Capcom profits soar with help from record AAA game sales
41
Good ol' video games came through for Capcom over the twelve months ending March 31, 2011. The company reported "a history-making milestone" of five million-seller titles in the period, with Monster Hunter Freedom 3 (4.6 million units shipped) leading the pack. Additionally, Dead Rising 2 (2.2M units), Marvel vs. Capcom 3 (2M units), Super Street Fighter IV (1.6M units) and Lost Planet 2 (1.5M units) racked up high shipment numbers, and each surpassed the million-mark in pure sales.
In all, net sales in Capcom's "Consumer Online Games" division increased 60.8 percent over the previous fiscal year to ¥70.3 billion (about $873 million). But the sales success of so-called "major titles" wasn't the only contributing factor in Capcom's record bottom line for a fiscal year, which showed a net income increase of 257.6 percent over the previous year to ¥7.75 billion -- roughly $96.3 million in profit!
Despite reported losses of ¥1.45 billion due to restructuring and another ¥105 million filed under "disaster" -- the Great East Japan Earthquake knocked out ten of Capcom's arcades -- all of the company's business units recorded operating income gains for the year. Notably, the "Mobile Contents" division enjoyed some highlights, with downloads of The Smurfs' Village Facebook game exceeding expectations "by far" and the Japan-only iPhone version of Ghost Trick faring "well."
Capcom tempered its jubilation, however, noting that the forecast for the current fiscal year (ending March 31, 2012) calls for "lower sales and earnings." The company anticipates "immeasurable economic losses" in Japan due to the earthquake and its aftermath, as well as a "downturn in consumer confidence" in the game industry at large -- not to mention Capcom's weaker offering of AAA titles this year. Dead Rising 2 ... again?
"We will focus more than ever before on our global operations as the environment surrounding the industry rapidly changes," Capcom said, observing that "the rise of social games [is] fueling the growth of new competitors in the industry."

Hopefully with Monster Hunter Tri showing some strong success in the market, specially with it leading the pack like that, will get Capcom to actually develop a real console MH game, and not a game for a console-lite system with a track record of being more for shovelware and waggling, than competent online play.
Tri was decent, but the PSP games alone were better than it, it's only saving grace being the switch axe weapon.

Actually I believe it's the PSP game MH Freedom 3 that is mentioned in the article. The Wii game sold well but not that well.
And yes I hope Capcom finally makes the decision to make a PS3/360 MH. It's a guaranteed million seller and I cant understand why they haven't done it yet.

Because it would've been far more expensive to develop it for PS3/360 instead of Wii. Lower costs make it easier to make a profit, especially for a niche game with a following on handhelds and not consoles. MHTri has sold about 2 million worldwide, with most of that being in Japan.

Ah, you're right. I saw 3 and I just end up thinking "Tri". Well, either way I'm glad to see sales strong, and hope that when it does finally get release state-side it does well enough for a PS3 Monster Hunter game, as Tri was originally planned to be.
@Evin
Sorry if I harbor some rather ill will towards the wii, but that is essentially what it is. The ratio between shovelware and good game is pretty much 10:1 by now, and the only redeeming factor of it is that each good game is like a Spartan against the 10 shovelware persians ala 300.
But it's true. The wii and its "online play" is nearly nonexistent, and neither is any functional form of communication besides a device meant to capture all the sounds in the room, not just your voice. Monster Hunter Tri was also censored heavily, I can't warn people about a certain Monster's bite, or say "dodge after he roars", because "bite" and "after" are offensive words apparently and thus blocked completely.
And the transition from PS3 to Wii affected Tri. They had to use up disk space just to include the event quests, instead of treating it like DLC as the PSP games done. This restricted both the variety of monsters in the game, as well as armor. There is only one look for armor, instead of the normal 2. Normal or G-rank, in Tri its all the same.

@DevilSei - I seriously don't understand this shovelware argument. It assumes that basically every console in history hasn't been littered with shovelware. Real talk: every console has that same ratio of shovelware. What the real issue might be is that a particular console's "good games" don't appeal to you. For instance, you might not dig on what the Wii has to offer (I personally think there's a TON of awesome games on the Wii that people conveniently forget about), while I don't really give very many craps about what's on the XBox 360.
The other thing is that you clearly read video game websites. How can shovelware possibly affect you? You should, by this point in this generation's life cycle especially, know both what is generally considered good and what your own tastes are. If you never have to buy a piece of shovelware, why does it matter? Like, at all?

To be honest, the only reason why Monster Hunter isn't popular in the west as much is because of the grinding and the controls, its an awesome game and amongst the most enjoyable series I've ever played, but the controls are a pain in the arse and if the grinding was lessened a little with a sandbox type open world, similar to that of Just Cause 2 and more of a plot to go with it (of course with online mutliplayer) that to me is the recipe for of the most awesome games on the market :D
Capcom, please make a HD Monster Hunter with PSN and XBL capabilities, please please please >_

I think you will find opinions on that divided. To me, LP2 is a FAR better game than the first.
But I must also admit I played the second game before the first as well as the inferior PS3 version of the first game (judging by comparisons I've read)

I've never understood the LP2 hate either. I as well as several others have played this game on every known difficulty level and still play it.
My only gripe is that there wasn't enough of it....felt like there could have been missions added on 'after the fact' (stopping here, spoiler prevention).

@Pure Black World Tendency I'm well aware of divided opinions, it was just a gross exaggeration to get a point across. There was once a time when I knew probably 50% of the people online in Lost Planet (not an exaggeration ... everyone on my friends list I didn't know IRL I meet thanks to LP), seeing as I played it for a year straight. I was ranked one in one of the online boards, and in the top 50 in almost every other When Colonies came out everyone migrated there, together, it was like one big happy family.
We all migrated to LP2 ... and after two weeks, you'd be lucky to see any of us on anymore.
Point being, the hardcore fanbase that was there from the beginning is greatly disappointed in the sequel. The majority of people that have stuck with it, or otherwise found it an improvement are the people who weren't at all attached to the original, which is why I used '1.5 million Lost Planet and Lost Planet Colonies fans' and not '1.5 million people'.

Lost Planet 2 was a AAA game? Is that based on sales alone? After playing for a week I had to get rid of it. So bad.

Thing is, Monster Hunter isn't a popular series... in the US.
In Japan, its a rather huge factor in many console sales around the time of its release, and is guaranteed to sell amazingly well. Here though, its not so much... I know maybe 5, 6 people personally who play Monster hunter.
4 of which are in the same family as each other.

i got bored of dead rising fast .. DR2 was fun in CO-OP but i had it rented but fortunately i don't like the whole time limit thing sure that is a key part of the game but i don't like it .. after i played it and brought it back all i could say was thank god it's returned too the store ! i liked the lost planet 2 demo but i wouldn't buy it .. besides i hear trophies are glitched in the game.
in the end Capcom right now is releasing nothing i am interested in .. last thing i bought from them was Final Fight on PSN and i can't even play that cause i have to be online. Capcom is losing me from their games i hate to say :(

So... does Capcom have no faith in Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City? Should we be worried? Do they imagine it won't be out before the end of the fiscal year?

Out of interest, how well has Okamiden sold?
Hopefully better than Okami. Want this to become a series similar to Zelda as has potential to be if given financial success.
