I actually thought this was some type of joke. To be honest the PSN attack said data was comprimised, which meant there was a possibility of theft.

This is the real deal now folks. Sony aren't in a good position, and this was lined up to be a really strong year for them.

I guess shit happens.

SOE is not the same company as SCE this doesnt stop them from bringing PSN back up as these are two separate sets of servers.

@Ellimem I'm just curious to see if SWG will even be re-opened? This seems like the perfect excuse for Mr John Smedley to pull-out the Sunset Card on the game.

Yeah, they might hack your Sony TV and bluray player. Maybe they'll hack your Sony speakers too. Oh ,and don't forget to toss out your Sony headphones, I heard they print your SSN on the cord.

You realize this could happen to nearly any company, right? Even with the best security, all you need is for the right person or people to get "social engineered", and all your high tech countermeasures are rendered moot.

You joke about the TV and the blue-ray players getting hacked .... Most of them are becoming network ready/enabled these days and are arguably the weakest security point in peoples personal networks.

Actually I never have used Sony because all their products aren't really reliable. I spent 30 bucks on headphones from Sony & they burned out on me after 3 months. I stupidly bought another pair & they burned out after about the same amount of time. My living room TV (Which was a Sony) died after only 2 years of owning it. Good thing it was under the warranty so I returned it & got a Samsung. I'm not saying that this is the case with all Sony products but based on my personal experience, I don't think I'd be getting a Sony product anytime soon. & this situation doesn't help. I'm sure other people are feeling the same way.

Similar breaches HAVE happened to other companies, a quick Google search brings up this

@Roxas560 Sony is an arrogant company that routinely overprices their products just because they are 'Sony'. Their quality does not match their price and if you do research you will see companies like Samsung and LG televisions are just as good and a lot of times better then Sony at a much more affordable price. Sony's Blu Rey is a sham as well as HD DVD would have been way better for consumers at a much lower price as well. Hell, just look at the cost of the PS3 when it was launched, a joke, and those who spent that amount of money for a PS3 were fanboys and not smart consumers. I could go on about Sony and the way they do business but i'm hoping you get my point. As far as this security breach, it's a reflection of how arrogant Sony is by not implementing better protection of their customers private information.

I dunno, even still, if credit cards were compromised from a 2007 database...then there is a pretty good possibility the vast majority are bad anyway. Expiration dates alone would have all rolled over by now.

@Antipilor - The real question is: If they did, did they use the same method for the PSN servers as they did the SOE servers? If so, logically speaking, the CC data from the PSN data breach could be in jeopardy as well.

I'm trying...very hard not to call out anyone that thought this wasn't a huge deal, but it is difficult to hold in my snark. This is a colossal screw up, and it gets worse every day. What's next? Sony Style's servers?

If you are reading this, and you used a card at ANY Sony service, my advice is to change your number. Do it now. It's free, it doesn't ding your credit, and it is the smart thing to do. I'd also change any passwords that may have been used on a Sony service, and make sure you didn't use the same password at any other sites.

I go away for a day, and we go from "Seriously guys, no credit card data got stolen" to "Ok, over ten thousand were stolen" and I have a fear that by tomorrow it's going to be millions. I changed my cards already, but I'm afraid for anyone that hasn't taken that step. Sony needs to get these people (those that definitely had their CC data stolen) credit monitoring immediately, and they need to contact them directly to tell them what happened.

Well, they just told us this morning that nothing was stolen and all rumors to the contrary were just that. Now they say they 100% did lose them and gave us a specific number.

I don't believe anything they are telling us anymore.

I am still waiting for my 4D....time travelling PS3s.

You're taking the piss right?...

No?...

In that case i wouldn't like to be Sony right now. 12,700 is a fairly accurate number, not the kind of number the company would release in a public statement as they tend to give round average numbers. Everything seems to be going wrong for them lately which is a shame.
