Rumors of a "Wii 2" or "Wii HD" have been flying since ... well, pretty much since the Wii launched, but when an outlet the size of Game Informer piles on, it's tough not to take notice.
The publication says it's hearing from multiple sources that Nintendo will announce a new home console at or before E3. According to hearsay, the console would arrive in 2012 and would sport HD graphics, though GI's sources are conflicted about how said graphics would compare to the Xbox 360 and PS3.
Well, there goes our "Schedule Vacations for E3 Week When All The Video Game Journalist Resorts Are Super Empty" plan.
Update: IGN found some anonymous sources of its own, who claim that the new console will be backwards compatible with all Wii games. Its sources say that the console is "significantly more powerful than the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360."

Not to hate on the wii, but it really doesnt feel right that its lifespan is already ending. In the nearly five years it has been out it has received a fraction of the use I got out of my 360.
The majority of the time I spent on the wii was with rehashes like RE4, and super mario strikers. Even Twilight Princess wasn't really a Wii game.
I think I'm sticking to Nintendo handhelds from now on

Actually if you follow Nintendo's release history, this is par for the course.
NES: 1985
SNES: 1991
N64: 1996
GC: 2001
Roughly 5-6 years between each console.

When was the last console that had a truly stellar launch lineup? Wii's was one of the best in a while, if we look at what the last generation had (handhelds and consoles and including 3DS)
3DS: Pilotwings, Nintendogs/Cats, Steel Diver, SSFIV3D
DS: Super Mario 64 DS, and that's pretty much it
PSP: i forget, but it wasn't spectacular (i want to say Wipeout Pure?)
Wii: Wii Sports, Red Steel, Twilight Princess
360: Perfect Dark Zero, Call of Duty 2
PS3: Resistance, Genji
Point being, a Nintendo console at this point is the best bet for a good launch lineup, though not by much.

@NaeemTHM The only problem with that is the 5-year console cycle is dead. Thank God it's dead!
Prematurely cutting the life of a console is what did the Dreamcast in after Saturn was abruptly stopped 4 years in its lifetime.
It was never normal, NaeemTHM. The only reason this stupid 5-year tradition got started was because of new competitors entering the videogame scene & old incumbents trying to upstage these upstagers or reclaim lost ground.
In reality, your chart should go:
Famicom: July 1983-November 1990 = 7 1/3 years before Super Famicom
NES: October 1985-August 1991 = 5 5/6 years before SNES
Super Famicom: November 1990-June 1996 = 5 7/12 years before N64
SNES: August 1991-September 1996 = 5 1/12 years before N64
N64 (Japan): June 1996-September 2001 = 5 1/4 years before Gamecube
N64 (U.S.): September 1996-November 2001 = 5 1/6 years before Gamecube
Gamecube (Japan): September 2001-December 2006 = 5 1/4 years before Wii
Gamecube (Japan): November 2001-November 2006 = 5 years before Wii.
Wii (Japan): December 2006-???
Wii (U.S.): November 2006-???
Nintendo was reluctant to move from Famicom/NES to Super Famicom/SNES. Only competition forced their hand & continued competition created those rough 5-year cycles.
But what real competition does Nintendo have on the home console front? Yeah, the 360 is on a tear right now but it's only in America. Microsoft spent an arm & a leg to get that kind of momentum & Nintendo just coasts by on Wii. Yet Wii keeps up pretty good for a console mostly neglected by its maker.
The 360 for all of its momentum could not beat the Wii in 2010 neither for the holiday season nor the year. Wii still has a lot of life left in it, Nintendo just has to get off their butt & get it out.
This is not the typical generation. It's going long this time. There are no new competitors entering on the home console front & all players are sticking to the ones that brought them to the dance. Nintendo would be foolish to try to launch now. It's short-sighted.

Uh, no. The Dreamcast died because Sega barely advertised it after launch, and almost none of the developers advertised their games. This, combined with the upcoming PS2 launch stealing alot of attention away from Sega led to poor sales, and combined with Sega having three failed consoles/addons in a row prior (Sega Saturn, Sega CD, Sega 32X) Sega just tossed the towel in.
It was not killed off because it reached it's 5-year lifespan. Hell, it didn't even get to 3/4 of it.

@Brodo It'll be six years between release of the Wii and the "Wii 2" which is plenty for a Ninty console as already been said. It has gotten far more support than the cube or N64 did. It's casual games and cube hardware have held it back in the minds of many, but it will wind up with 100+ million sold this year and that's a successful run. Most people often forget that despite better hardcore games and HD visuals that MS and Sony compete for #2. Nintendo won this round

Also, they should call it the Revolution HD or "REVO" for short (esp. since they effed up the prior console's name)...

SBU HD is 480P, and you are wrong most games on PS3 run on 720P.
HD is anything above 480P, which is highest output that DVD supports.

Alright, I'll say sub-720p then.
And while I'm well aware that most PS3 releases run at at least 720p, I was talking about major releases across both consoles.
CoD games. GTAIV and its expansions. Red Dead Redemption on PS3. Halo 3 and Halo Reach. Crysis 2. etc. Several PS3 games, like Wipeout HD and S/SFIV, also down-rez on the fly during certain sequences to handle whatever might be going on onscreen.

Games like Halo 3? Resolution is 1152x640, or 640p. Halo Reach, 1152x720, short of true 720p at 1280x720.
These games are upscaled to display at 720p, but their actual resolution isn't there. Those are two I remembered quickly, but this is the case for most games this generation. The only system playing games in actual 1080p 90% of the time is PC.

ugh i hope they dont announce a wii2 at e3, its just too soon.
if they decide to release wii2 say..holidays 2012 i feel they would be putting themselves at risk of getting dreamcast-ed out of the market.
i feel like if they release it too soon, sony and microsoft will continue there plans to drag out this current gen into 2014 or 2015. doing so making the wii2 seem to be in an awkward half gen slot, like the dreamcast got stuck in [having the majority of its multiplatform titles shared with ps1 and n64]
then when the PS4 and Xbox>9000 roll around with whatever supercrazyspecs arms-race they'll indefinitely get into, the wii2 will have to have some crazygroundbreakinginnovative gameplay hook going for it to stay relevant.
not to mention, as weve seen before sony is not afraid at all to blatantly copy whatever innovation nintendo comes up with [Playstation Move aka PSwii] and an extra 2 years development is a long time to get that carbon copy action going on.
orrrr maybe im just crazy..

I have been waiting for this for a long time... no way is it too early! A little late I would say.
But you know what? I really think this is going to be a huge "In your face!" to Microsoft and Sony. Whilst they scurry to capture the motion control market, I have a feeling Nintendo is going to dial it back a bit with controllers more suited for waggle-free gaming (motion controls/gyros/etc. will still be included. But less of a focus). They have now captured a new, massive market, and are ready to take them to the next level.
Hardcore is coming back in full swing! Nintendo style.

@Gun Barrier The PS2 did/does have a year lifespan. When they say that, they don't mean 10 years between consoles, they mean that they will fully support the console for 10 or more years. They can release a new console and still support the old one.

And I'm not bias. I'll be selling my Move here in a few weeks. It works VERY well, but it made me realize why I fell out of love with motion controls to begin with. It can be as good as it gets, but I simply don't feel like I'm swinging a sword unless there's something to stop it when I hit something.
Personally, I wish Nintendo would go back to traditional controllers. Give me a new regular pad and an HD F-Zero or Starfox and I'd line up day one!

You know what else is flailing, throwing your arms up while jumping up and down 20 times until the move works in Sports Champions.
