But...Why? Why couldn't they just make a sequel to Prey that focused on what made it a good game and actually continue the story with Tommy?

Not saying the game won't be good or bad, but the fact that it's so different is very off-putting...

This looks more like Mass Effect than Prey. It looks ok, but why even call it Prey? They took out nearly every feature that made prey unique.

What about people who thought Mirror's Edge was a great game, but found Blade Runner to be an overrated pretentious pile of crap?

I have to agree with the above... looks nice, but it's disappointing that they took such a huge, possibly 180° degree turn from what made PREY so fun to play and enjoy storyline-wise. Hell, for me personally, it was the TUROK sequel I wished their developers had made.

I can't wait for Mirror's Edge 2.

It looks promising, but they took out parkour.

And it's not in first-person, anymore.

In fact, there's no jump button in it.

And it takes place in a series of underground caves. With lots of puzzles.

It's slower paced than the first game. Much slower-paced. Glacial, even.

Oh, and the Asian chick with the star on her face? Yeah, that bitch is gone. You play as P.P. Apeface, a talking gorilla. Who is also a private investigator. With a penchant for three-piece suits.

Even though DICE is playing fast and loose with the term "sequel," Mirror's Edge 2 looks very promising.

I still wonder why at all they are calling this Prey, but despite not having the cool stuff Prey had, it still sounds pretty promising. I'm all for any games that can pull off a fun, effective parkour movement style. Mirror's edge was great, so it's good to see its spirit lives on.

At first I was skeptical about this when I first heard it announced, but now I'm definitely keeping an eye on this one. An open world, alien noire story-driven shooter certainly seems as ambitious a design choice as the first Prey.

Everybody's asking why call it Prey 2? Who cares - if the developer wants to expand that universe in a totally different way, more power to them. Besides, if they just made a direct sequel with all those same quirky elements, most people would probably say "Pfff, I played this game five years ago, why do I need to play it again?"

@lowlife121 What do you mean who cares? The whole point of putting a 2, or even making a sequel or prequel in a series is to make it somewhat like the first game and/or expand upon the narrative of the original story. This game has absolutely nothing to do with the first Prey game. It's like making a Metal Gear Solid game with no cut scenes, no Solid Snake, no back story, and no continuation of the story at all. Makes no sense. Prey was a good game. It was fun, interactive, and had cool elements like portals, gravity, out of body experiences, warped size perspectives, driveable alien craft... This is nothing like the first game. You can't sell a game to someone saying it is a sequel to another game you have played and make it something completely different to where you have to check whether you are playing the right game. I'm disappointed in this only because it has nothing to do with the first game. "Prey 2" might be good for what it is, but then why call it Prey 2? It's hard to imagine this being like Mirror's Edge. Might as well have called the game Super Mario Alien Edition... Oh, it has nothing to do with Super Mario? Who cares...

@lowlife121 I've come to the realization that people are going to bitch no matter what the news is. Like you said, if they announced the sequel was nearly identical to the first one, people would be like "WTF, we already played that, How about something new" And now, since the developers are going in a completely different direction it's, "OMG why is it called Prey 2, it's nothing like the first one." For me, I'm glad they're taking out some of the elements from the first one. All those reverse gravity things in Prey made me sick, I was never able to finish the game.

@zamardii12 But it is set in the same universe and apparently you'll see Tommy from the original at some point - so it does expand the story of the series, just from a different perspective. Maybe the developers thought Tommy's story was finished (it truly was if you finished the game) and felt that they've done all they could creatively - with the story and with the portal/gravity tech - so why not venture into different territory?

I'll admit Prey 2 is misleading, maybe calling it Prey: with a subtitle would be better, but people are getting way too upset about this topic that their rage is blinding to the fact that the game looks cool and unique.

@lowlife121 The real reason is: Nobody remembers the story or even the ending of Prey. I played, loved and finished Prey and I really don't remember anything except the initial scene in the bar. But then maybe that is me, because from my end, The Darkness was a game about watching a movie with your girlfriend ;)

Looks interesting, but like the other posters said why call it Prey 2? It's not like Prey was a massive title, they'd be better branding it under its own franchise as alot of people might be put off if they've not played the first one.

