PSN devs offer mixed reactions to cost of outage
86
As consumers scramble to deal with the ramifications (identity theft!) of the PlayStation Network breach and subsequent outage, PSN developers are struggling with anxieties of their own.
"PSN being out definitely affects our bottom line," Q-Games Dylan Cuthbert told IndustryGamers, "but as long as the people who were going to be playing Shooter 2 and other PixelJunk titles will get right back in there playing them when it comes back up, we'll be happy and hopefully income won't be dented too much." That could prove to be a big "but" -- Cuthbert's comments came before we knew PSN users' personal information had been stolen and consumer trust in Sony perhaps irrevocably damaged.
Speaking to Develop, a UK-based developer, wishing to remain anonymous, observed that "people will be a bit more wary about using their credit card on PSN, so obviously we're nervous about sales."
"There may be a lot of people who won't want to spend their money through PlayStation Network now," the same developer added. "We're expecting a 5–10 percent drop in business." The dev estimated that the studio has already lost "thousands" in expected revenue.
And just imagine the stress levels of studios crippled by the unfortunate timing of being scheduled to launch their games on PSN over the past two weeks. While Ubisoft has declined to comment on the outage's anticipated effect on its downloadable title Outland (which missed its scheduled launch on PSN yesterday, but is available on Xbox Live Arcade today), we can assume the company will survive. But what about a mini developer?
"Sony will be helping us retain key focus for an extra few weeks as they understand how something like this can affect a small dev studio like ours," Open Emotion's Paddy Murphy told IGN, suggesting that the studio's Minis title, Mad Blocker Alpha (pictured), which launched last Tuesday just before Sony shut down PSN, would receive some extra promotional placement when the PlayStation Store is back online. "As long as they can give us some marketing assistance when the PSN is back up, we are sure we will be able to recoup our potential losses." Like Cuthbert, Murphy was speaking before the full extent of the PSN attack and data breach was known.
"It's hard to gauge how many customers will defect because of this," industry analyst Michael Pachter told Joystiq, "but my guess is not very many." Stewart Gilray of Just Add Water shared a similar sort of optimism about the PSN incident. "Actually, we're not worried in the slightest about this," the Gravity Crash developer said to us. "Yes it's a PITA, but it happens all the time." He recalled the Xbox Live outage back in late 2007 and last year's Halo: Reach leak "due to similar problems" (though neither resulted in the theft of users' personal information).
"Our belief is that whilst this is terrible news," added Gilray, "that it won't affect the userbase too much." Either way, the incident has perhaps exposed an unforeseen risk in developing for the digital marketplace -- at least, in developing for a single digital market. While indie studios have flourished in recent years through the rise of downloadable game platforms, those dependent on PSN for their very livelihoods are suddenly in a tight spot. What responsibility does Sony have to help them through it?
"We're certainly hoping we'll get something back from Sony," the anonymous UK developer pined. "Perhaps they'll cut their royalties a little bit for a short period, to make up for the losses."

Exactly, and Nintendo are speeding towards this same BS by not allowing consumers to use Nintendo Point cards on their 3DS.
You think people who didn't trust SONY with their CCs will so with Ninty?

Stockpile no, I wouldnt call owning 2-3 stockpiling.
And, if you notice all the other comments here, they are all rushing to buy point cards for PSN.
It was either buy 4 at the time or risk the PCards shortage in 2008. Nintendo should at least set a deadline to redeem them at the 3DS store.

Owning 2-3 is stock pilling.
The whole point on them is to buy them so that you can redeem them to buy content of the marketplace, not buy them so they sit around in your house.

@Trilancer Even if I agreed that was stockpiling, let's say I was given three cards as a present. At some point it's ridiculous of a company telling me that this form of money isn't equally valid on another one of their products. There's really no defense for it. There is absolutely nothing about the 3DS that makes it require its own card system.
Apple doesn't make me buy special iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch cards. PSN doesn't make me buy special cards for videos, music, PS3 or PSP.

I also find pre-paid cards to be a lot safer, but where I live they have to be imported, which comes at a very hefty price (I'm talking about double/triple the price).
Buying on-line was a way for me to buy games at normal prices, instead of the absurd price importers charge here. This breach is a huge problem for people here, since I can no longer trust the PSN security system and can't afford imported cards.
For now I'll be focusing my game on PC, buying mostly through Steam. If hackers manage to get into it too, hell, I'll play with my Neo Geo or something, then.

You are not safe. With or without a credit card number, they have all your personal information and can open a new one for you.
This nonsense about purchasing paranoia is just the smokescreen of ignorance of the real danger.
There's really nothing you can do about this except get a credit report in a month or so and see if there's any debt on there you don't recognize. I've had friends get their identity stolen before, it's definitely a real problem.

So let me get this straight, you have the most basic of info potentially stolen and people are freaking out. Yet the Top 10 apps on Facebook were caught selling ALL the same personal info (not sure about the CC) plus all your social contacts and habits and that didn't/doesn't bother you?
I get so confused by people.. One day they are okay with sharing all their personal info and the next they are worried about identify theft. If it was really a concern for you, you should have known better. It's no longer 2002 people... Protecting yourself online should be automatic for you by now or you shouldn't even care... ignorance at this point in time is a terrible argument.

