SOE suspends services after discovering 'an issue'

Uh-oh. While Sony Online Entertainment had assured its customers last week that, "to the best of our knowledge, no customer personal information got out to any unauthorized person or persons" during last month's breach into Sony's systems, the MMO division today suspended its games and services, including its websites and Facebook titles.

"We have had to take the SOE service down temporarily," the group said in a brief statement this morning. "In the course of our investigation into the intrusion into our systems we have discovered an issue that warrants enough concern for us to take the service down effective immediately."

SOE added that it would provide an update later today. In the meantime, the notification page suggests you download and play some (offline) casual games to distract you from that horrible feeling in the pit of your stomach.

Update: SOE has announced that it has lost 12,700 customer credit card numbers as the result of an attack, and roughly 24.6 million accounts may have been breached. Check out our follow-up post for more information.

Sad, just sad. That's the only thing I can say about the situation Sony/Playstation are in now.

yeah I hope they do put a ton more money and effort into security. but at the same time I hope they don't stop going after these people in court. I know it creates a vicious circle, but people hacking into accounts need to know that they are not untouchable.

I'd say it's just a precaution. They're being hyper careful after the PSN hack. Happens in every line of work, when s*it hits the fan, everyone becomes extremely cautious and double checks stuff that otherwise would pass unnoticed.

That said, IF they have similar security mechanisms at SOE, it would make sense that the PSN hackers target them next.

Better safe than sorry. At least they took it down while it was vulerable, before anything happened.

Here's a serious question: what kind of investigations are still going on that they just now found this out? I thought they were well onto the reconstruction phase.

You're confusing SOE and PSN. While both are Sony, SOE is the MMO wing while PSN covers consoles.

@SisypheanLife I understand that, but this bulletin mentions "our investigation in the intrusion into our systems," which I assume is referring to the PSN breach.

Chances are it was just a separate concurrent investigation launched after Sony set out a "check yoselves" memo and has nothing to do with the rebuilding of PSN. I was just confused because even though they finished their audit a while ago and mentioned that SOE was not breached, so I had no idea why they were going back a second time.

Oh well, at least while everything is down, I can play HeroSmash or AdventureQuest Worlds for free.

People, please read the statement properly. SOE hasn't been hacked, they're just taking it down to they can add more security.
