Yeah, no.

6.2" touchscreen controllers? Are these rumor mills insane? I think it's even worse that gaming sites don't have the ability to distinguish between a plausible rumor and just batshit insanity.

@PointlessPuppies IGN has confirmed alot of these reports with various developers. So it might not be 6.2 inches but it does have a screen and does stream content from the console to the controller.

I'm not dismissing the screen, I'm dismissing the ridiculous 6.2" size. Anybody should be able to see that number and just shake their head in disbelief. It's disheartening to see Joystiq/Kotaku posting it anyway because, well, I don't know. More page hits?

You're assuming the screen will have a normal aspect ratio.

The screen could be the size of a wii remote. It's about 6" diagonally.

So, it's quite possible, if unexpected.

I thought the DS' dual screens were a gimmick (It still is for the most part, very few exceptions worth playing in the end) but it was still wildly successful.

So, since I know Nintendo prototypes their stuff to hell and back, it's quite likely they found an appealing, new and different controller.

Or, it could just be an accessory. Either way, 6.2 does seem large, but if you make it a long, short screen, it isn't totally unrealistic.

Looks a lot like a Gamecube controller with a LCD screen in the middle.

Announced! Wii 2 is 1 Gamecube sawed in half, with a screen stuck in the middle, and welded back together! The Wii 2 is therefore 1/2 a Wii!

Maybe it's the PC gamer in me but I don't like like symmetry in my thumbsticks. I'm used to my fingers doing different strokes for different folks. Two thumbs down feels like they're getting the way of each other.

Anyway for me when it comes to Nintendo, peripheral is a four letter word. They're ingenious in marketing and first party games but they've always sucked when it comes to peripherals and 3rd party support. Personally I'm waiting for that track record to reset before I get excited about anything my past console obsession is doing.

And before you it that reply button let me list off some things

peripheral
Powerpad
Lightgun
Powerglove
Rob
VirtuaBoy (technically a console but no support)
The N64 Controller (I still blame them for my hand cramps)
The Memory expansion
The Wii remote's ability to produce any core gams
the Wii remote plus
Wii Speak
That gun piece they introduced with a tease for a Zelda game.............

And as for 3rd party support, well don't make me break out the links of how the big N treats third party developers past and present. Like how they introduced a Star Wars game and then introduced the Wii remote plus, blindsiding Lucas Arts developers that would have loved using the tech. Or the numerous other instances that Nintendo has treated 3rd party developers in a hostile manner for making money off of their console.

The point is Nintendo is a corporation looking out for #1 just like MS and Sony it's just they're practices........well they suck most of the time. Would MS and Sony do the same thing in theire shoes, hell yes and sometimes do. I'm done backing a rich mans horse. Prove to me you are catering to me and I will sign on the dotted line but till then Nintendo has burned too many bridges for me to get excited about anything they are doing.

I am having trouble believing the images of the new controller myself. It just seems that the screen is too big, and the shape design is a back peddle for them. Honestly, this appears more like some gamers’ dream controller more than what would be reasonable to produce in mass and sell for a fair price to consumers.

I would love for controller to go back back to having 6 face buttons as well.

@DokiDokiBawanga - I hope it won't be resistive. There really isn't any reason to use one, because there wouldn't be a stylus to use with it (resistive being better for stylus use, if memory serves).

If it's centimeters, then it would be too small. Also, I doubt that every gaming and tech news site made that same mistake.

Hopefully, the 6.2" was a prototype and it was changed to 4.2" later on, but the rumors are not reflecting that for some reason.

assuming there is some validity to this rumor, it doesn't necessarily follow that the controller would be so expensive as guessed in this article... if the controller has a 6.2" screen, but no 'brains' of its own (no cpu/gpu as in a ds or kindle or ipad sense)... if it is just a shell that receives info via the game console itself and the screen is of similar resolution to a ds screen, then i think this controller can be manufactured at a price as reasonable as the old dreamcast / vmu controller was.

There is no way with a touchscreen and camera could they make them as cheap as the Dreamcast controller.

The controller was standard, it had nothing special about it except it had two VMU slots, and could accept a VMU. It retailed for $30.

Adding in everything that's been rumored, it cannot be made as cheap as that one was, being nothing but plastic and a circuit board.

agreed that some essential computational components would be required in said rumored controller, that is why i specifically noted that it wouldn't require cpu/gpu in the same sense that a portable device like a ds or ipad would... it would need some essential elements for sure, but no where near as much as a stand alone device that functions on its own and by itself would.

i kindly disagree. knowing that the raw components of say, the 3ds, are just a hare over $100 and that this controller likely won't have any substantial/stand-alone brains of its own... nor would its screen likely to be as sharp as the top 3d screen of the 3ds (800x320 i believe) and its camera would likely be of a resolution of a 3 yr old cell phone camera... it could conceiveably be mass produced at a very reasonable price.

Look up reviews of other games. See how almost all of them contain the criticism "touchscreen controls just aren't responsive. They suck."

If you are doing something like adjusting angles, fine. But actual active controls, no, they don't work as well.

As long as the game premise and the interface are simple, touch screen gaming works wonderfully. That's why I used Angry Birds as an example.
