Aw. You can't burn down a whole continent now!

Not that...I've ever done that on purpose...of course...

Too bad the game is still incredibly unstable for SMP players.

@(Unverified) Try reinstalling java (assuming you get a blackscreen crash). More specifically, install 64-bit java jre if you are on a 64-bit machine. Doing so resolved several the problem for several people I know, myself included. SMP has been very stable for me for the last few months. Remote clients can get unstable when traveling large distances via. minecart due to bandwidth issues on the server side, but with LAN clients and a few remote clients we haven't had any issues lately.

Still in beta is no excuse for no in house testing before going live, take bukkit for example it's always in development but yet they always select builds as their stable and recommended build after some in house testing.

All I am asking that they launch both SMP and single player on a preexisting map and generated new ones and as long as there are no glaring issues with either then you can release it to the players to find the minor bugs which are harder to find.

I run a server myself and am refusing to update my server to 1.6 until it's stable, it's not an issue with java either.

@(Unverified) I play on a vanilla MP server and never had problems with the server itself. Any problems were always with the client and could be fixed by reconnecting.

The problem I was having was with Chunck Generation, the initial batch worked but anything outside that set the server Generate it.

I don't even understand how people can uprank a thoughtless comment like 'Still in Beta'. Yes we all know it's in Beta, but just running your software at least once to see if it's stable is a normal practice anywhere else before pushing out to Testers.

i have to agree, the SMP is VERY unstable and updating breaks alot of things. The map crashes my game, and my server is still on 1.5 and will prob still be for at least 2-3 weeks.

Sadly those 4 bug fix releases aren't any more stable. Updated our server with the latest bukkit build that works on 1.6.4. Totally unplayable. Reports of the official server software are equally as bad. Notch's twitter says he's working on fixes

do the maps update themselves though? like if it shows and island and i were to destroy it would it disappear? also i think that there should be a map that shows underground as well... just a thought.

I think you have to be viewing the changed area with the map equipped.

It's kind of weird, but the top of maps aren't North. Going "up" on the map means you're going East.

That being said, maps can fill in a huge chunk of your world, so it's pretty awesome.

This version is completely unplayable. Wait until it gets patched again. Tools break instantly. Water randomly becomes ice. Randomly unable to see anything on multiplayer.

Before everyone says "Oops beta!", keep in mind that Notch said these next versions would be about improving the stability and playability, but it's actually gotten worse. It's stupid to say "no complaining about the quality" when a couple million people have already bought it, especially considering Notch said the final release will pretty much just be changing the version number.

Bleeehhhhhhhhhh

I agree with you, although I was downranked earlier, we're not asking for anything beyond what a normal programmer would do in a testing cycle. You dont push out a completely unstable/untested binary to your testers. Wont do you much good on finding the issues you actually want the testers there to find.

Multiplayer is unplayable now: Chunks not generating, blocks reappearing after you destroy them, dark caves not lighting up when you place torches...... not to mention the other bugs. Why'd Notch have to "fix" animals only spawning in the light at night?

I dislike hearing this "you cant complain about bugs because its still in beta" stuff. TBH the first few bug updates should have been EXTREMELY noticeable to any good coder. Not to say notch isnt a good coder, he just doesnt test. He should really start ignoring the public thats saying "GIMME MAPS NAO" and start testing everything thoroughly before putting out updates. Im quite happy that me/my server stayed on 1.5 for now, as this is just sort of bad. I do know he will have them fixed soon however, i just really hope he learns to test things more in the future. Even possibly having a large, dedicated to minecraft testing team would be better.

I'm actually rather disappointed about the speed "hack" fix, lol. A bug which allowed you to speed up the game by increasing your local time was fixed in 1.6, which I actually liked to employ a lot simply because most of my projects require the gathering and placing of thousands of blocks (this isn't an exaggeration).

As for the whole "beta" argument, I believe that since we paid for the game that we should get decent quality for our money. If it were a free beta then a lack of sufficient in-house testing might be acceptable, but since we actually have to pay for the right to play then at least some testing should be done, beta or not.

Hahzah!!

Oh how I love minecraft. I can forgive some bugs seeing it's still in beta.

Some of the awesome of minecraft is its accelerated process of adding stuff. It takes time and money to thoroughly test a game.

Sure, we're all entitled to complain...this is the internets afterall.

Saying notch didn't test is a bit ridiculous...of course he tests it out before putting out a new version. Simply don't update once you are in a stable place if you don't like it yar?

The way I see it is - We paid for the 1.0 version of the game.
We get betas for free as XTRA. (we may wait for final stable version if wish)
WE help beta test by finding bugs. Notch releases - Gets spammed by 100's of people finding bugs - fixes = done. (instead of finding them all himself which takes much longer than you'd think)

@(Unverified) Yes, I understand that being in a beta test involves finding the bugs, which is a big service to the team. But as a test progresses from alpha to beta, it's supposed to be less about stability and more about the balance, features, etc. Having done a couple closed betas before, this is unprecedented and nuts.

Notch is doing it all backwards. The more glitches there are, the more he accidentally adds. It's like some kind of Benjamin Button dilemma.
