Craaaaaaaaaaaap. I was hoping this wouldn't be the case. Preordered my copy on Amazon weeks ago...oh well, when I get off work tomorrow my copy should be setting on my doorstep. Hopefully I have a good time with it.

@ForeverAndEver on the same coin I would like to know how well I am doing in my kdr...it isn't king but it's a good signifier of how well I am doing. I actually prefer the Bungie route of being able to go online and see hyper in depth stats though I don't need it. Obviously I am going to hold judgement until tomorrow, but I'm currently watching the Giant Bomb quick look and its looking/sounding kinda :(

It's not just your K/D score. The fact that there is no post game statistics period is something that just isn't acceptable in a shooter these days. Even TF2, one of the more objective based shooters this generation, includes a basic ranking system based on how well you're fulfilling the objectives, and more details on things likes kills, assists and deaths.

But no matter what I'll bet this is the worst rebuttal you've ever read on Joystiq.

Yeah man, I was totally assuming this was going to be great. One problem with this end of days for shooters mentioned in the article is that we're not really getting that many worth playing these days (possibly Rage and BF3?). If it's not a safe bet, it seems that they don't get the green light. And 'safe bet' is currently a terrible Modern Warfare clone, which is not a safe bet at all.

Maybe Valve can throw us a new and novel multiplayer shooter by this time next year. Or perhaps Brink can follow their philosophy and patch out the issues?

Oh well...might as well sit and try to enjoy it once the PSN comes back. I'll give the SP a try too since I'm already there.

@sammo21 FYI, he hardly played Brink so I'd keep that in mind going forward anytime Griffin reviews anything. My posts on the matter are buried four pages deep at the moment but you can read my findings at Voodoo Extreme. I played with Griffin during last week's media event, and I don't think he bothered playing at all beyond that. He didn't even bother completing either campaign, as seen in the pictures I took.

Next time, wait a week.

@sammo21 I still think this is going to be a good game, if you check out http://www.metacritic.com/game/xbox-360/brink/critic-reviews it shows all the big sites that review it and only joystiq and 1UP gave it a bad review out of 19 large sites! so this could just be a one off...

@Tridus lol, this one purchase is meant to teach me a lesson? I typically have a good eye games and this game has never caught on with me. A close friend has been really excited for this and even with my trepidation concerning the game's quality and he wanted me to play with him so no real biggie.

Also, not all games so cheap. I mostly pre-order from Amazon for several reasons:
1.) Release day shipping at no real extra cost. I don't like going to a store when I get off work and I typically abhor midnight launches. IF I get it through Amazon they have it on my doorstep by the time I get home from work.
2.)Cheaper prices, usually, and they will credit you back if they lower the price...which has happened several times.
3.)Amazon credit. Amazon credits pre-orders (not all) with $10-20 credit on top of pre-order bonuses. While pre-order bonuses typically are so pointless to begin with they don't ever get me to pre-order something but the credit does.

Again, if I choose to I can return the copy and have my $30-40 back in my account by week's end...but we'll see. Again, I wouldn't think this teaches me a lesson about anything other than my instincts about games are still better than other people's I know.

@Ohmwrecker Read your article over at the link you posted, and I'm just curious what would be an average Gamer Score for someone who's not really an excellent gamer (or not interested in completing every achievement available per game) but still played Brink for a fairly good amount of time? I'm not as hardcore a gamer as you guys are, so I'm not that into having really high Gamer Scores. Just noticed that you used that line of reasoning to show that this review is half-baked.

This isn't the question. If you are doing a professional review of a game, You should AT LEAST finish the damn game before posting your review. Griffen's gamerscore shows he didn't even finish it, and far from it. Which makes this review crap.

@Guibs

By the logic, how would one ever review an MMORPG? How would someone review a game like Fallout 3 in any sort of timely manner? Define "finishing" a game. Every mission and sidequest? Just the main story? Should someone be barred from reviewing Rock Band 3 unless they can 5-star every song with every instrument? What if a game is so broken that it's obvious within the first hour? Should a reviewer be required to finish it?

Also, GS does not necessarily equate directly to time played. I haven't played Brink, and I haven't seen the achievements, but generally you can't look at someone's GS and say with any certainty how much time they have spent in a game.

If Griffin played the game for 12 hours, that seems like plenty of time to form an opinion about it and write a review. If I don't like a game, I generally know well before I have put that much time into it. If he felt this way about Brink after 12 hours I doubt that putting in a couple more and getting the endgame achievement is going to change his mind.

Well that's just an example of personal taste. Reviews shouldn't be held as the end all be all opinion on games and you should form your own opinions. I personally fell in line with the Joystiq review's complaints of difficulty with L4D2, my buddies and I picked it up one weekend to play and we constantly died and none of us are bad at FPS games. Of course some people like the challenge (or perhaps played it on the PC where it sounds like the difficulty is more tolerable) and will disagree with the review and that's completely.

