Minecraft's Update 1.5 looks to be one of the beefiest additions to the game to date, adding weather effects, a statistics page and a whole mess of achievements to the cuboid, world-building indie gem. Check out the video posted after the jump to see these new features in action!

I'm more excited for the piston mod update, whenever that is.

I've seen someone make an automatic TNT cannon, a hidden bookcase door, a bridge that automatically fixes itself, a vending machine that doesn't require immense knowledge of redstone logic gates, steps that pop out of a lava floor, and a staircase that you can retract.
This is just using a mod that isn't even officially supported. Just imagine all the capabilities once it gets widespread use.
This is an item that interacts with literally every block in the game. The implementation of the repeater was 'boring' but it allowed many new projects to be condensed and plausible.

I want a map with the ability to place markers so you can get back to your house.

Beds + Compass will accomplish that. However an in game map that develops as you explore with said pin feature would be very handy for other reasons.

Some kind of giant laser generator thing would be kinda useful. If they let you craft multicoloured ones you could dot them around the map, but give them much longer visibility (near infinite maybe, like what FUEL had) so you always knew where stuff was = so long that you're above ground.

@Heapey Warrior Theirs a "Minimap" thats available, works for 1.4_01 right now, with 1.5 on the horizon, well, don't update. Its on the MIneCraft Community Forums, under mods, heres the link:
http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=97332&p=1456935#ZansMini
And you need the mod Loader:
http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=80246
Open up the MC.Jar via a Archive program (WinZip, WinRAR, 7Zip work great) and drag and drop the files of the ModLoader, and the mod above, and your good to go. Anything else missed is covered by reading.

achievements seem to add a small sort of structure to the game, which is the best way to handle that sort of thing.

i imagine someone is going to make a joke about "getting wood" in the comments

Except.... That was the joke already, so making a joke about the joke would be stupid.

I'm sure when I first played Minecraft it was snowing ingame. I remember because the first thing I did was try out the 3D display option and it looked quite good with snow falling INFRONT OF MY FACE.

Yeah, before the Halloween 2010 update a world could be a "snow" world or a "temperate" world. The snow never stopped in the snow world, and there was never snow in the temperate worlds. With the edition of biomes we lost snow, but got several types of terrain. Now we have precipitation with the terrains, so biomes are a more complete feature of ALL worlds.

Universities should offer this game as a class. Hell it should be required for engineering majors.

@Balthier I meant as a physical element in the game. Setting trees on fire etc.

I wonder if you see the thunderstorm before you hear it depending on the distance...
Also, this is looking really good. I've been meaning to pick it up before any price increases, but I know it'd suck all the time away from my assignments

I don't think lightning will set anything on fire. Rain is supposed to remove fires, so I don't think any fires would be started. I would like to see lightning cause damage, though. I don't want my small wooden house to get destroyed on the first night, but knocking down a tree once in a while would be cool.

Hopefully we get an option to choose how frequently we want alternate weather conditions ie have it only rain some times. Being from Ireland, we get enough rain in real life without it being all the time in Minecraft.

So, am I the only one who saw a stat for "Distance Flown"? Hummm

Looks like achievements are being used also as an implicit tutorial of sorts, the "easy" ones being the basic things like getting wood and opening your menu. I do wonder what purpose it has for more experienced players, though. I doubt "kill 1000 pigs" is going to make me enjoy the game any more than I already do.

Stats: Distance Swum, Distance Dove? I know he's not English but...
I know the second one can be debated (I think Distance Dived would be better since Dove looks like...well, the spelling for the bird) but swum only comes after a verb and in this case Distance isn't a verb.
However the weather and achievements look good. Can't wait for this update. :)

I certainly hope that the weather doesn't change as frequently as we saw in that video.
