That's the same feel I got from the demo. I know the obvious comparison to this game is Split/Second, and i think that they nailed the controls for this type of game.

The physics for this game is what makes me avoid buying it.

@Rankore

Yeah, but you were rewarded for it and got points and cool replays of your crashes.

When it happens in this game, you lose the race. The idea is to not crash, but to finish first. So in a game like that, crashing is not fun.

I'm a huge fan of Pacific Rift but I didn't like the Apocalypse demo. The controls felt off, and the track layout, in spite of the apocalyptic destruction, felt very stale compared to Raingod Spire, Sugar Rush etc

The game is sweet as can be. Collision with the scenery is just about being a crap driver, same went for Pacific Rift and Motorstorm before it.

If you can't handle the heat, get out of the driving seat Joystiq!

@DigitalEmporer I hear ya - I have no doubt that (just like many games before it) I'll play Motorstorm Apocalypse and wonder whether Joystiq were actually playing this game when they wrote the review. I thought the demo was great. This review is another indicator of Joystiq being on the slide (almost finished the SOCOM 4 single-player campaign - I'm not sure Joystiq even played it before writing their review.....)

Yeah, you gotta take these reviews with a spoonful of salt.
Joystiq is great for a gaming news blog, but when it comes to reviews, they don't really offer an exhaustive analysis that gamers need.
Then again, there are plenty of game review sites out there to tailor to what any of us may want to read to reinforce our preconceived notions...
;)
But, yeah, go to GameInformer if you want to read more than a couple paragraphs about a game you're considering.

Hmmm.

I dunno'. The idea of Motorstorm wrapped in a post-apocalyptic package is simply too appealing to me.

I suppose I'll GameFly it first, but I wouldn't be surprised if I ended up picking this one up.

Wow this joystiq review kinda sucks while the ign review(I Hate em so much) was actually good for once, talking in-depth about all the features, gameplay and even the 3D aspect. IGN gave it 8.0 while Joystiq gave it 3 out of 5. Seems like Joystiq is becoming a version of 2001-2004 X-Play(when G4 actually had video game shows) where they gave a bunch of games 2 or 3 stars out of 5 and every once in a while they would give a 4 or 5 if they felt like it lol.

Isn't this one of the titles that fanboys are always putting on their lists whenever there is a list war? So when a title gets 3 stars does it officially get off the list, or will it still be included?

@leobebes No, same goes for KZ3 and Socom 4. Both got medicore reviews on this site and a couple others but overall I enjoyed both. I don't let reviews decide if a game is good or not. From the demo and gameplay videos I have to say MSA is shaping up real nice and I already have it payed off. List wars are BS as well because they are just opinions. I don't care if this and Socom4+KZ3 got 1 star. I still would include them in my list of games I like. There are games in lists that I disagree with over all platforms(PC,360,PS3 etc.)

Ok, so I hate to be 'That Guy', but I don't agree with this review at all. This game came out over a month ago in Australia, and I've finished the single player, and played tons of the multiplayer. I'm not saying that Motorstorm Apocalypse deserves 5 stars, but having played the game, I just don't agree with the text. The game plays great and wows at every turn. The controls vary depending on the surface you are on (asphalt, dirt, water), with the bikes very hard to control in water. So, don't drive the bikes over water, and they control just fine.

"There's a racing festival / battle being held in an earthquake-ravaged costal city (hence the title's delay following the real-life quake devastation in Japan) and it's drawn the attention of newbie racer Mash (that's you!). You'll guide the upstart through a series of races designed to highlight the specific strengths of different vehicles (cars, trucks, bikes, quads) on varying terrain, before it all opens up and lets you choose the best vehicle for each job."

Also, Mash is only the character for the rookie missions, you play as Tyler when playing Pro and Big Dog when playing Veteran. Also, at no point during the festival do you get to choose the vehicle to use, you always have a vehicle class assigned for each race.

Also, to people comparing it to split/second, it is nothing like split/second cause you have no control over the environmental hazards. Also, refer to the comment about different surfaces. I found split/second boring in comparison to this game.

I really feel like this is a very incomplete review of what truly is an outstanding game.

Socom killzone gt5 have all been great games they spent maybe 20 mins playing and write their review, now its apparent they are knocking points for their own lack of skill, stay classy joystiq!

agree 100%, they are so COD biased that they dont realise that they are being tunes to a specific kind of controls... happens almost everywhere. There are much better games out there and just because the reviewer finds it a little out of his/her league - they shudnt trash it..
Played the Demo of this game - "pure racing fun with its twists" is how i will put it.

So wait, this game has no standout features?

Splitscreen 4-way where few modern racers have none isn't standout?

Splitscreen with online play at the same time isn't standout?!

A perks system that only exists in shooters (but first for a racer) isn't standout?!

I love Joystiq, but their reviews are constantly doodie. Just pure doodie. They always fail to mention serious features that could be interesting/actually worthwhile and usually just complain about how much they sucked at the game, typically due to one feature (in this case handling) that they disliked.

Guess what guys? You're reviewing games for a job. Other people like to put time in to actually get good at and learn games for fun, while you're trying to blow through them as quickly as possible to post a review. Maybe your dislike is arising from the fact that you're having trouble separating the fact that it's work from your objective judgment?

The game is pure fun. I already finished it and enjoyed each race. You don't crash that much if you're a good driver and memorize the tracks, and not only finish them getting the cards is so challenging.
The game itself is far better than demo btw. It's full of epicness and the cutscenes of the story mode add a nice touch.

Multiplayer allows two PSN accounts to be signed in at once, locally, and play online. That's rare for a PS3 game. You should've mentioned that.

Also, colliding with the scenery is what happens when you're new to the game, you've gotta learn the track, the whole adrenaline rush comes from avoiding these obstacles in the track and the ones that are thrown at you. If it was smooth sailing what would be the point? Then you're just playing, I dunno, Ridge Racer?

"The game also seems to have problems determining who's in which place from time to time (for example, I'd blow past 3rd place and still be 4th)"

if it works anything like pacific rift, its cause there is multiple racing paths and someone else is ahead of you on a different path that you can't see. Many people might make this mistake, but a review shouldn't and should actually inform people that it isn't a problem and rather a feature.

I haven't played the game though, so it could actually be a problem, but it seems unlike that it wouldn't work like there last game.

Seriously, this is terrible, for all the reasons pointed out in this thread. On multiplayer:

> There aren't any real standout features to elevate it beyond a back-of-the-box bullet point.

Yet it has splitscreen online (PSN or guest), way simpler "join from friendslist" partying than previous games in the series, COD-style perks, and a *betting* system that makes it fun to play even if you can't win any races (you can bet on a rival and as long as you beat him, it doesn't matter if you come 1st, 8th or 15th - this is a *massive* innovation for a racing game).

And not a word about the *epic* vehicle customisation? Come. On.