In this instance Griffin played the game long enough to know he wasn't enjoying it. Why should he have some obligation to play more while pretending to enjoy it just to appease people? I only have 35 gamerscore in GTA IV, yet that was more than enough for me to realize that it wasn't my cup of tea (or really a good game at all, but that's an argument for a different time).

It's an objective based team shooter, not a mystery thriller.

you should finish a game's story if you're going to comment on how well it ties together. If the playing the game sucks, playing a whole lot of it isn't going to change that.

A terrible review for a great game, they barely even played it /=

It's like all the reviewers for Brink didn't want to play it, they just played it for an hour or so and then wrote a long-winded review about how terrible it is, when it's not terrible at all.

IGN is doing everthing they can to keep what was removed from the article from seeing the light of day. They are removing the content from people's comments in the Voodoo Brink review. For those of you who have not read it, here it is:

"Uh oh, time for some drama boys and girls. I felt that Joystiq's Brink review was fishy, it almost came off as if it was written by someone that had spent very little time with the game. I was also pretty sure that Griffin McElroy was one of the editors that I played in the media game with. So, I decided to do a little digging, and confirmed that I had played with him while he was under his Xbox Live gamertag called "The Pencil Rain".
The kicker is Mr. McElroy has only earned a total Brink gamerscore value of 225, primarily from achievements that pretty much unlock themselves in the opening hour or two of play. I had over a couple hundred points just after the media playtest, and I'd imagine that's where he left off too. Xbox Live says he was playing Brink just a couple hours ago, yet again the value is 225. In my picture of his gamerscore details below you'll see that he hasn't completed either campaign, let alone the "what if" missions.

This puts a pretty big black mark on Joystiq's journalistic integrity in my eyes. If I had to guess the amount of time he spent playing it'd be a few hours at best, and from my point of view that's extremely unprofessional. But great job on that 2/5 score Griffin, way to shaft Splash Damage and Bethesda by putting in an absolute minimal amount of effort into your review."

@LoveYouSomeEric

Credible sources will post their MMO reviews after weeks of playing and trying to reach as far as possible through the leveling system before posting reviews. Anything short of that is a fraud to my eye.

You also get carried away in your example which shows you are lacking argument. I would fully expect a reviewer to have finish all sets list before posting their reviews of Rockband. How many stars the reviewer got for each song would be irrelevant.

The issue here is that the game isn't "broken" and doesn't prevent anyone from finishing it. From other website, it doesn't even seems to require a lot of time to get most acheivement as the game seems pretty generous in that regard. The allegation here is that Griffen played 2 hours of the game, in a media event and based on that alone, gave it a 2 stars rating. I hope this isn't true, but let's face it, It probably is and Griffin isn't the first or the last being cought doing so.

It just showed that reviews here are lacking and it's a desapointement because I like the site. This isn't some no joe blog with people posting here on their free time. These are paid "professional". I expect a professional to play through the main campaign of a game which provides one before posting a review. Then again, this is my view of what should be done at the minimum to review a game. Looks like in 2011 that's too much to ask. Soon "professionals" will review games only by reading the back of the game's case...

Also, I want to add that Brink might possibly be still be worth only 2 stars out of 5. I didn't play it, so I don't know. I am just really concerned about the tendency that reviewers have to get reviews out with so few hours of gametime.

Regarding Left 4 Dead 2 difficulty, playing with 4 friends on normal is easy peasy....different strokes for different folks.

Seriously though, SOOOOOO much lag in the game. I think it might be the worst in console multiplayer, for me, this generation.

I think I would be willing to say 3/5 stars if the game consistently had a good connection and migrating hosts wasn't a pain...but the rest of the complaints still stand.

I played the game for over 7 hours and completely finished all of the missions on the security side before giving up and stopping. This game sucks, flat out. Sure there are defenders, hell as this review pointed out there were people defending this game BEFORE IT WAS EVEN PLAYED BY THEM. No matter what it boils down to the facts are there...the game is boners and its several steps back from what Splash Damage did with even Quake Wars. Get over it.

And using the word nepotism doesn't make you smart now it just makes you look like a pretentious ass.

@Funkmaster General Same. Though I gotta say, while I can't ignore issues with AI and no lobby system, the fact that you have to sometimes sacrifice your own preferences for the good of the team and pick another class - as far as I'm concerned that's actually a plus. This encourages players to explore all the classes instead of sticking with only their favourite. And you know how they say "there's no I in team". :D

Still disappointing. Glad I got it on sale, maybe I'll like it more than the reviewer after all.

@sammo21 - The complete lack of any marketing was enough to tell me that Bethesda never had any faith in the game to begin with, probably because they knew it wasn't very good.

It's a shame, because I've been longing for a shooter that is a bit..looser, than Call of Duty and its ilk. More in the vein of Unreal Tournament 2003/2004. I guess the wait continues.

This is one review of many. If you go to metacritic you'll see the game got an average score of 72--which actually isn't bad. It just isn't great.

It's bad enough you're not at least willing to play the game first but to trust only one person's perspective over many--tsk tsk.
