Yeah todays games are never going to similar services in the future. Too many toolkits, shared IP, and labor agreements.

@FriedConsole I disagree-- look at the music industry, or digital books. Yeah, it took a while and there was an interregnum where there was the technology but no content, but the lawyers wised up and now contracts include digital distribution. I imagine that licensing middleware or support libraries over the past couple years has been done with contracts that have options included in them to prevent the "digital dark age" problem that, sadly, ol' Rock has managed to get himself caught in.

It is entirely possible that this is why Virtual Console releases have dried up so badly in the past year and a half, and that that's why (as Freakservo mentions below) Earthbound is caught up in a hell of red tape.

I would argue that the experiences devs and pubs are having trying to release some of their back catalog are likely making them smarter about the contracts they are creating now. I'll be in many of those licensing contracts, there are now language and clauses included to help facilitate keeping games on active market places in the future.

What I wanna know is why Grandfather Clauses don't exist for these sorts of things. They signed the contracts and did all that work, and now they can't release the game because of a few voices? I don't get it. Then again, this is America, the Land of Litigation, and the Home of the Offended.

The bigger concern is that you'd figure the owners would be more than happy to give the permission. That's what vexed me over the legal fight regarding, say, Tatsunoko vs Capcom, because the USA owners of Tatsunoko properties couldn't be seeing much money at all

Similarly for whoever made random junk for Megaman Legends back then, unless it was the testing ground for some revolutionary middleware or codecs, likely it's unused junk that the owners would be more than happy to get even a tiny royalty on anymore

Yeah, I mean, if it's voice acting troubles, that shouldn't be too bad to replace!

But I imagine the internet would run ablaze... hell, I was about to post an angry comment on the news about Harley...

OK, but how about the physics engine? That wasn't great either, but it'd be pretty damn hard to play the game without that.

(And I *liked* the voice acting.)

@gatotsu911 The Legend's series (sans Megaman in Legends 2) had top class voice acting. Just because the actors aren't movie stars or haven't voiced hundreds of different games doesn't make them crap.

I'd just like the hold-out parties to be outed whether officially or by way of a leak.

We still may not get our games but at least we'd be able to let those people/companies know that they can eat a big fat one.

It's not that easy. the re-release may not make enough back to justify it, the license may be too expensive, or it may just be impossible to track the companies/holders down, as they could have gone out of business.

I'm finding this pretty unacceptable. Capcom should've figured this crap out long before they decided they were going to do work on a 3rd game in the series. If they work around the legal BS and get these re-released, they could effectively bring in a whole new generation of MML fans that are excited for the new game. There are plenty of people who are going to be (and have been previously) interested who have never played a MML game in their life, and will now possibly never have the chance. Capcom always complains about MML not having stellar sales in the US, and not re-releasing the old games to hype up the great looking new one is just going to kill it off once and for all.

Yeeeeah, suuuure, make the long awaited sequel for a 3d-capable make-up kit and leave any loyal fan high and dry. I never had the chance to play even one of the original ones because I never found them (neither did I know that they existed for some time) here in Greece! Why not make an HD remake for a bundle? Oh, yeah, sorry I forgot, it's not like releasing a Super Tournament Arcade edition of an existing game.

I don't know what it is about the Legends series in particular, but Capcom is freaking TERRIFIED of it. It took about twelve years for them to even consider a trilogy ender (which, I must mention, hasn't even been officially green-lit for production), and although they've re-released the first two titles on the PSP (exclusively in Japan), they claim "oh, we can't figure it out, so eff it." Literally the only things it can possibly be at this point are re-licensing the classical music for the western release or (most likely) whatever licensing deals they had worked out wiith the voice actors in the past not being valid anymore.

I don't understand why they can't just skip over that step and just give us the Japanese PSP ports with Japanese voice acting and English subtitles. At this point, I think English-speaking MegaMan Legends fans who don't still have the games or can't get ahold of them will probably take what they can get, as sad as that sounds. But Capcom just doesn't want to do it.

Look, Capcom, you guys are professionals in the art of squeezing extra money out of your consumers. Do you want our money or not? These games aren't new; the only work to be done to make additional money off of them is to figure out ways around your licensing issues. It is literally money waiting to be made.

Until then, Amazon and eBay are but a click away.

Prototype version isn't blackmail either, it's part of the whole idea of the games development. They are making it for feedback purposes, hence why the Dev Room exists on Capcom-Unity. It's a BETA. Is the Gears of War 3 Beta blackmail? No, it's a resource for the developers to get feedback from and help improve the game.

Mega Man Legends 3's whole development process is being done with the fans in mind, and what better way to do it than to have the fans help out themselves?
