'SupaBoy' handheld lets you take SNES games on the go

Hyperkin, who sells third-party gaming accessories and various retro game devices (like the RetroN3, a combination NES/SNES/Genesis) announced its next product at the Midwest Gaming Classic last month: the SupaBoy, a portable SNES console that works with real SNES cartridges. It's shaped like a controller, but it also has two controller ports, so you can play while you play.

According to CVG's report on the device, it has a 3.5" screen, a rechargeable battery that runs for about five-and-a-half hours, and AV out for use on real TVs. It's due for launch in America this summer. It might look a bit silly with the huge cartridge sticking out, but Sega got away with pretty much the same thing. Officially.

Sega may have done it too, but at least this thing has five hours of battery vs the nomad's 8 AA's with a 90 minute charge.

I thought the Sega Nomad was awesome despite its power hogging issues.

This would be cool is I couldn't play SNES on several other devices in my home. ...besides an actual SNES.

I was at Midwest Gaming Classic, I didn't happen to see this thing.

It may look silly but EVERYONE will be jealous if they see you playing that on the bus.

If you're playing that on the bus, you probably ride 'the short bus'...Not that there's anything wrong with that.

I said this elsewhere, but if this thing doesn't support games that use software chip enhancements (StarFox, Yoshi's Island, Super Mario RPG et. al), then it's no different from any of the other SNES clones out there.

Are you sure about that? That would mean this thing doesn't have actual shrinked down SNES hardware, but instead is just another "SNES on a chip". Bummer.

or I can have all those same games without the cumbersome package, not to mention the cost of carts on an Android phone

Still would rather have those Gamecube portables people make. Wind Waker, Paper Mario TTYD, and SSB Melee on the go, anyone? If they manage to make a Wii portable, consider my life savings GONE just so I can take Brawl with me everywhere :P FALCOWN PAWNCH!!! In the Car! On a Train! In the middle of a Major test at school! That'd be AWESOME.

I sold all my SNES cartridges many many years ago to buy a Playstation.

Too bad its probably going to be SNES-on-a-chip aka not much better than emulation.

Sure, nothing beats the good 'ol SNES console. But still, emulator is the best way to play SNES especially if you prefer the mobile platform or portability - PSP, DS, GP2X, etc.

It plays full size cartridges? No thanks. Not my idea of "portable".

Are we still in 2011? cause this is like 20 years late. The best SNES games have allready been remade for DS, so not really that big of a deal; IMHO.

From what I have been reading, this does support the software for the chip enhancements. Even Noah's Ark was stated to work in one interview I read.
