Super Meat Boy figures turn your desk into a deli
22
Etsy user Voxelous has revealed a set of four two-inch Super Meat Boy figurines, crafted using a 3D printer, super glue and love. You can grab one for $12 (plus shipping), though be careful -- Team Meat reports that upon receiving the toys in the mail, "we both crapped our pants."

There's a slight warning on this.
While I love the fact that the company seems to be ok with someone using their character's image, I hope they have some kind of agreement on this.
Trademarks, if not defended, will be lost. That's why there are so many lawsuits over copyrights and trademarks. If you have a trademark issued on something you did, and someone comes along later and uses it, and you don't stop them, then later cases you will lose because you didn't "defend the trademark."

And this changes what, exactly?
I think it's neat that they apparantly don't mind this, and I hope they have an agreement with the artist. But US law, if you don't defend your trademark, you lose it.
So let's say they don't have anything giving the artist permission. A few years down the road, someone does Super Meat Boy T-shirts or whatever with the designs. They make a ton of money, and the original creators take them to court. Court sees a few years prior they didn't defend their trademark when another artist used the designs, and they lose the case.

@mguniverse That's precisely the point. They're a small indie dev team with likely very little legal protection. Trademarks have no differentiation on size or scope. If they let an individual do small-time infringement here, then there's nothing to stop a large game company from just stealing the characters and using them in a larger project. As an indie dev team they would be mostly helpless against a mass army of lawyers from companies like EA.
I agree with Drakkenfyre, and just to really emphasis the point, Team Meat should have an agreement in place that legally allows such individuals to make products using the trademarked Meat Boy characters. If they say "Oh, we don't care, go ahead!" then they will be raped by a large game company down the road.

Well, at least the gamer public would be smart enough to know that "hey, Team Meat made this, not you people. Why are you claiming it as your IP?" And then the paper bags full of burning dog poop will decend upon doorsteps...

PFft. As if. People can't seem to tell the difference when different devs make games, such as CoD. The avergae person thinks the publisher makesthe game and basis everything solely off the publisher.

@FreakSheet are we talking about the same people that still think "The cake is a lie" is funny and who think the first Fallout game was Fallout 3?
I dunno, man.

@Drakkenfyre - Team Meat actively helped in approving the development of these toys. They have been told of what the creator has been doing every step of the way. As other series of models are released, all of the developers of those characters will also have been contacted prior to the models selling. (Voxelous is planning on making as many as he can, if not all of the playable characters in Super Meat Boy and Dr. Fetus. He also stated another character he was making but was not playable but I can't remember.)
@Mrblonde57 and @The Aquacharger - Yes Voxelous did run out of Meat Boy and Tofu Boy models rather quickly. In his defense this was like testing the water to make sure there was going to be a demand for the product. (Who wants to spend lots of money on something they can't sell?) Also, Tofu Boy was ordered in a very small quantity because he stands on a slight angle. The creator wanted to test out the toys ability to stand. There is no way to check if the models will stand as planned unless you order the prints and test for yourself. In the end it all worked out so I'm sure many more will be coming out in the next batch.
The next batch by the way should be in another 2-3 weeks. Unfortunately, it takes a while for the printing to be done but Voxelous will be much more prepared for the next round!

I completely understand the concern. My Husband has so much respect for the indie game developers and plans on making sure they approve of him producing the toys before the public is allowed to purchase them. I just didn't want anyone to get the idea that we are trying to steal their amazing work. They already don't get enough credit for all their hardwork!
