Portal 1 has sold four million, excluding Steam sales
29
With an auspicious beginning at the Independent Games Festival Student Showcase in 2006, a small game -- named Narbacular Drop -- from a group of DigiPen students went on to inspire an industry darling. Several oft-quoted lines of dialog and millions of "The cake is a lie" jokes later, Portal was a resounding critical success when it launched inside The Orange Box, also home to Half-Life 2, its two follow-ups, and Team Fortress 2.
You knew about the acclaim, but you may not have known that it has moved approximately four million copies in the past four years. What's really surprising, however, is that Valve reached that sales mark without including the numbers for Steam -- numbers that would muddle the accuracy of that four million in terms of actual sales, given that Valve has offered the game free through Steam at various times.
It's also unclear whether that number includes individual copies of Portal sold at retail, the Xbox Live Arcade release (Portal: Still Alive), or any other sales channels. We've reached out to Valve for clarity on the total sales of Portal, but for now, four million is nothing to sneeze at -- especially considering the game's humble origins.

Indie darling comes good.
Portal was more or less just another Source mod thrown into the Orange box to add bulk where TF2 and HL2 were the big sells of the box.
Or have I misinterpreted Valve completely?
Either way, amazing game (as if you needed told).

@mrmobius I could be completely wrong on this, but I always thought that the original portal was at one time a tech demo for the portal gun that was going to appear in Episode 3 (the Borealis being an Aperture boat and all). Even if that were true at one point it likely is no longer the case given the wild popularity of Portal, maybe even forcing Valve to redesign parts of Ep3, more delays.

Portal was never a tech demo. The original game was Narbacular Drop, which was a game done by students. Valve saw it, liked it, and decided to do a game based on it, hiring the students.
They gave it a different story. With one exception (portals in portals) the portals work the same as they did in the original game.

@Drakkenfyre It played like a tech demo though, with little in terms of story or length.
What it had was golden though, and I think it really did change how they were going to do HL3/episode 3.

Steam tracks how any game came into your Steam account (through retail, steam purchase or for free) in your purchase history, so Valve would be able to track who actually purchased a copy of the game (and I'm sure it would jump another few million).

From an experiment bundled with HF2s on Orange Box to a huge success on its own.
Jackpot, Valve.

@(Unverified) it would if it wasn't also a downloadable title. Portal was never a massive success as a download but I am sure it should well into the tens of thousands.

I wonder how many times Portal was downloaded during the FREE week

Preface: I didn't really play the first Portal game that much at all. Maybe a few times at my brothers house if at all.
Question: How am I supposed to be approaching the puzzles? I don't really understand what I'm supposed to do or what I'm really seeing. I just kind of do random portals (I played for the first time this morning for about an hour) until I get into the elevator thing. I know thats not going to work as I get further and firther into the experience.
Is there some kind of online FAQ I'm unaware of (I searched but my keywords didn't get a good match) that explains the gist of it? The game just kind of threw me in the middle of everything. The game itself is really awesome so far but I just feel kind of helpless and lost.
Any help is appreciated.

That's about all you can do until you start to figure out a system. It's hard to give tips without simply telling you how to complete the levels, which kind of takes all the fun out of the game. Once you start piecing together the combinations you need to accomplish tasks, it'll all start making sense.

@Brian & Gordog
Thanks for the reply fellas. I guess its one of those games you immerse yourself in until you figure out what works. It's just kind of confusing. It's like you make these portals that portal you back into the same room and you can see yourself going through the various portals through a looking glass. It's such a mindf**k! It kind of reminds me of Echochrome on PSN in terms of the fact I feel helpless and lost. But, I eventually started to understand even some of the harder puzzles in that game as well.

Excluding Steam, it's remarkable that this number is any higher than 0.

Your history is a wee bit off Ben. Narbacular Drop was made in 2005 as the groups thesis project, which are shown off to developers during the career fair at the end of the semester to try and get them notice. Robin Walker, of TF2 fame, was at the fair that year and saw the game, called up Gabe Newell to come done and check it out, and the group was offered jobs for the moment they graduated.
Minor nitpicks, but year was wrong, and IGF had nothing to do with it. I mostly mention it because I actually got accepted to DigiPen next semester, and know of some of their success stories.