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I didn't like the first Prey very much, it just felt to janky to me. I do appreciate what that game tried to do however, and understand why a lot of people liked it.

With that said I am significantly more interested in this game now, good article and I hope Human Head can pull off a well put together and fun experience.

I'd just like to point out that the majority of the features/mechanics (minus the parkour and cover) they're touting for this game have been done in countless games, even in a game that's 11 years old, Deus Ex.

Open World? Check.
Player-driven missions/choices? Check.
Gadget upgrades (nano-augment) and upgradeable weapons? Check.

Unless they plan on focusing on the parkour, it sounds like I played this game 11 years ago (minus the alien setting/story), not counting the endless amount of similar games in between then and now. At least Prey did things unique and not done X times over already.

It could be a great game and I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people enjoy it, but I'm worried about how entertaining a game can be that contains 10-year old mechanics that have been repeated for the past 10 years.

These thoughts aren't exclusive to Prey, by the way. This is my opinion on about 99% of FPS games.

Oh, and calling it Prey 2? Unless they actually pick up from where Tommy left off and continue the story (which no one knows if they will at this point), it's pretty clear they're just riding a name that is somewhat-known to lure in people (like me!) who enjoyed Prey, considering they've stated what made Prey it's own game is now gone...Which is somewhat insulting to those who actually enjoyed those aspects of Prey and were looking forward to continuing where they left off in the story (again, like me!).

I'm interested in this game -- my experience with Prey recently proved to be not very rewarding. It's not a bad game, it's just the visuals aren't very good (too dark and the aliens blend into the background too easily). Hopefully, this 'sequel' will be better.

Maybe the connection to the first one is one of the bounties Killian hunts is Tommy and reintroduces some of the other characters from the first one.

Bounty hunter, huh?
Man, I want the HD release of Stranger's Wrath so bad, I can't help but imagine that Prey2 could possibly implement some version of "live ammo".
Like some little alien parasite that has electric shock and can be loaded into a slingshot for stealthy non-fatal takedowns...
This game sounds like it has potential for serious good times.

So basically this reads like "Yeah, we had this awesome alien bounty-hunter game, but we couldn't sell it. So then Bob in Marketting remembered that we were sitting on the rights for this thing called Prey. All we had to change was the opening titles and the credits! Bonuses for all the executives, yay!"

Seems a lot of negative sentiment revolves around the games namesake. "Why is it a sequel to a game that it shares almost nothing with?"

Doesn't seem like a legitimate concern for me, sometimes a game needs to evolve, sometimes a universe (i.e. Prey) wont have stories that follow the same characters for chapter after chapter after chapter, slapping in extended character family born of relationships with best friends who are equally as legendary as their parents (i.e. Star Wars).

Tommy was dry, consider the way the first game went, and ended, what's he gonna do? Mope about his girlfriend, get angsty and, save earth again? Hell no, more like "discover alien peyote, hang out with deceased friends and family in the spirit world, be awesome off screen".

Sometimes, an Alastair Reynolds style fiction-verse is best told with small unrelated stories instead of a single god character involved in, and winning, everything. (i.e. most games with sequels)

Prey was one of the few games with a different protagonist, yeah he was kinda annoying with his constant whining for his girl, but he was unique.

This generic US marine has joined the ranks of buzzcut heroes.
Why kill the hope of a true Prey sequel by calling this Prey 2...why not just call it "Marine in Space" and leave the Prey IP alone.

Here's why I hate sequential sequels..
Everything about this article makes it seem like they would've done much better without the Prey franchise name.
Especially if it's so different. Why no call it Prey: (some witty subtitle)

I'm so sick of every IP coming out with 2-15 like Call of Duty or some cheesy horror franchise. Games are totally epic and deserve more then an arbitrary sequencal number at the end of the title!
