This story is getting a bit long in the tooth. Gaming is a business. Businesses make money. Quoting sales figures for a map pack, to "stimulate" commenters to rage against the price, and the validity of Call of Duty as a franchise, is ten times worse than the alleged offenses of this franchise.

So people do still play this game... I'm just glad I am not part of the millions who paid $15 for 4 maps.

@mst3karlo Actually its 4 mp maps with a zombies one. Personally i think its worth it if all you do is play cod, breathe cod, sleep cod, think cod lol. If all you do is play b.ops then it should be worth it.

Why? What makes you better than the folks who did pay the $15?

@mst3karlo Is it really that bad if the maps are top quality and worth $15?

The DLC maps for Black Ops have been fantastic, especially the zombie maps.

I also much prefer this to the EA method of having 50000 DLCs on launch.

Nothing at all. In fact I love the zombies mode that Treyarch made but multiplayer is "Blah" for me, so from my position, i'd be paying $15 for a Zombies map.

So you are not into the multiplayer aspect of Black Ops, you only like 1/3 of the game provided by Treyarch, and based on your response is it safe to assume that you are glad you didn't spend the $15.00 because you are fortunate to only like 1/3 of the game and therefore could use that $15.00 to better use?

@psnshe69mee - Because it's an earnings call for investors. Investors generally like to know how the sales are doing for the company they're investing in.

I run a very popular Steam group and for kicks some of the other admins kicked+blocked any of the members who bought the map pack.

I gotta admit it is stupid to spend that much on 5 maps. Problem is that other developers will see that it works and up goes the cost of all our DLC.

What good would a LAN party be if I can't get on to the store to buy it? Also, LAN parties are too much hassle and completely pointless in my opinion.

Back in my day... We made our own maps! And we liked it! We made our own models too! Why... I remember playing Half-Life Deathmatch and playing against Homer Simpson, Spawn, and Goku! To the death! Not this newfangled regenerating health! We had to search for our medkits! Also, we started each life with nary nothin but a pistol and a crowbar~! You youngins have it so easy nowadays...

Its stats like these which makes me ponder whether (or when) this cash cow will die. It'll happen eventually; thats a definite with any annualised franchise after its peak. Its just a question of when.

It also makes me ponder how much exactly peer preassure helps sell this stuff for the price it somehow continues to maintain. Theres so much games worthy of these numbers which will never get them, how much peer preassure and being a social phenominom impact these numbers is something i'd like to know.

In all honesty, I've never played a CoD game (not out of rebellion or anything, but simply because FPS games tend to bore me), and even I'm tired of the predictable "backlash" the series generates whenever mentioned online. There's so much genuinely interesting, diverse stuff going on in gaming right now that it seems almost criminal for the genuinely dedicated gamer base to waste so much time fuming about it.

Plus, for all of the old-school FPS players out there lamenting how Kotick has ruined the gene they loved, and how you wish we would all just go back to playing Quake mods over 56k connections, try being a longtime console gamer in this day and age. When you grew up on platformers and JRPGs, the current tidal wave of FPS games, no matter how watered down, is an embarrassment of riches compared to the meager scraps and indie genre tributes that we've had to subsist on.

I fear the day that other developers start doing the same. I've not been supporting Activision since quite a while, but I doubt they will care when there are who knows how many millions still buying their game each year.

Props to them for selling so much I guess. Let's see how long it takes to kill their franchise.

I despise Call of Duty multiplayer but love the zombie mode. I wish they'd price it separately, 400 for the zombie map and 800 for the multiplayer maps.

I don't know what is with all the defending going on around here, but if you think paying $15 for a "High-quality" map pack isn't ridiculous, then you're either very well-off or addicted and in denial.

There is no reason other than the fact that Activision KNOWS people will pay for it. That is greedy, I don't care if they're a company and they're goal is to make money. That is just exploitation. They know people will pay and because 1.4 MILLION people did in 24 hours, don't start bitching when they raise the price to $20 because it "includes new character skins" or whatever. That is 1/4 the original game price and that is crazy.

I think map pack prices are criminal. In fact, DLC in general is often vary expensive, hence why I rarely buy it. But for those that have nothing better to spend their money on, I won't stop them. I'd just rather spend mine on other things, rather than supporting Activision. Not that one person makes a difference, but it still....

I do get annoyed seeing that Modern Warfare (Call of Duty 4) as well as all of the following games in the series are still full price whilst many MANY other good Xbox and PS3 games can be found much cheaper or at least have their price lowered after some time in the market.

Still, I've got to hand it to Activision. They may make the same mind-numbing game each year with some new updates, but they sure rake in a lot if money for it. I'd rather be a little more creative (although I guess crossbows that launch explosives and a DOS prompt count) but oh well, whatever floats their boat.

On a side-note, it'd be funny if Call of Duty became the next almost-cult, like Star Trek. I know, it won't happen, but it'd be funny.

Eighty five percent of my gaming is spent playing Black Ops online multi-player and I still think $15. is a little steep. Sure 15 bucks for DLC2 doesn't sound like much, but when combined with the original game price, plus DLC1, you're looking at a 100 dollar investment.

Why would campers buy map packs? They never explore the entire map anyway. lol

And for some reason Wii is left out of the picture. 5 months, and we get nothing but crap. Updates are nice and important, but DLC is a big fail. We are the only system left out. We still have heard nothing on whether it's gonna happen or not. If they don't release it by the next COD the Wii gets, it'll be too late. They need to hurry up and get something good done.
