Rumor: Ocarina of Time 3D to see limited initial release
119
Japanese retail news blog Sinobi (translated by Andriasang) reports Nintendo has a somewhat surprising supply strategy for its upcoming, three-dimensional remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. According to the blog, Nintendo's initial shipment of the title to retailers will be "extremely small." Furthermore, Nintendo supposedly isn't letting retailers order extra units of the game, and is allotting a limited number of copies for all retailers, regardless of their respective size.
It seems bananas to limit supply on the 3DS' most anticipated title to date, but Sinobi suggests this could be a reaction to the overstocking of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, which ended up in Japanese bargain bins faster than the franchise is likely used to. If that's the case, then Nintendo is forgetting one very important factor: Spirit Tracks is a pretty okay game, while Ocarina of Time is the best game ever made.

This is a dumb idea. Rumour or not, this is your system seller, Nintendo, ship at least 3 million copies or people will be dissapointed.

It's totally the system seller. If I had a nickel for every time I heard someone say "I'm holding out on a 3DS until Ocarina of Time is released," then I'd have enough money to actually buy a 3DS myself.
Which I'm holding out for.
Until Ocarina of Time is released.
It's a sad day when a scary, orange Italian monster-muppet from New Jersey can state the obvious, but Nintendo themselves seem to be clueless.

People who don't know who Link is does not mean people don't know what the Legend of Zelda is. I know people who've been playing since before OoT and don't know who the hell Link is. They think his name is Zelda or that he doesn't have a name.

Not to give joystiq crap for this, but this is PURELY FOR JAPAN. Zelda has never been as strong of a series there as it is in the west. Nintendo is doing this in japan after what happened with spirit tracks, where only 2 months-ish after release, you could find spirit tracks for the equivalent of roughly $5.
Except a standard launch for the game in the west. Joystiq just didn't read very closely :P

Yeah I'm pretty sure having a limited release of your handhelds most anticipated title is pretty dumb. You also have to keep in mind that Spirit Tracks game out when the DS had been out for years and already had a great library. 3DS owners are starving for games. People who don't own a 3DS are waiting for this game.
A limited release would be a terrible idea.

Also one should note that Spirit Tracks was a very weak game (as was Phantom Hourglass).
OoT on the other hand is a game that people already love. With the extra content Nintendo puts into the 3DS version they really can't mess this up except they make the controls really awful which I don't expect.

Dumb rumour. This is going to be the 3DS' first big release. There's no way it's getting a "limited initial release." That would be like if they had printed only a few copies of Super Mario World.

Really?? Best game ever made? Sure OoT was outstanding for its time but even back then it wasn't the best game ever made. It's the best Zelda game ever made maybe but not even close to best game ever made.

So my opinion is dumb sh*t and yours is superior. Get bent idiot. I'm entitled to my opinion, which is obviously contradictory to yours.
"Unless you're completely clueless, it is a well known fact in the gaming industry that OoT is one of the best titles of all time. "
A fact is established by the wealth of empirical data that supports an assessment. What empirical data can YOU provide to make such a claim? A games rating is a reviewer's opinion therefor any statement regarding a game's quality is based on opinion.
I understand that OoT was the darling of the industry back in 1998 because I was in college and I played it on the N64. It was vastly over-rated back then and it's even more over-rated today.

@Victoryismine52: I'm not sure why everyone is burying my comments and projecting false assumptions on me. I find it absolutely astonishing that anyone would call Zelda OoT "the best game ever" but that's just my opinion. Given the tone of the comments towards my original post I'm finding it difficult to believe that any of you are actually old enough to have played OoT when it was released.
According to the masses, Avatar is "the best science fiction film ever" when in reality, it's just a (very poorly contrived) ripoff of Dances With Wolves [in space]. OoT is a great game in it's own right but it's certainly not worthy of a title as distinguished as 'Best Game Ever'

@thund3rstruck There are no 'masses' who think Avatar is the best movie of all time, or even the best 'science fiction movie' as you claim. However there are lists upon lists of best videogames of all time, OoT is ALWAYS in the top 5 and very often it's #1. I would say that if you took a consensus of all those lists and averaged them out, then yes, you'd get Ocarana as the top game of all time. You are remembering incorrectly if you remember otherwise.

@Hoops : Look, I'm not going to argue this point anymore. If you read my earlier posts then you are already aware that I concede the fact that OoT was a critical darling; there is no debating that. Unfortunately, I have a mind of my own and attributes that make me unique and one of those characteristics is being only marginally impressed by OoT when it was released. I have played it several times since then and I remain as marginally impressed with it now as I was with it then.
It's a good game; when judged by 1998 standards but no I do not PERSONALLY feel that it even remotely deserves any 'best game ever' descriptor.
This is not true of all older games; for example I feel that Super Metroid for Super Nintendo is vastly superior to OoT as is Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VII.
Its just my opinion.

@Aerothorn I have never heard anyone call Avatar the best movie ever made.
Even my frat buddies didn't go so far as to say that. General Consensus I thought was Citizen Kane, which I think is a pretty damn good comparison.
The work itself shot the medium forward, but if it hadn't been the first to perfect so many things it would be forgotten. These days because everyone copied all the best parts.

@thund3rstruck Dude, it's better to just not comment on gaming sites. Not that you should hide your opinion, but gamers always, nearly always, take a differing opinion the wrong way and blow a simple statement out of proportion.
I also concur with your sentiments- Ocarina of time was good but it isn't my "best game of all time". Somebody say up there that it's usually always on someone's top five "greatest games of all time" list, but me, I only seem to notice that from gaming website and magazine articles. this doesn't mean Ocarina of time isn't frequently on this list, but OoT isn't on *everyone's list*.
Finally, I usually don't like to say anything to a rabid fanbase, but I honestly don't see the appeal in buying yet another copy of OoT. I've been playing some version or other at either my own or a friend's house for, what, a decade now? Now, I don't expect to sway anyone into not buying the game or a 3DS; i'm not arguing that. But really, don't any of you think it's a bit silly to buy the same handful of "classic" titles for every nintendo system that releases? (Before someone pipes up calling me an idiot for generalizing: I know not everyone has multiple working copies of old games. But we all know people do exist that buy the same games over and over. It's more directed at them.)

In fairness .... the remake of OOT is in no way a system seller for me.
It is however a must have once I am sufficiently motivated to buy a 3DS.
Think New games, New IP... hell I'd even settle for old IP with New games.

New IP? You do realize your talking about Nintendo right? they're not exactly known for releasing anything decent other than Mario, Zelda, and Metroid games right? (I realize they have other IP's that they also do this with i.e. kirby and donkey kong) Your not exactly talking about a company known for creating new IP's this generation.... I think re-releases may be your best bet for a system seller right about now.

Nintendo isn't exactly known for new IPs since the end of the 80s. The only significant additions I can recall (other than their perennial flagpole, Pokemon) are Pilotwings and Pikmin, if you can call those significant. More experimental than anything else. And Smash Bros. is a mash-up, not an original IP.

Although you're right about a remake not being a system seller, I think this kind of game is the best option when the system launched recently.
A new IP would be nice, but it's too risky to sell a new system with new IPs. It's better if they use a known brand of character.
