The Xperia Play has yet to launch in the US, but it's already available in the UK, Canada, Ireland and Spain. Since arriving in those regions last month, sales of PSOne titles being offered for the phone haven't exactly been brisk, evidently. Current figures based on the Android Marketplace peg sales at below 1,000 installs for each title: Cool Boarders 2, Destruction Derby, MediEvil, Syphon Filter and Jumping Flash.
Dominic Neil-Dwyer, Head of Market Development at Sony Ericsson, told PlayStation LifeStyle that it's not really a concern. "There's only a few, at the minute, PlayStation One titles there, and there's more coming on a regular basis," he said. "And there's the whole PlayStation as a content provider exclusive to the device...so, there's no concerns, it's a revolutionary device, it's shaking up the market, we're very pleased with it."
As for what the future has in store, he says to look to E3, as more games and support for the device are sure to be announced there. "There'll be more exclusives to come," Neil-Dwyer promised. "We'll be making some pretty big announcements at E3."

@ToTheMoon I assume you're being sarcastic. Blackberries are not popular at all anymore, especially not with the younger crowd (at least where I'm from). The few people I know that use them only use them because they have to for work, or because it was cheap on a contract.
And when you consider the worthless phones they continue to put out, they really need to step it up.
In regards to the Play: I'm sure it's a good phone, but I wouldn't want it on a two year contract. And I've heard the touchpads aren't the greatest. I'll have to try one out once it's released in the US.

Maybe if it were attached to your PSN and didn't force you to re-buy shit you've already bought once(or twice) people would care.

That is exactly what stopped it being a day one buy, and made it a never want to buy.

Should've given the Xperia Play and NGP identical specs, even if that would mean delaying the Play to Fall 2011.

@einhanderkiller
Or just given the NGP the ability to make phone calls and all the other stuff that phones do.
That would have been much better.

Is it just me, or has the Xperia Play just been kind of forgotten already? It's difficult to remember this thing exists when phones like the Galaxy S II, Thunderbolt, and Atrix are available and are all more powerful than the XP.

Announcing that sales have been slow on the PS1 games right now (during this PSN outage) is like announcing that gasoline sales have dropped (while prices are over 4 bucks)...

It might be because nobody really cares about those PS1 games. I know I don't.

Maybe if they kept the same account carried over from PSN to this phone and didn't have to pay for the exact same games again...maybe, JUST maybe, they might see a better feedback.
Then again, I guess they would have to get their act together with PSN first...and that list of games available is laughable....Cool Borders 2.....really?

@kalmis As opposed to the sleek, smooth and barely visible controls that were available on teh PS1 back in the day, right ;-)

In terms of mobile phones, we're suddenly in the world of (good) 99 cent games while companies like Sony and Square are still trying to rock the Ngage model of business.
Hell, $5 for Destruction Derby only sounds good to us "gamers", and they already screwed that part up.

Not surprising. Plenty of good PS1 games out there but I'm sure a lot of people have played them already. I wouldn't mind having one but I prefer iOS to Android. I dunno, I guess people prefer the better Android phones that have physical keypads.

The main problem is that right next to the PS1 downloads on the store is an official emulator for the PS1 called FPSE which has amazing support, and allows people to use...ahem...backed up copies of games they "already own" which negates the need to purchase anything at all when you just downloa.....I mean officially backup all those PS1 games you still own.
Even if Sony were to open up the entire back catalogue for download they won't sell when there is that cheaper alternative. And the Xperia doesn't even need "jailbreaking" (called rooting on Android devices apparently) in order for it to function. None of the emulators do.
As an Xperia owner I have to say I'm impressed with the versatility of the device. It plays every game with ease and the Android games are near PSP in quality,. Especially titles like Modern Combat, Nova and Nova 2 HD. Proper PSN support would make me feel a lot better about my purchase but I'm hoping PlayStation Suite will bring something different to the table. Seeing as that will be integrated into NGP then my purchase may have some longevity.
All I can say is that based on my time with the XP I've no desire to upgrade any time soon. Something I can't say when I previously owned an iPhone and a...shudder...Blackberry.

I've had this phone since Monday (unlocked/unbranded ATT 3G compatible), and coming from an iPhone 3GS this phone is so much better in so many ways. I've played with the iPhone 4 as well and I'm just not into touch games anymore. I want serious controls and this thing does deliver. They are smaller for sure and take some time to adjust to but once you get into it you soon forget about that. Playing emulators is awesome, and the new games are pretty sweet as well. The official PS1 games are just a crutch until game devs get going on more Play oriented games. But since the hardware controls are baked into gingerbread, its easy to code in for existing games.
I'm not concerned with this announcement. You guys just have no idea... wait until you get to play with one in person, I guarantee you'll be impressed.
