IGN's Direct2Drive is allegedly being sold to GameFly, MCV reports. An official announcement is expected next week. Direct2Drive does offer a limited selection of game rentals, which fits in directly with GameFly's business model. Sources, while unable to confirm the sale, do tell us that IGN has been looking to unload D2D for some time.
This would be the second major announcement out of News Corp's IGN in under a month. The company announced in early May it was merging with UGO, and reports indicated that the company would spin off from News Corp.
IGN and GameFly told Joystiq in perfect harmony that neither company will "comment on rumors or speculation."

Good. Hopefully Gamefly will make D2D a significant threat to Steam. I hate Steam but all the alternatives suck.

@Mmmmz Because I have no faith in humanity. Anything that is as perfect and well loved as Steam and Valve must be hiding something. Always bribing us with cheap games, why? What are they trying to distract us from? And now they have a new sale every day?! Why? Also I've been using Steam for almost all my PC gaming for the past 5 years and it's getting boring.
I know those aren't good reasons but I don't care. They're my reasons and if you don't like them well thats just fine. Everyone's entitled to there own opinion.

The reason steam offers service they way they do is not cause they aren't hiding anything. Of course this is your opinion and I am entitled to mine. But the reason I think you feel this way is because you have been a victim to, many large corporations that make money on mass production rather than on quality products.

That is why Valve offers a better product because they know if they didn't their competition, which is backed by GWFL(microsoft), IGN(new Corp), would crush them. Valve is acting like a company should act when they are competing for consumer loyalty.
But to each is own,

@(Unverified) Yeah I know. All companies should be as awesome as Valve. But they're not. Valve is the odd one out here and for some reason I find it very disconcerting. Not that it's stopped me from using their products or buying their games. I just think some alternatives would be nice.

There's no response for that kind of crazy (paranoia). I am surprised that you haven't killed your closet. I mean, it IS hiding stuff from you. It just puts back "your" stuff before you open it. They defy all physics. Plus, why does it hide the stuff you want to hide, for free? It makes no sense!
I won't even tell you what goes on in your fridge when the door is closed...

i love steam but some nice healthy competition would be great. gog, d2d, and gfw are failing so far

Well, I wouldn't quite call GOG direct competition, since they *almost* exclusively cater to retro PC gamer tastes.
I haven't bought much from them, largely by virtue of how many of those old games I've owned on disc/disk for years, but I love and support what they do.

@darkinchworm good point, it was probably unfair to lump gog in there too, i just wish it wasn't so scary as to if they are going to be around forever. i'd buy a lot more from these services if i truly believed it would always exist (ie steam...and maybe now d2d)

I had GameFly since January, but cancelled it this week since they refused to ship out L.A. Noire. I went to the local video store (yes, video store), and rented it for 5 nights for $3.43. More than enough time to finish it over this weekend.

We all should have seen this coming given that their logos both use the same colors.

I love Direct 2 Drive...it is so cheap.
10% off for Pre-Ordering the game...
An Extra 20% Off for being in the Rewards Program....
= CHEAP GAMES!!
They also have a lot of sales...
Don't screw it Gamefly, if True. (Maybe they will start a PC rental program...)

That actually sounds like a decent deal. After Impulse was gobbled up by Gamestop, there were no real alternatives to Steam apart from D2D and GFWL (and I guess BigDownload but does anyone even use that?). If this helps D2D grow, them I'm all for it.

More competition is a good thing as it helps drive down prices. Steam started up daily deals to counter Direct 2 Drive's and also has recently been trying to match their 10% off pre-order discounts as well. The people at Microsoft should pay attention to all of this and turn Games for Windows Sucks Live into a real competitor.

Sounds like a good idea to me. Gamefly could do a lot of good with D2D
