Microsoft: 'Kinect games portfolio will triple by the end of the year'
68
If you were anything like us, several days of non-stop Dance Central-ing was the extent of your Kinect love affair. Now, six months into the relationship, things have gotten a bit ... cold. While Microsoft's motion-sensing doodad launched with an impressive 17 games in its November 2010 lineup, things have been quiet on the Kinect front since then. But Microsoft says it's getting ready to ramp up on Kinect games.
"And in anticipation of another record year in 2011," a press release trumpeting the console maker's strong NPD showings said, "Microsoft announced the size of the Kinect games portfolio will triple by the end of the year." Wikipedia lists 26 current Kinect releases with 26 more in development. A tripling would indicate there are 26 additional games not yet known.
"We've seen some of the media start to ask the question, 'When are we going to see more Kinect games coming?'," Microsoft product manager David Dennis told Joystiq this evening. "As we sat there and looked at it we realized we've got a lot of games coming and we're going to show a lot of them at E3."
But Kinect games won't be the only things Microsoft shares at E3. When asked if the relatively anemic first-party "core" lineup from Microsoft Game Studios this year – especially relative to the aggressive rollout of Kinect games – represented a deprioritization of that audience late in the Xbox 360's lifecycle, Dennis insisted that wasn't the case. "We know that the core what took Xbox and made it the home for core games, whether they're first-party games or third-party games. We would certainly never leave that audience behind," Dennis said. "So for us and for Phil [Spencer] and the folks over at MGS, it's not about deprioritizing one or the other. It's about how we go big on any and all: Go big on Kinect games; go big on core games."
When asked if there would be additional core game announcements beyond Gears 3, Forza 4, Codename: Kingdoms, and the totally-a-secret Halo: Combat Evolved remake, Dennis said, "We certainly expect to have a big E3 and we're saving a lot of our cards until then." We know a good percentage of that deck includes Kinect games; we'll have to wait until Microsoft's E3 press conference to find out how deep its core plans go.

Oh joy! It's sounding like "Go big on core games" means their conference will be 80% Kinecrap and 20% worth while content. At least that's better than last years 95/5%.

Wow, that was some really clever word play you busted out there.
Honestly, I'd be way more excited to hear about a new first-party Kinect title that uses the hardware in innovative ways than I would about yet another diarrhea-colored game in the Call of Duty franchise...or Gears of War...or Halo...

@DarknessBear oh come on. The Kinect is still new, I think we should give it a chance. There is no real definition of a "gamer" so yes the casual market counts hence the iPhone being so successful. I am really looking forward to the future of the Kinect. I think it will get better over time and as a gamer I am excited for this new technology.

@DarknessBear Well, there are a couple games I am interested in. Steel Battalion Heavy Armor, Rise of Nightmares, and Child of Eden. Those three games would make Kinect worth the purchase for me.
But I got my Kinect for free from the beta, so I am not constantly looking for a way to justify my purchase.

So we're getting two sequels to Just Dance and Kinect Sports? Or were there other good games for Kinect?

Whoops, my bad, I typed Dance Central the first time, but I went to fix something and it came back out as Just Dance...though in all honesty Just Dance is just as fun as Dance Central, you're doing the same thing, regardless of the way you're tracked.

Because you are tracked? Dance Central may be a better game due to tracking you better, but as far as the actual gameplay, it's exactly the same, you're just dancing.
Either way, you're defending Kinect, which is already running out of ideas. All the new games are just rehashed of older ones, and in the same genres of Dance, fitness and sports. They don't even use Kinect in MLB 2K11 or Tiger Woods 12 (where The Move was used perfectly). Kinect is bombing, and even if PSN is down, Sony is doing something right with their motion controller by using it in actual games. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows Part 1 is STILL the only traditional game with optional Kinect controls.

You're right. I don't hate any hardware or really care about fanboyism, but things like Kinect and Move have no future. Well, they do, but it's bleak.
Kinect has a severe case of Wii-itis. Buy, use for 2 weeks, collect dust for 7 years, sell at garage sale. I own a Wii and in the past few years, so many great games have come out for it. That's all Kinect needs... Monster Hunter Tri Kinectimals where you can play with the monsters you capture. Or like... Super Halo Galaxy.
In all seriousness, this announcement doesn't mean much. Kinect had a few gimmicky games, so now we'll see... 15 gimmicky games. Sure, Microsoft are making money, but real gamers spit at this kind of thing, Move and most Wii titles included.
Side note; Don't defend Move. I love Sony, but seriously, don't defend it.

Bombing in sales =/= Bombing in potential. 12 million Kinects have sold? But look who bought them, the people that look at it "Oh this is much better than the Wii". They buy it with a launch title, and then all of a sudden they don't get any games for it because it's too limited.
Golf, Tennis and Baseball games are being released on Wii and PS3 with motion control support, as well as FPS titles, but Kinect is getting stuck in the casual genre route. Microsoft didn't even add Kinect support to older titles (like Sony and third parties did with games like MAG, RE5 and Tiger Woods). Kinect may be selling well, but the momentum is going to slow down once consumers realize the game selection isn't getting better.

Isn't there some kind of horror game for Kinect that Sega's publishing?
Nightmares of...something?
Or...something of Nightmares?
In any case, yes. More Kinect titles, please.
Preferably something that isn't a dance or fitness game would be just aces.

Still waiting on those "good" kinect games before I buy one.
I like dance central as much as the next guy but I need more than 1 game to justify the purchase.
So far only the SEGA Horror Game is sounds awesome to me at the moment.

It's hard for me to decide which conference I am looking forward to the most: Microsoft or Nintendo. Nintendo has Project Cafe and more of the 3DS lineup, but I know Microsoft is holding some really juicy stuff. Microsoft is always the best about keeping secrets, and that leaves plenty of surprises.
Sony's will be heavily focused on the NGP which I am not really interested in, and Uncharted 3 is the one game I look forward to the most for PS3. I will be interested in more 3D talk if there is much since I just got a 3D plasma.
