GREE, arguably the largest social media company in Japan, has cut a check for $104 million to acquire mobile games (think iOS and Android) platform OpenFeint. The goal is to "build a global ecosystem of distribution channels for game developers" through the combined efforts of the two companies, both of which have told Develop that OpenFeint's brand and CEO will remain intact following the completion of the purchase.
OpenFeint currently touts a user base of 75 million across Android and iOS, and even saw a huge spike in new users and OpenFeint-compatible game downloads over the Christmas holiday. Along with GREE's 25 million users in Japan, the two will have access to nearly 100 million people. And yes, we did that math all on our own.

Hopefully it's doing well on Android, since I think Gamecenter took a lot of wind out of its sails in iOSland. It has some extra features, but Gamecenter has ubiquity on its side.

@sigma8 Even before Game Center, I never thought OpenFeint was convenient to use. Especially when you want to compete with friends on leaderboards and such or even add people to your friends list it just was impractical.

I don't know where your Gamefly or Shacknews comments are coming from. This is the Gamecenter I was talking about:

Wait a second. How is 75,000,000+25,000,000 nearly 100,000,000? I think it would BE 100,000,000. Unless you forgot some numbers Joystiq?
Which leads me to this quote from a witch, "Nearly headless? How can you be nearly headless?"

Wow. So some people out there focused a few years of their lives on making obnoxious green pop-ups for some of my cell phone games, and now they're walking away with a cool $104 million.
See, this is why I'll never be rich.

I'm sure the news here is that OpenFeint was worth $104M.
WTF?
WTF?

@PR0F3TA Well NGMOCO sold for 400 million recently. These iOS related companies are making crazy money and Japan wants in on that new money well.

Oh, that spam that ruins a bunch of otherwise fun games that I've deleted because it keeps trying to shove itself down my throat. Yeah, seems like something I'd spend a hundred million on..
