Portal 2 now pre-loading; Portal 2 stuff unlocking in Potato Sack games

The countdown to next week's release of Portal 2 continues and, in this day of digitally delivered games, there's no better sign that it's really happening than this: the pre-load. For those of you eager to return to Aperture Science and reacquaint yourselves with GLaDOS as soon as possible, buy the game on Steam and get that client downloaded.

Speaking of downloading things through Steam, if you purchased the Potato Sack bundle –remember, "13 hit indie games, 75% off"? – you can expect many of those to prompt you for an update. You see, Valve and those sneaky indie devs have been planting Portal 2 hints all over those games; today, things get a little more explicit.

Bit.Trip Beat (above) has a Portal 2-themed level, GLaDOS and all; Killing Floor (gallery below) has some Portal 2-themed environments; and The Ball has seven new "test chambers" featuring the "Edgeless Artifact Cube." Also updated: Wonderful End of the World, Cogs, Defense Grid, RUSH, AaAaAA!!! - A Reckless Disregard for Gravity, AudioSurf, Amnesia: The Dark Descent and Toki Tori. Pft, screw Portal 2. According to the source link I can start Pre-Loading Portal 3 today.

I didn't buy the sack bundle because I owned most of the games in it and wasn't terribly interested in the games that I didn't own. I wonder if I'll be getting those game updates as well.

Seems like it, killing floor just updated, and im pretty sure I saw others get updated as well. Now if only I still played most of those games...

I'm wondering if it's possible for me to run this game on my laptop (since my xbox just got e74 :( ) . I can run the first portal just fine on my crappy integrated graphics. I assume it's built on the source engine so it might be okay?

Should be, just turn all the graphics down. And be prepared for the game to load and/or crash.

yeah i used to use that website too, turns out it doesn't REALLY tell you the truth, it sort of just compares the minimum with your specs, but there are work arounds and other factors that the website can't calculate. it told me FO3 would not work for my laptop, when i said "F THAT" and just tried it, it worked fine with low settings and some mods.

In audiosurf when you select your song to play. You hear GLaDOS questioning your choice and redirects you to a song of her choice. It's a trance'ish song with voice clip from the first game. And you get to play it with a portal themed ship that can move blocks (orange and blue)

Yeah Audiosurf update is pretty awesome and song is pretty good too.

Hmm, part of me regrets preordering the PS3 version, even though I am *dying* to see the cross-compatibility. I'm expecting an early release for the PC version this weekend, and I'll be very sad to wait until next Tuesday =(

Amnesia's update appears to be the best so far. It's a separate game called "Justine", in which you are a captive woman who is led from challenge room to challenge room by a woman's recording, played through an old record player - a clear homage to the setup of Portal, but still very much Amnesia. Load it from the splash window when you start up Amnesia.

can someone tell me how Amnesia could be updated for this? it's way too serious of a game.... video please, anyone.

it is still set in the same world, time period, and style. It still features monsters and death and darkness. The only slightly lighthearted element is the way the woman in the recording sounds, but that is obviously because she's insane, so that in itself is also dark.

They upgraded a lot of tech stuff in Portal 2. Upgraded physics engine, higher res textures, more advanced lighting system, I'm assuming a much improved animation system going by how nice everything animates, and likely much more.

So, I was digging around in the pre-load files and discovered a document in the scripts folder titled "weapon_alyxgun"

As cool as that would be, I'm thinking it refers more to the character Alyx from Half-Life 2.

The Alyx Gun is from Half-Life 2, the one released way back in 2004. It's basically the model for the gun that Alyx uses--a pistol that burst fires. You can use it in Garry's Mod.

Just leftover files since it's still the Source engine. They keep the files, or at least references to them, because things could potentially break if they take them out.

Add [as-portal] to the end of any song file you play in audiosurf and see what happens.
