Oh awesome. They started the life with people dreading hardware failure, and now they have their customers begging for console failure.

I hope I get chosen for a brand new xbox 360! I need an upgrade from my original 20GB model without HDMI.

Microsoft is replacing stuff that they break, Sony is making a peace offering to customers who were screwed by hackers. Try to note the difference and stop being an entitled brat.

@BtheCarp Sony screwed their customers by having insufficient security but most ridiculous is storing your original password. SOP for 30 years is to one way encrypt your password and store only the encrypted version - that way even they don't know your password, can only reset it. Any site that can send you your password instead of a reset only is obviously using improper security measures, don't use a common password with them. And yes I'm a ps3 owner, although it only gets used for netflix these days.

While I agree there are a lot of those people (who play offline & are not daily gaming news junkies); those same people, for the most part, do know how to use the internet. I'm sure when & if this strikes them the news/reasons will be easy enough to find. A quick search after the update is released will likely result in page after page of various forum posts ranting about broken 360s being answered with links to articles like this.

Hackers wouldn't have gotten in if the documented security flaws didn't exist. No firewall, several server versions behind, non-hashed passwords.

Or they wouldn't need security if people weren't trying to hack in and steal it. Your argument's an endless loop..

So your blaming a victim for being victimized? Thats like saying your at fault if your car got broken into even though you locked it because the thief knew he could exploit your security by breaking the window. Its well documented that car windows break, that doesn't mean that a known exploitation is an invitation.

Sony could/should have done a better job protecting their data, but my earlier comment is on the compensation to people affected. In this case microsoft is the one hurting their own customers, in Sony's case, they were a victim of a crime. All they lost was personal information that could have been google hacked. The credit card info was confirmed to be encrypted and no documented cases of improper use have been presented yet. Its not like they're the first company to have lost customer data, I have received e-mail/snail mail from a major credit card company saying their information was stolen too. Sony, in my opinion, has offered a reasonable compensation for everyone affected.

The fact is, as long as unscrupulous people want to get to something, they will keep trying until they succeed or get caught. Your justification for Sony's fault is flawed.

The accusations of Sony's servers lacked proper security is absolutely false and based on second hand information. There are no documented accounts by anyone that Sony was grossly negligent in their protection of PSN servers. What you are saying is because a person had an alarm system that wasn't Brinks on their home they deserved to be robbed, which is idiotic.

It has to be a certain model not just any 60gb pro, also the serial numbers may already have been registered to the previous owner.

I think this is going to only apply to very specific hardware... I can't imagine Microsoft deeming the increased copy protection worth replacing more than a few thousand consoles.

@oxfordfishsalon Yes, it is for very specific hardware. The AP2.5 checks will be retroactively applied to all games. Xbox 360s with early Hitachi DVD drives, as well as all Samsung drives are incompatible with AP2.5 checks. You can check relatively easily what brand drive you have by following these instructions: http://www.xblog-360.com/forum/showthread.php?t=564 (This is of course unofficial.)

Aren't a lot of 3+ 360s using the Hitachi and Samsung drives? I replaced my original Xbox, and the replacement uses one of those (based on where the tray is gray or black). That seems like a lot of replacements if so.

Still, this isn't the sort of thing I'd expect if a 360 replacement were in the near future (within the next 2 years).

It's probably just some or all of the Hitachi drives found in the phat 360s. Hackers have dissected the beta update, and have found the DVD firmware flashes for all of the drives except the phat Hitachis.

Google "xbox 360 drive trays" click on the first result, and look on the page to see if your DVD drive tray matches the Hitachi's. If there is a hole in the drive tray, your chances of getting a new Slim replacement are better than most.

Just an educated guess ;)

@Da Mr did you even read the article? it clearly states some consumer consoles won't be able to read some retail game discs with the new update. if this happens to you, THEN and only then will they replace your current XBox360 with a Slim. So if you go buy an XBox right now and you get the update and all your current games and new games work with no issues, then you just wasted some money......

Well, guess it's time to fix my old RROD'd 360 and mod it to death then (I suppose they wouldn't accept a model that has already been modded before to bypass a RROD).

BTW, just updated my newer model (Elite MW2 LE) and it works just fine.

The console got sold at retail at some point, so this really doesn't affect Microsoft's bottom line. If you're lucky enough to buy one off e-bay that has this issue, then you should have played the lottery instead. The payoff would have been higher.

Depending upon if they require you to send them your old 360, and if you do if it would have to be handed over to the delivery man, you could always just use a transfer kit to transfer all your content to the new 360 and then just do the license transfer.

That's fan-frikkin-tastic considering that I have a US system in a European territory right now + the fact that it region codes.

Thanx...a bunch...really MS...I guess I have to pray the next time I update that system now.

...actually I think I'll just leave it in the box...safer that way till they iron this out. (Read: if)

1. They will send you back whatever region console you send them (or atleast that's what happened in the US when I sent out a Japanese one)
2. This will never get ironed out. If you have one of the consoles this update will effect, you're console will always end up not being able to read discs if you ever update.

Downvote all you guys want, but lets put this into perspective.

I'm in a European territory...more than likely I will get a *European* Xbox from support (even if I tell them the story....I've done this before..it wasn't pretty)...I have USA games...Xbox region codes...thereby invalidating all the games I currently own.

But whatever... really. Its not any of you care. My statement still stands however.

Don't worry, they'll try to make it up to you somehow. I called MS customer service multiple times:
for example
- accidently kicked my power supply so hard it broke > they sent me a new one for free
- two different language versions of Halo 1 wouldn't play in their language > told me how to clear cache (back then when it wasn't so obvious
In fact, say what you want about MS, but the Xbox service in my experience has been amazing so far. Plus their hotline is free (at least where I live).

On a different thing (don't want to post new comment). Does anyone know if they collect the old box? That way you'd have no chance to transfer your saves and DLC, right?

@sparkster No, because they make you take the hard drive (and faceplate for some reason) off. I sent mine in for RROD and just held on to the hard drive for the time being.
