Is the first one any good? I played the demo...I like strong narrative, but it didn't seem like that was the focus. Maybe atmosphere is? My PC ran it on med-low (Core 2 Duo, 9800GT and 3GB RAM). Is that indicative of how the final version will run?

I'm pretty sure the narrative was the focus...which was really good in my opinion.

I can't wait for a sequel. The first one was really good, with a bunch of small flaws throughout. With a bigger budget, and the same mix of heavy atmosphere, with a good narrative then this game can really rise into a goty candidate.

Yes, it'll run pretty much the same as the demo.

And yes, narrative is a huge focus. I haven't played through the whole thing yet but I did read the book (which was quite good) and my friend assures me the game had much of the same atmosphere.

Great story, good gameplay mixed with a few weird quirks and annoyances. It's a game that you'll know if you like it pretty much as soon as you play it.

You should be able to run it on High settings with a 9800GT and Core 2 Duo no problem so long as you turn off AA and make sure your services are trimmed down.

Is it just me, or is there a giant ad on the covering the background of Joystiq's title page?

Apparently a game called "World of Tanks" splooged all over Joystiq.

I mean, I'd investigate further, but the goddamned game is called "World of Tanks."

Seriously. "World of Tanks?"

If the people who made the game didn't care enough to provide their game with an actual title, then why should I care enough to check it out?

Unless it's, like, a golf game, or something. And the title is some kind of hipster-cool attempt at irony. Because, you know, there aren't any tanks.

Kind of like that movie "Funny People."

Metro 2033 is Super Beautiful!! The narrative is amazing, the voice acting is amazing (Play it on Russian, English Subs), the atmosphere is top notch, and the graphics? The Graphics are Best of the Best and really puts you into the moment. And With Tessellation? Everything looks so awesome!

Can't wait to see what they do with Last Light.

Metro was a pleasant surprise to me when I played it this January. really great atmosphere. enjoyed messing around with filters and thought the whole "wasteland" bit was better and more oppressive than Fallout 3's. It had a lot of flaws, but not enough to keep me from completing it.

PS: The Librarians are terrifying

If sequels of games that I love have taught me anything, it's to expect the next iteration to be dumbed downed and more casual; minus half life 2.

Metro 2033 could be dumbed down immensely. Take out the balancing of filters, damaged masks, remove ammo as a currency, take out ranger mode.
There were many things that made Metro 2033 a little more hardcore than the average COD clone shooter we see these days.

@akeso Removing pointless stuff != dumbing down. You could substitute almost anything for the currency (plenty of shooters have currency systems) and the filters really didn't add that much considering how easy they were to come across.

thats generally the rule but dont forget the occasional exception like uncharted, assassins creed, the wrath of khan, etc. lets hold out hope for a sequel on par with the original

You shouldn't be as worried about a Metro 2033 sequel being dumbed down since 4A was founded by ex-GSC Game World employees; there's a lot of STALKER in Metro 2033 and I doubt 4A would monkey around with those mechanics too much. Most of the complaints I've heard and read from Xbox 360 and PC players alike stems from the amount of damage inflicted by your weaponry; it can take quite a bit of ammunition to drop some of the more common mutants (mostly the Nosalis) and enemy NPCs. If 4A were to add just slightly more punch to the guns, they'd have a pretty flawless survival game.

Oh, shit. But then you'd have Myst.

And only Mensa members play Myst.

Whoa. Total paradox, right there.

One of the things that made Metro harder was that your bullets were your currency. Should I buy this new gun, or should I save my limited ammo? Not that there was a currency system

@The Aquacharger It artificially inflates the difficulty the same way making enemies bullet sponges does. It doesn't really add anything to the gameplay.

I can agree with you on that one, but the removal of it would make the game quite a bit easier.

This is a ridiculous question I know, but what designates it as an "artificial" increase, and not a meaningful one? I thought it was one that was reasonably grounded given the condition of the metro tunnels.

I'm of the opinion that the Ranger Mode DLC actually improved the game quite a bit. While the enemies weren't bullet sponges in those modes, neither were they pushovers, with human enemies becoming very deadly once you realized that ammo was much more scarce.

What the ammo system certainly did, especially on "ranger mode" was to make you seriously consider your ammo options before every fight. Instead of normally just running into battle screaming you would have to find every advantage possible to conserve ammo: from silent kills to an initial salvo of reusable ammo. Every time I lost a hellsing arrow due to a careless shot, I would have to agonizingly search a room or simply move on and pray I had enough ammo for the next fight; that didn't just make the game harder, it made it deeper and more immersive. Frankly, it was that sense which made Metro 2033 so much fun. I honestly do feel there is a risk of seeing that removed because some publisher believes it would streamline or mainstream the game.

But I'll probably end up getting whatever version is better...should I get the PC or 360 copy?