Really? Sony somehow obtained my social security number without my knowledge and stored it on their servers? If all you needed was your basic info to open a new credit card then no one would be safe, PSN user or not.

I thought this originally too, but unfortunately thanks to the greed of banks like BofA, you don't necessarily need a social security card anymore to open a new credit card. According to something I read it had something to do with wanting to "expand into the hispanic market" :\
Regardless, it's not the end of the world guys, it's simple. Use PSN cards from now on, and just monitor your credit card online now and then, which you should be doing anyways. A credit report maybe a month from now isn't a bad idea either. Luckily, we live in an environment today where it's very easy for banks and credit card companies to overturn/reverse any fraudulent charges... this happened to a friend of mine over the weekend whose card was randomly used by some idiot to make 3 Xbox Live accounts.

I normally used the prepaid cards before so that shouldn't change. But I may end up slightly more likely to use my CC info online once it's back up.... Ok your giving me a weird look let me explain. Because of this breach sony is having to Completely restructure their network system and they are doing so with the help of outside security firms. I have no doubt that once the system is back up it will be much more secure than it was before. Oh and the Pixel Junks guys need not worry I was planning on picking up Shooter 2 when I finished with portal 2. So I'll send them some revenue when the stores back up

@baby sea tuna Kratos is actually pretty cool in the game. The bigger point for me though was that I just don't care for the d-pad on the 360 controller. I suppose that I could just get an arcade stick for the 360, but I don't really want one of those things taking up space in my tiny apartment.

It's not really going to change anything with me. However, I am going to remove my CC after each purchase or perhaps all together and migrate to points cards. I haven't really lost and trust or loyalty to them but a lot of that will depend on how I'm compensated for the ordeal.

But you are a huge supporter of Sony, no? It's the more 'casual' PS3 owner that might be more wary of using the network after this. I will just use prepaid cards from here on out, as others have mentioned, and be sure to never have my credit card information stored. I can understand a lot of people feeling like they might just not want to even touch it again though.

I can only speak to my own intentions. As I said, a lot will depend on my compensation. Getting a new debit card cost me $10 and I'm out a week (so far) of my DC Universe subscription. So, I want to see what bones I get thrown my way before I decide how much my confidence in then has deteriorated.
Honestly, I think this is going to blow over assuming they get the network back up for online soon. There is a lot of squawking and noise being made but I don't see it having a major impact on even casual users and thier purchasing habits. You have a vocal minority of people online that are upset but a huge amount of users either haven't noticed or don't care.

I was wondering about DC Universe players. That sucks and I would really hope that they compensate you for an equal amount of time that you weren't able to access the game, at the very least.
Like the entertainment industry, I too think that once the servers are back up and everything is confirmed to be secure, it will blow over and people will forget about it all. I think a lot of noise is coming from two different camps. People either don't really know what's actually going on and just think that their credit card info has been leaked and then there are those complaining just for the sake of it, or just to crap on Sony for something.

Lost sales? Yes! 5% to 10%? No, probably more in the coming weeks, but around 20% would be a good estimate. Those numbers are way too optimistic.
Sony will have to work REALLY hard to regain the players trust. Also, if they released information related to the intrusive hacker, I'm pretty sure that irrated gamers would gladly find a way to express they views... with baseball bats!

I think Sony is underestimating impulse buys, however; you can nearly as easily buy PSN cards off Amazon via "download" ( http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=amb_link_355738082_5?ie=UTF8&node=468642&hidden-keywords=B004RMK4BC|B004RMK4P8&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=auto-sparkle&pf_rd_r=0W92M515PQTMFVS364C8&pf_rd_t=301&pf_rd_p=1292263502&pf_rd_i=psn ) and you get e-mailed the code just about as soon as you proceed to checkout, so maybe it won't be as big of a drop-off as I would presume...

I'm pretty sure that the day this is back up, all info will be wiped clean, they'll prompt you to re-enter your information. I think that would be best, just purge the system of all the data stored, everyone gets a fresh start (its like Project Mayhem!), they can decide to link a card again and trust Sony, or just go to Best Buy and buy $10, $20, $50 increments..

OK, but watch out if you end up having a good week. It's PSN users who have their debit cards linked that are reporting the first wave of fraudulent activity:

This all just stinks so much. Here we were, wondering if we could keep our PSN games when we buy a PS4, but instead we have to worry if we can keep our money in our bank accounts.

Boy, Sony royally screwed up big time. Hopefully, everything turns out to be better than what it is now. I hope no PSN users got screwed up and I hope the indie devs don't suffer too much with this "Blackout".
I'm not taking up for Sony but crap like this does happen and coulda happen to anybody but Sony is gonna have a lot of heat on themselves for this for a long time. Especially w/ the NGP releasing whenever it will, people will always remember this.
I'm a proud PS3 owner and always will be but from now on, my new address will be"420 Smokers Street".

I'm quite sure Sony will send out an email when it comes back up reassuring all the customers that the system is ACTUALLY secure for purchases, and give us a token of their gratitude for our patience and continued use of the Playstation Store.
PR Problem solved.
