic fun for Halloween time.

What's up with that last scene? Hope this game doesn't go where that scene's alluding. I'd hate to have to scratch an otherwise great game off my list for promoting/showing that BS.

I don't see the appeal of car combat. I've never played Twisted Metal, but car combat just sounds like it's not up my alley. Hopefully there will be a demo so at least I can try to see what it's all about.

Well, you're combining a lot of what makes an FPS fun, in terms of targeting and maneuvering and combat, with variable-stat characters. The Club is about the closest corollary I could offer; different characters were tougher/faster/stronger than others.

Arguably you could also look to class-based shooters, but there you tend to have really dramatic distortion in abilities and -role- between characters. A spy and an engineer and a solider are all meant to do very different things in TF2; Sweet Tooth and Darkside are both, essentially, expected to ram/shoot you while avoiding your bullets.

But when you consider that GoldenEye was---and remains---awesome despite having fundamentally identicall characters (and pre-Reach Halo as well) you can start to see how vehicle combat was pretty revolutionary back in the day. Here's hoping that the new one carries lessons from this generation.

yes a release date !!!!! I really can't wait for this .. i love Twisted metal ... was it just me or was anyone looking for Calypso ? maybe that was his laugh around the end of the game ..

Would love to play Minion and Dark Tooth again. haha. This game brings back old memorys of Twisted Metal 2. That game is awesome!

Twisted Metal: Head-On felt more like a proper sequel to TM 2 than anything other game in the series.

This is great but I'm kinda getting worried about 2012. Are there any exclusives announced to come out next year? The last guardian probably won't come out this year in the US but is there anything else aside from that?

I would be shocked if Final Fantasy XIII Versus managed to get out the door this year. If I was a betting man, my money would be on the first half of 2012.

Besides that, I'd wait for E3 2011. There's bound to be quite a few announcements of titles that will drop in 2012. Perhaps GTA V...

This is another fine excuse for me to get a new PS3 after my Fat system died.
