Why do people seem to be so hyped up about Left 4 Dead Episode 3? I'd honestly rather have Half Life 2: Episode 3.

Help me out. I played portal 1 to a point, to me it was a tech demo and not a game. Was the latter part of the game with a story and purpose? What did I miss? I read these reviews and it seems like a longer tech demo you can play with a friend.

Where do you draw the line between tech demo and game?

Seeing as both portal games are full-voiced, look beautiful, and have an interesting story that ties in with another large franchise, I'd say it's out of the tech demo category. Not to mention the number of satisfied critics and gamers.

Good review Justin. My friend picked this up the other day, he wants me to come over and play it. Currently, I'm addicted to the Gears 3 beta, but I'll probably play some Coop with him tonight.

Couldn't agree more (actually, I'd probably be harsher on the narrative aspects, but still). Portal 2 is very polished and well-designed, but I didn't NEED more Portal. Portal 1 was perfect, and yes, the concept could be expanded, but after everything about it got turned into a meme it was hard to remember just how good it was. Portal 2 is tired; it is still brilliant, but it is tired.

@Aerothorn I agree.

Portal 1 was the right length, especially since it lacked more of the story/character elements that 2 introduced.

I don't think I would of wanted to play 12-15 hours worth of Portal 1, the pacing would of been too drawn out.

Portal 2 had a bit more to work with, in terms of story/atmosphere/characters, so they had freedom to extend the gameplay, but not too much, considering there is still only so much you can do with a puzzle game.

I personally liked Portal 2 more, as had more of a "this is an actual game" feel to it. You got to traverse Aperture Science, learn of its history, and have engaging character plotlines the whole way. It also ended at the right pacing, and didn't feel drawn out either.

don't need more Portal? the only thing i could think of when i finished the first one was how i need more Portal. now that i finished the second its all i can think about.

hopefully Valve opens it to the community so we can get more, player created test chambers. thats all i really want. more testing.

Interesting. I thought Portal 1 was too short. Well, too short for the game. I do think you are right that it was the perfect length for the story. Honestly, I have never been horribly impressed with Valve's stories. Valve's strength has always been the journey, not the destination. Much like Lost, they can tell a story, but can't finish it to save their lives.

However, I was a little resentful that Portal 1's story arc (or lack thereof) forced the game to an abrupt conclusion. Just as the portal challenges were really getting fun, the game ends! I mean, heck, the first half (or more?) of the game I couldn't even both portal colors. I am and will be happy to simply have more portal puzzles to solve.

The inclusion of a substantial coop "game" makes me giddy with anticipation for the day when I will actually have time to play :(

But story? Meh. I do appreciate the cuteness and creativity they put into it, because they certainly could have done a lot worse. They did a good job. An above average job. But it's not the most amazing cast or concept ever. And as far as evil AI's go, SHODAN has (under threat of death) ensured there will be no room in my heart for another.

The original Portal had the Challenges and Advanced chambers, though. The only thing Portal 2 has that would make you want to keep playing is the Co-Op mode (which I'm yet to try out). I really was kind of disappointed that there aren't any other singleplayer offerings other than the story mode. None of my friends that are online right now own the game, so there's nothing to do other than developer commentary.

i love system shock so much. i can't remember a game that scared me as much as system shock 2 did. a lot of people talk about how dead space is the scariest game ever and blah blah blah, but i still don't think it holds a candle to how i felt when walking around the space facility in system shock 2. and when you finally come face to face with shodan...most memorable moment of gaming ever right there...

thats exactly what i was thinking. i was pretty surprised when there were no additional or advanced maps in Portal 2. i haven't tried co-op yet either. i really hope its not just another linear experience like the single player and is over once you complete it once. i want more maps. i want to be able to come back to this game repeatedly for new experiences. not replay the same thing over and over.

@kojo87 - I played a little bit of co-op earlier, and it seems to be a little side story. Without spoiling the main campaign for anyone, I think it is safe to say that one could play Portal 2's main campaign and be just fine, without needing to play the co-op campaign. They wouldn't be missing much by not doing so.

There isn't much replayability with a Portal game. Once you know the puzzles, the length is pretty much halved, and the mystery is kind of gone. There are a few easter eggs to find, but nothing worth going back and playing the entire game again for.

@Mr Period

I don't get why everyone keeps saying that that's the Borealis...

It looks like an empty Drydock with some life rafts with "Borealis" written on them.

And seeing as "apparently" (not my words, just the rumors I hear) Portal 2 is set "300 years" after Portal 1 and the events of Half Life 2 the Drydock idea is more plausible. Despite the hint at possible time travel being a side effect of going through portals.

well, you kinda answered yourself at the "It looks like an empty Drydock with some life rafts with "Borealis" written on them." part. There are two big ass ships too.

As for the rest of your comment, is part spot on and part speculation (wich is great also), but adds to my opinion of portal 2 hinting, and therefore linking the story to HL3/ep3

@(Unverified) - The Borealis was rumored to have disappeared completely from its dry dock. Combine that with a dry dock, with life rafts reading Borealis, and you've got an obvious link to Half-Life 2/3.

*Spoilers for Portal 2 incoming*
*Seriously, don't go on*
*Stop it*

My real question at this point is whether or not we'll see Chell in Half-Life 3, or even if the events of Portal 2 are long after the situation with the Combine is completely over (it's at least a hundred years later, after all).

My favorite part of Portal 2 (having just beaten the single player campaign last night) is the story. It's nice when a game rewards you for exploring, and Portal 2 does that in spades with the story of Chell and her Mother (who I'm assuming is Caroline; Why else would GlaDos have let Chell go, other than because Caroline was influencing her?). Long after the puzzles are gone from my brain, the story of a poor little girl that was forced into slavery essentially (during take your daughter to work day!), by the computer that likely killed her mother (while simultaneously BEING her mother potentially) will remain.

I also love the progression of Aperture Science. First they used Astronauts and War Heroes. Next they used the homeless, and finally they used employees. Things just keep getting more deranged as well, starting with Cave Johnson warning of minor maladies, and finishing with "taking you apart, and putting you back together, while getting rid of your tumors" and "your blood may be made completely of oil".

I loved the game. Well worth $60, much less the $35 I paid.

My two cents:

I had more fun in this sequel, as Valve really made this more of a game, than a puzzle game. You got more exposure to areas that felt more like a facility than the first, where you were basically always in a test room... or the less exciting backroads inside of walls.

Portal 2 also had more interesting scripting when you transitioned to other areas. Cave Johnson narrative, collapsing hallways/rooms, engaging periodically with characters and characters engaging other characters.

When valve said Portal 1 was a test bed, and Portal 2 was the actual game, I can see what they meant when that was mentioned.

@(Unverified) I'm pretty sure the only reason this didn't get a 5 out of 5 was because Justin had to plow through this in one sitting for review. I feel really bad for him because he did himself a disservice.

When I hit that wall of thinking, "Okay, that's enough Portal for now", I put it down and went to sleep. The entire next day, I couldn't stop thinking about what was going on in Portal-land and it was the first thing I did when I got home. After a few more hours I beat it, and I couldn't be more happy with it.

You need to pace yourself. You make the crush/love analogy, but if you were to spend 12 hours straight with the new girl no matter how amazing she was, she'd seem a lot less special than she would after just a few hours.

You've gotta give yourself time to pine. That's when affection grows. :)
